Its a cool character for sure that krampus, but if i'd go with him i'd need to change the legs and add a tail/horns. that wouldnt do the composition much good...

Yup --it was just a thought-- 'cause you weren't sure whether it looked enough like the grinch. I think the demonic shadow-grinch looks pretty solid. Changing the outreached hand to make him look more like he's clawing at the chile is a nice touch. It creates more visual tension and adds clarity to the furry fingertips.

Dr Seuss stylised children might help, or giving him a torn-up Santa costume and a vicious dog with a single antler strapped to its head.
Thanks, the child worked will in the composition, was gonne place presents there in the first place.

Yup. It's here.

I can't wait to see the second groups' work.

Cheers!

:Stupid nonsense

Sigh... Except that I posted the wrong expanded pic -- I purposely changed the lower-right-light from green to blue, to make the right edge a bit more different from the left edge. I meant to post this.

Also do you reckon you could get a branch leaving the right side of the pic? Might be interesting for the person who'll work with that side!

I think I'm pretty much done, but I'm open to further suggestions. This version has extended edges for reference.

The proper (cropped) version is here.

Have you tried ditching the snow?

Yeah, I agree about the snow (top pic) and I'm thinking that maybe shrinking the light bulbs might also quiet things down (bottom pic). Alternatively, I'm thinking of redoing the lights with larger bulbs, but half as many lights. Whatever I do, I gotta make those trees a bit less fugly.

@Little-Eise and @Lockesmyth, do you have any status on your submissions? Even if you decide to drop out, an early response can help me plan how to handle Group B.

Hey boss. Sorry for not checking in sooner. I didn't have much time to work on this last week, but it'll be done by the Friday deadline.

This is a very crude WIP, but it should give a broad idea the final boarders. There may be some more bits of color along the edge once all of the Xmas-lights are in place.

Hmmm. . . Ooops. . . I didn't realize that the NG BBS re-interprets quotation marks as âEUoe and âEU. Sorry about that.

Flowers10
I really like this piece; it is the only submission that incorporated a âEUoetransformative power of NatureâEU theme. It adds a dynamic element to the piece. I think that the photo compositing works pretty well, but it could use some refinement. The lens flare might be a little too much.

The swaddled body of the baby is a little disturbing. It has large baby head and then a withered cocoon of a body. The baby just needs to be fleshed out a bit more.

CypressDahlia
I know it's just a WIP, but it is very promising. The âEUoebeasts of NatureâEU pouring out of her robes is a cool concept. Nature is generally very color driven. I know that I would have been much happier with my own piece if I had given myself enough time to color it. If CypressDahlia's had been colorized, it would have been a strong contender.

ZaneZansorrow
CypressDahlia, and Flowers10 went with characters in motion, which makes their submissions more dynamic; everyone else went static figures. Zane's is an interesting compromise; it has an unmoving character with flowing, swirling movement around her. It reflects the duality of nature as a collection of ancient, static entities and young, dynamic forces. Also, the high contrast composition is excellently executed.

I don't quite understand the bulbous thing floating-over/growing-out-of her head. It that a cultural/mythological reference that I'm just missing?

Aigis
I agree with everything CypressDahlia said: solid (bottom-heavy like a mountain), older, motherly figure. If nothing else, Ageis' submission stands out as the only one that went the Earth/stone/soil direction and not the leaf/plant/tree direction. I like the minimalist take; it has a kind of "Saturday Morning Cartoon" straightforwardness. I think that it works well as a character design, with after all, is the point of the CHOW. My only criticism is that it seems a little generic as far as being a design of a âEUoewoman made of stone.âEU It could use a few more elements to connect it to the âEUoeGaia/Mother EarthâEU concept.

ImpendingRiot
I think that this one is a little under-cooked. It has cool nymph/Earth-spirit quality, but I feel that same way about it as I do about Aigis' piece, it just seems a little too generic. I prefer the ancient, earthy Mother Nature interpretation over the young, nubile, âEUoeSpirit of SpringâEU interpretation (but that is completely a personal opinion).

Pixel Pocket
It has an âEUoeEarth MotherâEU vibe in a kind of hippie/bohemian sense, but it doesn't quite resonate with the âEUoeGaia/Mother NatureâEU as well as it could. With that said, I am a total sucker for elaborate pixel art and Pixel Pocket's Pixel-Kung-Fu is amazing. Beautifully rendered.

Kamikaye
The textures and concept are very solid; I like the abstract tree-face-creature-thing. My only issue is that whole piece is a little muddy (pardon the pun). The low-contrast rendering gives the piece a great misty, soft glow quality, but it makes some of the composition hard to âEUoeread.âEU For example, what it that protuberance in front of the character's face? Gaia's fist? Leg? Random stump? It looks like there are red sparks coruscating from the top. What's that about? I just feel like stump and a few other elements could be a little sharper.

A lot of great submissions; it was difficult to make a decision, but I vote for Kamikaye
(ZaneZansorrow and Flowers10 tied for my 2nd).

A lot of good submissions above. Cheers, folks.

Response to: Recommendations for Front Page Posted December 8th, 2011 in Art

Laufman has two FPs, but I think this was better than either.

Izzy-A has two, but I think this is deseving of more attention.

Morgadeshou has a Daily 3rd a Daily 5th
and a Daily Feature, but I didn't see any FPs. I thought this one had already been on the Front Page.

Koel-Art has a Daily 4th and a Daily 5th, (again, I didn't see any FPs) I suggest this.

I don't think JessePants has had anything on the front page; I think this should be.

I feel very conflicted about ZaneZansorrow's city carrier. On the one hand, a city nestled inside the protective membrane of a huge arachnid/crustacean thing, is awesome. On the other hand, after all of the talk about what is too humanoid, I started wondering if the city carrier isn't creature-ish enough. Beside the somewhat biological looking membrane and one stalk that looks like a leg, there isn't much that makes it look alive; it could just be a man-made structure in the middle of a volcano. ZaneZansorrow's and J-qb's were definitely the two strongest concepts, but since J-qb's was more on topic, I vote for J-qb.

Well. . . I hope mine isn't too crabanoid.

Not sure if this is finished. The background is basically just a place holder and I wanted more oozing lava, but I don't think that I'll have time to work on it again before the Dec 5th deadline. Cheers, folks.

I apologize if this sounds like a stupid question, but I'm going ask anyway. . .

How literal are rules like:

- No real-life animals (play-on-names are fine).

For example, (in keeping with the volcano dweller theme) would a crab-like creature that secretes lava from bulbous stone fissures in its shell constitute something too similar to a real-life animal? How dissimilar from a crab would it have to be? Extra legs? No claws? Fur?
