I would love to run that number~

Response to: 0.999... ≠ 1 || 0.999... = 1 Posted October 27th, 2013 in General

Depends on the context~

If you need to be exact, 0.99999 is less than 1. Because 1.0 > 0.anything.

There are a bunch of cases where you can round .999 up to 1.0 and it won't make much of a difference, but .999 is still less than 1.

Response to: Kleptomania? Posted October 26th, 2013 in General

Being mentally erroneous does not mean responsibilities fall out of your hands. It means that, right now, you fit a mental-profile, and anyone with a critical process of thinking can tell whether someone is full of themselves, or they are truly, objective, absolutely, indubatably lost in tranlation because of something that occurs beyond their power.

Being a kleptomaniac, is like being a hyperchondriac. People just like thinking something is "wrong" with themselves, to ignore responsibility and get away with being the lowest common denominator.

In a lotta ways that's true. I'm perfectly fine with admitting I'm a little thief that gets a rush from stealing things. But every day, even when I'm trying to not do it, something inside of me is driving me in the directions of stealing something, anything.

I'm not ignoring responsibility. That would be like a drunk person saying they shouldn't be held responsible for killing someone, because they were drunk.

Oh, it doesn't really bother me that you like stealing little things.
It bothers me a little that you'd describe it like some sort of mental problem instead of just saying "hey I like to steal stuff".

I do like stealing things. But what you're saying is like telling a someone with a mental disorder to stop listening to the voices in their head. Or telling someone with DID to tell their other personalities to kick it.

I mean, being an amateur sci-fi writer I have a vested interest in my own theories, but I think planets will be colonised by whoever funded the colonisation so you might have US colonies, Chinese colonies, colonies owned by an EU syndicate etc. etc. Seeing as how there is no precedent for extra terrestrial colonisation, I can imagine that shit just being sculpted by the free market.

I dunno. If there is a whole galaxy of species who are aware of each other and coexist, I think we'll have to group up as "humans" instead of "Russians, Americans, Brits" etc. That's not to say give up the idea of countries and nationalities, I just think that at some point we'd have to create a body that represents Earth, and give other species something to point their finger at if we mess up.

Imagine if an early U.S. Colony does something retarded on another planet. The other species won't blame the U.S., they'll blame humans.

I just can't see the idea of country-run colonies working in space.

So, like, United Nations, except everybody? Interesting idea~ If we ever start colonizing other planets, though, that might become a problem. Will they be colonies of "Earth", or will they be colonies of the country that sent them?

Humanity-Wide Laws? Posted October 26th, 2013 in Politics

Do you think there will ever be a power that has final jurisdiction over all human affairs?

This is all hypothetical.

In many, many years, if intelligent life off of Earth is discovered, and assuming they don't kill us immediately, and find a way to communicate with us, who will represent us?

In Mass Effect, there's the Alliance. In Star Trek, there's Starfleet Command.

What do you think will happen when there is a need for a planet-wide government? When the governments of entire countries will need to fall under something bigger?

Dealt with kleptomania? Because it's such a fucking burden to just not steal something? Because you have an imaginary mental problem?

Hey, I've tried to stop stealing stuff. Even after I got caught. Went about 6 months forcing myself not to do it until I suddenly found myself taking a worthless ring from a store.

I have never stolen things myself, or get the feeling to steal anything, the feelings I do get are ones of fearing others are thinking I am stealing or what would happen if I was to steal something and the resulting negative outcomes.

I never really get that unless I know the people running the store suspect me.

I stole something today, I stole some stuff on monday, pretty sure I stole some stuff last week. In fact I know I did. Might be bad that I can't even remember all the items I pinch, so natural is the act now for me.

I do it pretty often, too~ Ya, most of it is pretty meh. So much so I usually give it away or let it sit around my room. If I'm really "why in the world did I take this?" I might leave it back in the place I got it from.

Most recently, I stole a book. It's lovely so far.

Well not really, I liked stealing random items as a kid but then I (got caught and) stopped.

How about this: buy/salvage sooo much stuff you barely have room to get around the house. Then you'll realize stuff isn't necessarily good but rather a burden, and thus have no need to take any more.

Sounds more like being a hoarder~

I went on a horrible spree, like, four years ago. I got caught the other year pretty badly. I may or may not still do it every now and then~ It sort of just happens. The want to do it, that is.
