Thank you, it really hit home for me, I'm going to work on a drawing that relies on texture and lighting a bit more or at least there'd be attention to these aspects to create a greater sense of depth.

What's with the we are trees thing?

Also, good points cept Aigis, because I do believe the bear is doing a 3/4 stance like a performer on stage would do so the audience can see them better while they talk with another actor.

I guess if I focus on finishing the drawing and pay more attention to texture and detail I'll get over some of the suck but the guy's pm made me laugh because I guess he thought I thought of myself as awesome

ugh....ok. First of all, the style, obviously you don't know how to use it, you can't use that kind of style with a picture/image in movement, why? well because the train for example doesn't look like is 100% moving... because of the style. Then again, I said "not 100%". It does look like an intent of make a train in movement;now, while the train tries to be in movement the kid is just stand there with out any movement at all, it looks like a fucking stamp , why? again, because of a really bad use of this style. Now to the next, and probably the WORST fucking thing about this picture: the bear....more specifically the smile, it's more than a disaster, it's horrible. Don't know why but you just decided to use the pencil on it... very bad decision, it doesn't match at all with the rest of the picture. And yeah, EVEN if you want it to look like that, again... bad decision. All this makes an aweful picture and something disgusting to look at. It's a beautiful, solid, and big piece of shit. Have a great day sir. =

A respirator is your best bet, and I think they're about $15 at Lowes or Home Depot for a "good-enough" quality. The paper masks from the dollar store won't cut it with aerosol. You take it off and see the paint caked to your face from the inside rim of the mask, and you blow black paint out of your nose for days afterward.

This, because if you're gonna spray, regardless of where you are there's gonna be some inhalation so why just use a paper mask? That's like using a butter knife in a sword fight.

The conclusion that hits me after reading that rant is that it isn't so much that art is dumb, it is that studying art or the history of art in a normative way is dumb.

Oh, good point, but then what is a better way to study art and it's history?

Things:
Art is dumb because everyone thinks they are an artist even when they suck
Art is dumb because everyone thinks they are being original and new or starting some new movement
Art is dumb because people tend to overthink or underthink a piece to the point where they miss the point
Art is dumb because there's no clear division in someone who likes art (like me) and someone who is actually what would be more classically viewed as an artist (like Ornery, let's say)
/end of repetitious pseudopoem

Studying art history has taught me that art is pretty dumb, it's kinda pointless, and depending on the notoriety it is pretty ephemeral and then an art pieces age or socio-political context can increase that art pieces value just 'cuz.

The other dimension on which art is dumb involves the artist's intent versus what is perceived, if what is perceived is more grandiose than what the artist had in mind, that piece can be elevated just to do audience reception even if the value of the perception is one based on "Ooh so pretty" and not "Oh the message". It's really the audience who decides what is good, and even if you as an artist are proud of some piece and it has all the elements a typically well received piece has, you're at the mercy of an audience and you're under more scrutiny when you're audience is composed of artistic peers.

More ranting later

Kinda Banksy-esque Japati

I would do street art since I live in one of the real epicenters of that culture but I don't have the means to be Banksy, Invader, Mr. Brainwash (hahahah), Miss Van or any of the other prolific Street Artists.

I do put up my band's stickers up everywhere so guerrilla promotion is almost as good for now

You's a man Kinsei, sewing is hard (well, sometimes)

I mostly sew by hand though because it's more "relaxing" or something.

Response to: Art Forum Lounge Posted July 28th, 2011 in Art

I can feel myself slipping into a rut right now actually. I always alternate between different mediums, right now I'm on pencils and charcoal.

My remedy for that kind of thing is just looking at people who completely outclass me, just not thinking about "art" or trying a medium I don't do often (right now I'm sewing).

Doing digitally created stick people comics are not very original nor are they a decent way to gauge your skills.

We want traditional media art because it's easier to understand your level of skill and critic you.

If you want me to critique what you have; don't draw stick people, strengthen your understanding of fundamentals and after you've got a decent understanding on the human form create your own style based on things you like and things that work for you, then learn how to create panelling for comics that aren't boring, look at actual comics and see how the panels can form dynamics and guide the eye through a page.
