At 5/26/10 07:05 PM, FullFistMaria wrote: Yeah but If I didnt know what Starship Troopers was that book cover wouldnt tell me anything about the plot?Werent you saying you wanted the opposite of that?

Anyway, its all just down to taste obviously :)

sadly this cover really isn't one of the best examples of translating plot. But I could tell you that the book had something to do with that suit on the front. which actually would have been an assumption if I had not read the book or had previous knowledge. And to be more honest even if I had seen the movie(the first one not the third) it would have still been an assumption about the power suites since they weren't included in the movie...

But as you say taste is a big factor which is why I still think the cover should really have something to do with the book. when I bought this copy of Starship Troopers, there were multiple copies I could have bought. all with different covers. But I didn't like the movie cover they had, and the older covers didn't appeal to me, so I got this one.

So yes, I agree that a lot is up to taste.

I really feel that a book and cover should go hand and hand
Starship Troopers cover
the copy I have has that cover. I think it is excellent cover mostly because the art was made for the book.
And in my opinion it kind of is better that way since it gives the book a custom and unique piece, and gives some artist a job (this coming from a jobless artist right now :P)
and since casual readers will be more enticed by a cover than just the title, I think better covers would help sales.

OK maybe saying that none of the relate directly was a bad choice of words. As a direct and most notable reference is the Mountain and stars.
With the Ghostbusters those lines could be just about anything. I mean Obliviously if you put thought in to it and have seen the movie, you would know. Same thing with the Highlander cover. If you know what is going on, then yeah, you can figure it out.
Teen Wolf; again you would have to had seen the the movie to understand, with out the title or previous knowledge, the best one could come up with is something about werewolves and sports...
The Temple of Doom, Face Off, Space Jam, or Return of Killer Tomatoes would be the most confusing with out previous knowledge, some even if they some still had their titles on them.

Honestly if I didn't know what Space Jam was, then I doubt I would ever read it with such a odd cover.

Don't get me wrong I think it's some good graphic design on some, but the others I wouldn't get if I had not seen the movies or previews.

At 5/26/10 04:02 PM, MajesticBob wrote: WIP Flat colors. Now comes the part I dread. Shading.

you need to change that blue and maybe that red.
Mostly for 2 reasons
1: The colors are too harsh. They are too bright and need to be turned down to keep from hurting the eyes. You don't have to take them down to the point where they are dull, but just enough it doesn't hurt.
2: Red and blue clash, bad. Since they are both primary colors, it's tough to get them to work when they are this bright. This second reason might be easily solved by correcting the first problem.

you also may want to consider more web safe colors...

but hey it gives you more post count and allows you to space out your artwork so people can give it m more attention.
