Seeing some nice buns on those fly hons. Nice work, dude.

Digging the designs, though I do prefer the orange-palette version of the first picture you posted over on your Blogspot. How much would you say you use 3d models in your work?

- one user issues a challenge to another user (character, creature, scene, comic),
- the other user accepts, provides a theme (space) and a deadline (a week from now)
- they draw,
- final pics are uploaded to the art portal, and voting takes place in a dedicated thread.
This idea isn't completely ironed out, so I'm wanted to hear some thoughts.

In theory I'm all for it.

But inbetween less outgoing users not participating period, not-regulars not knowing other users to call out, and general unwillingness to antagonize or declare one user better than the other, I'd say that user participation would be your biggest hurdle.

I ran out of videogames to play, so here's a comic book protagonist.

Eh, yeah that's pretty much what it'll look like. I named it Daisy, I hope you all appreciate the humour of that.

Yes.

But
- this shouldn't be a defense for errors in your pic or technique. For example, that head is far too long when you compare it's length to her torso.
- I find slapping penises on women an overdone idea, and not interesting. (I don't think I've ever seen a truly homathroditic pic, actually, it's just genital switches)
- some people's "tastes" extends to where it develops potentially harmful views on other people, which is wrong.

... And you should have labelled this thread nsfw.

I think trashydolls here was talking about literal taste. Like, wine-tasting, but with homemade prostate mayonnaise.

Response to: Voting System Overhaul Proposal Posted 2 weeks ago in NG News

I'll just straight say that it being universal is an objective improvement. Seriously objective. As well as the option to submit a scoreless review. And the one vote per media piece. All on board. Great job, guys.

What I am confused on is the "Review data will become the new Score data" section. Do you need to submit a review for your vote to count (and if so, what's the point of voting)? I mean, even typing it out seems a stupid question, but you never know.

If this has already been answered in the thread, just don't answer and I'll eventually muster up the motivation to read the whole thread.

Not using CamStudio for a start, it's a piece of shit. Try Open Broadcaster Software instead. It's freeware, accessible and toaster-compatible, the goto for most high quality streams and recording.

Trouble is that even on a hand-drawing, I have to do an armature of sorts, which is what the blue strokes are for. Once the armature is done, I'm able to draw smoothly by hand, but not on a tablet -- I'm not used to it.

What do you recommend?

The construction was what I was referring to. Line Efficiency is a concept I find is fetishized to an extreme degree among some circles, but it's nevertheless a concept worth paying attention to. Though it's uses I find don't lie in using less to achieve more, but more in achieving what you set out to initially do and being done with it.

A series of practices. Attached: A scanned few pages on line efficiency.

Simply practice, a page or two, of drawing simple shapes, form, and then slowly incorporate it into your work. It'd mostly look like this. Helps more than it looks like it would.

Chrome is a CPU hog. If you're running it on a low-spec computer (a toaster) then concessions have to be made. Try running your recording software with any other browser, though you may miss out on some of Chome's fabulous features such as being a gigantic botnet.

At 1/14/15 02:52 PM, Troisnyx wrote: This is where it's at right now. I give up.

Well, lessons can be learned. The sheer amount of visual noise in your sketch indicates that you may be spending too much time whiling away on a form with 20 lines when you should be spending (in this hypothetical example) 3 at most. This may just be projecting, but I've personally found that trait underlies a personal lack of confidence in your art - being hesitant to proceed onto the next aspect of the illustration, and it consequentially suffering.

My advice would be to have more confidence in your art. More faith. Use bolder strokes, and less of them to put to paper your ideas. Being discouraged is perfectly natural. But never give up, never surrender. Salvage the unsalvageable with confidence and grit.

And good luck!

If you're just going about looking for weirdly vapid recommendations I've got nothing, but as for the overall process I'd suggest having a gander at The Gurney Journey's blog articles on "The String Mop" and "The Ribbon Secret".

I've found that working in that direction overall leads to much more naturalistic looking hair, though I do tend towards defining individual hairs way too much, myself. Hope it helps, or whatever.

