I know this is in violation of the rules of the COW....
but to be honest I really don't consider the people I based this off of as human exactly..
they say a artist has to pull from life experiences of him and the people around him :P
but either way since I did it here it is..... another comedy entry......
So here it is my bottom Feeder
Bottom Feeder.
"This repulsive creature works efficiently at causing mayhem with in families and drain the wallets and bank accounts of the men they target. The only sure way to avoid such a fate is to avoid the creature entirely. if this cannot be done the next best suggestion is to kill it with fire, and lots of it. Not only is killing this creature on site the law is 16 states but it is your duty as a human."

Otherwise i stick to that formula pretty close, and have had success with it.
The biggest price jacker (when it comes to anything actually) is the middle man, aka the gallery, dealer or museum. When they take a % the artist will tend to up the price accordingly. Also the dealer has their own processing and staffing fees that get thrown in. (and dont forget shipping when it applies, even though its not that much in comparison to everything else)
I think that many of us face the same middle man problem when it comes selling our art work. Sure we could sell our works ourselves, but honestly salesmanship is an art form of it's own.
But I guess if we were looking to try and sell our selves, there is always things like First Fridays and other local art walks. Then we have Conventions and then the internet. So if we wanted to deal ourselves it could be done, but I don't think many of us would have much luck.
So has anyone else tried to sell there work them selves? (e-bay, etasy, cafepress etc... not dA )
At 2/6/10 03:05 AM, ornery wrote: Print Limits
I get the point of the editions thing, (Trading Card Games whore this out a lot)
But even now, paintings can be reproduced anymore. although I admit not as simply as just hitting the print button on the copier, but all the same.
Ad for material cost, I can truly understand that. even crappy oil paints cost me a couple more bucks then I think it's worth some times. but sometimes the I feel the mark up between dealer and artist is sometimes a little much don't you think? (dA being a prime example of this).
do you follow the formula that you gave earlier, or are you a little nicer with your prices?
with me I feel it is a different example when it comes to living off my art. Although I do live off my art, it's not in a traditional sense since my profession of a Media artist...
At 2/6/10 02:46 AM, ornery wrote: To illustrate all that how bout a quick formula...
START: Oil Painting 3x4 foot canvas 6 hour at $15 an hour = $90
$90 + $30 labor = $120
$120 + $45 supply/ material cost = $165
$165 + $75 frame = $240
$240 + $150 creative attachment fee = $390
FINAL PRICE FOR A PIECE WHEN YOU ARENT FAMOUS AND NOT IN DEMAND: $390
If shown in gallery 50% cut taken from artist, most artists will double the price, so suddenly $390 = $780
Now how certain pieces reach the millions is a bit rough to say, stuff is definetly over priced, but hopefully you get the idea of how stuff is priced.
this is a great formula, but lets take it back down to a more localized level. Very few use of us are gallery level. What about prints or duplicates? Those seem, to me, to be in a different bracket rather than original works. Which makes me question the pricing of places of dA and a few other internet sellers.
Iets take something I know more about. I know ir cost something llike 150 to 200 dollars to have a both at the Phoenix Comicon, (500 For merchants) so what justifies for some (stressing the "some" part) of them to sell ther prints for 10 bucks or more?

I still think you could handle some really awesome grunge textures. the mono printing you do gives a very worn feel, which is kind of the feel a cyberpunk world needs

e.g. past wednesday, the sculpture "L`Homme qui marche I" (Walking Man I) by swiss impressionist Alberto Giacometti was auctioned for 65 million GBP (%u2248105 million USD) at sothesby`s London. Thus taking its place as the most expensive piece of art ever auctioned.
I saw the sculpture along with other work of Giacometti at an exhibition at the Rotterdam Kunsthal, and it is a very impressive work of art. It might very well be the most beautifull sculpture I know, still one could argue that 105 million is a lot of money.
discuss; What makes certain pieces of art so valuable? Do you think this is justified?
I remember hearing about that on the news.
I guess when rich guys got money to burn....
I don't know, As an artist myself, I never had the desire to own many pieces of displayable art. I say displayable because I love to have books filled to the dust cover with art. But those I mostly look in to for reference and study.
So when it comes to people wanting to spend there money on art pieces I say let them. but for 105 million? Wow, Just wow. I just don't understand the point of so much for one piece. But I guess if they can afford it....
rather have a nice car over a statue any way, but thats just me....
but to be honest the only type of art I'm really annoyed at for selling at high prices is a majority of Outsider Art
