Art as a hobby and a relaxation technique is good. I guess the reason I went for a career in art is because I found it fun. Although sometimes it's more stressful than relaxing.
Although a hobby for you, it won't hurt to learn the basics. And although you have a valid point about conforming, but that truly only applies to the basics. Once you learn those then they become more of a powerful tool rather than a conformity. Some of the most eccentric artist like Picasso, Keith Haring, and even Andy Warhol studied the basics, any they are/were anything but conforming.

Just bear with me I been drawing this way for a long time and kinda set in my ways.

well break the habit. plain and simple.
if you don't, your not going to get much farther as a artist. You need to study some basics. Simple life drawing classes will aid you quite a bit.
Start drawing from life, learn about underlying structures, study form and composition.

This may seem cruel, but abandon what you want to draw and pick up what you need to draw. After you start to get those skills down, then you can start drawing what you want to draw again.

The original sketch? Yeah it's posted a few posts up. Infact I have been posting it through the stages.
thats not the sketch, thats starting from the finished lineart, you need to plan your drawings out beforehand, with rough sketches, it doesnt take very long and will improve your work greatly, youll make less mistakes since you can changer the sketch quickly then when your happy go over it to make the final lines

Yeah Ash is right. The under sketch is a lot like underwear only a lot more stick figure and a lot less personal.
By using under sketching and frames you can solve a ton of proportioning issues that a lot of people face.
As you progress in skill the less extensive the sketching will need to be since you will gain a sense of how things go together.

All and All I think you have done a nice job.
6 hours is a good amount of time to pour in to the project like this, and although there are some anatomy issues, I think you probably learned a couple things while working on this, so thats a win.

Keep coming back with any new pieces if you want more help, feedback, and critiques. We are always willing to oblige

Careful with jumping to conclusions Cloudy.
I'm not defending Hulu's world wide streaming policies, but for the most part it is a really good site, especially for those of us who cannot afford cable.

Hulu isn't a video sharing site, it's well... a movie and TV streaming site.
it has about 80% of the most popular and current TV shows. Obviously from the US, it shows the current episodes usually 1 day after it's air on normal television. some are on a 8 day delay, but it is still quite nice to see what is going on in pop culture at the time.
Lets have an example. say some one is a fan of "Lost" but cannot watch it due to work, not home, no cable/satellite etc... Hulu provides a chance to see the most recent episode at your leisure. Again a nice convenience.
It is free, and their are few ads and they tie in similar to regular TV commercials.

The movie section, I will admit needs a much better library, but from time to time they upload a good flick or two. The movie section has also let me see a couple films I have never seen before but found good or even a taste of different types of movies.

As for it's limited streaming of movies to other countries. it all comes down to the rights that the site can secure. Since it is a free site paid for by ad and what little celebrities and donors that support it, it can only buy so many rights. Sadly usually those rights are only for the us and maybe a couple other countries.

More Hulu Movie dropping time.

This first one is a strong emotionally moving film. It start Robin Williams, thats usually a pretty good start lol.
Called Jakob The Liar

The Second is a Horror movie set in World War I. It has some pretty unique twist endings. The movie it's self has really nothing to do with the war, but it's mostly about humanity and the choices men make and don't make.
Called Deathwatch

these are some great entertainment. Sadly though I think about half of you cannot get Hulu in your countries. But if you can I would suggest trying to see them some time. Especially Jakob The Liar.

Well To Start again, I feel the head is a proper width It seems to fit. I think the ears are throwing you off a little. The ears could be brought in a little to help reduce the illusion of his head being wider than they are.
Back to the face, I assume the darkened bits around eyes are to help them feel sunk in, so he has a more gaunt ghoulish face. It would be the same with the cheek bones.

When i comes to developing the mouth, what you want to do is to do an out line of the shape you want the mouth to make, and then threw shading you define where the lips are. A similat process goes with the nose. you very lightly rough in the contour of the nose, and then threw shadows and highlights you get the outline of the nose.
Something I noticed about yuor roughted in nose on the paper is it could be moved up a little. Also the angle of the nose is a little off, turn it up more so it faces the viewer more like the resto of the head.

hope what I have drawn helps

Aww Bob, you should know better.
You should post the most recent work and best work first. if you have anything that you have done previously that is on par with your newest and best then that is ok to post. But for the most part, threat this like a new beginning.

Similar to "This is where I am now, I can only get better from here." Not "This s where I started and this is my progression to here."
Don't look to fill your thread with old dull works but new and exciting ones.

If you guys could point out a few features that really distinguishes his face that would help a lot. Also if there are any other comments you would like to share to greater my piece that would be appreciated as well. (Also sorry for the bad quality scan but my scanner is a few years old.)

well when starting the head you want to make sure you have studies ample reference, it's kind of a staple. you wanna make sure you know the facial land marks well.
When Identifying peoples faces there are two things that are most important. the spacing of the eyes from one another. and the spacing of the eyes from the mouth. Although this is a technique of artistry from police and crime scene sketches, it can be simplified and applied to normal everyday art.

That was a little more complicated than I had imagined. So lets take another course. Lets get the shape of the head down, after that in a very light hand and pencil lay in where your mouth and eyes are. Try to make sure that the distance is appropriate. after that start to lay in the wrinkles and scar as well with the face paint. slowly work your way up with shading according with your light source, and reinforcing your original feature lines.

The last thing you do is work in your facial hair and add extreme highlights with an eraser. The whitest places should be on the tip and bridge of the nose, the tip of the chin where showing, and certain places on the facial hair.

As for the rest of the pic, the biggest flaw is the finished (his) left arm the length is wrong and doesn't match the layout you have for the other arm. I know you are going to hate me saying this, but I think you need to erase it and redo it, at least from mid Bicep down.
Be careful on your abdomen, it's getting a little funky around his right ribs.
If and when you redo that left arm, go nuts with that chain. Get it big and bulky, make it scary looking threw shear size.
Lastly look at the shoulders your right seems to be doing ok, but the left needs more definition.
So far I am liking this and I think it has potential.
Hope fully you get it done soon and it gets placed in the portal.