Completely inane, but here's some things I drew for Miiverse. It's a horrible little drawing tool, actually. No layers, monochrome only, no zooming, very insensitive touchpad. But its quick and easy, so I use it anyway.

Wonderful 101 is easily my GOTY. I don't care that it came out last year, shut up. Bayonetta 2 is okay too, I guess. Ending is lame.

Interesting! I'm curious about your work process - what does a quick sketch look like and how do you go from there?
Also how do you select colours to consistently make your rainbowgasmic eyecandy?

I'm not a fan of thumbnailing, or brainstorming or whatever. I find it's just a waste of time, I only ever go with the first idea anyway. So my sketch is just me throwing down the visual image I've already gotten in mind, rendering that to a point where I'm able to paint with easy, quickly throwing colours under it and then painting over it until I'm "satisfied" with the image.

Recently I've taken care not to do any rendering whatsoever under the sketch layer, since the sketch's values often mess with my own intended ones.

Colours are a similarly haphazard affair. Normally I choose two main colours - one warm and one cold. Doesn't have to be particularly warm or cold, don't have to be opposites, shadows can be warm and lights can be cold. Whatever it is that serves my whims at that particular time. Picture is based around that. There can be three or four colours, or sixteen if I'm in the mood for it.

I wouldn't call it random (well I would but smarmy assholes have called me out for it in the past), but it's certainly not overthought. Colours don't really matter, as long as your values are right you can get away with anything.

At 12/25/14 10:59 AM, 24901miles wrote: Also do you ever bind keyboard hotkeys to different brushes and colors?

If so, what's your layout?

I've got a couple of tools binded so I can quickly hit them all with the one hand, F for Brush, Q for Crop, W for Lasso, C and V for Decrease/Increase Brush size. Those are really the only hotkeys I used. Photoshop CS3 has that nifty F5 bind for when I feel like messing with brushes, which isn't often. Most of the time, it's just a brush.

But I did feel that my images were getting sharper when I decreased their size than I intended them to be, so I messed with it that once.

And a happy new year!

Response to: So.. I draw aswell. Posted 1 month ago in Art

Very soft and non-threatening style you've got going. Hope you continue to post work.

Offering any advice, I'd say to work on your values/contrast and the way you convey form. The few examples of "shading" I've seen in the thread are as soft as your style, and while that's cohesive it does a weak job of presenting the illustrations as 3-dimensional objects.

But considering you still seem to largely think on a flat plane it might be asking a bit much to expect you to suddenly become proficient at thinking in form. I'm sure as long as you continue to practice and experiment you'll continue to improve in the area you desire. Good luck!

oh but also i'd make that line that leads up to the hips and delineates the thighs from the abdomen (see arrows) a lot softer, since that's usually not quite that defined. though sometimes it is! just very rarely. bodies are strange. but it's a recession in depth created by a fat deposit rather than bone, so i wouldn't make it too sharp. especially when the rest of your figure is so slender.

also unless it's shaved that way hair usually covers more of the mons? and it tends to thin a bit as it gets to the edges. you probably knew that though.

I've been ruined - ruined by my days of drawing v-shaped lower abdomens strong enough to snap a balsa-wood plank just by hip-thrusting at it with the speed of a lust-powered jet engine. Probably.

I'll keep on eye on those delineating thigh-lines. I suppose it didn't cross my mind at the time that I could've just used a softer brush to do the work for me. Thanks for the radvice, Dark. And yeah, the completely unnatural kept fur patch was on purpose.

Perhaps it's an unpopular look. I'm unaware of the role pubic hair plays in fashion statements.

Hmm. Whether or not you're being mean in the eyes of another person is entirely subject to their own interpretation. You can't control how another person reacts to your criticism - some of the more sensitive types react to all types of criticism as if you're "trolling" them. Empathy is all well and good but there's been many famous blowouts over entirely well-intentioned criticism - at least in illustration.

There's not exactly a metric for "meanness".

I wouldn't say that leaving a series of very personal calls over feelings in the hands of such vague criteria, while simultaneously encouraging hyperactive amounts of sugarcoating and other disgusting habits that worm their way into criticism, is a good idea. But then maybe the world of VA calls for that.
