Why is the usefulness of using layers in these 3D programs other than being able to more easily find your objects (should you have a lot of them in one scene)? Like I understand the usefulness of using layers in other programs (Photoshop, Flash, etc) but I guess I'm just so new to 3D modeling that I don't see the big picture with them.

The layers work pretty similarly to that of photoshop.
you can turn them on and off. making some parts visible and some not, which comes inhandy later when rigging.

also you can select by layer, group by layer, have different shaders and such by layers yada yada

A lot of it is organization. and although in an intro class when your not dealing with a ton of different objects they seem a little much, but when you are doing more advanced things with more objects than you can count, having good tidiness with layers will save you a lot of sanity.

Trust me, learn the basics. No matter how much you learn, or what tricks you pick up, almost everything comes down to knowing the basics. And layers are one of the things you'll be very, very glad you learned.

its alright,
But it feels like you are trying to push a lot of advanced techniques on to the piece before you really know how to use them.
I see a lot of really strong highlights that make things look more like they have been embossed filtered rather than actually giving depth and value to the piece.

Perhaps you should do some basic lighting studies with some basic geometric shapes. I think you'll find that doing them will greatly increase your skill through understanding of the basics.

Keep at it. You'll only keep getting better if you take, practice and use the advice of the other artist of this forum

its not so much as it being black listed, its that you never mention the technique when you present your work. Your the one using it as a crutch but then trying to act like your standing on your own two feet.

And if it is about the cutting of the video, perhaps you need to re edit it or cut it else where. Because just starting with the line work already down (and already matching the reference to an almost exact) it is a bit suspicious.

The grid comes in handy for replicating and enlarging and scaling down things. but when people are doing new and original things, which is what many do around here, its not as useful.

If you want to be a more successful artist, then work toward slowly getting off the grid. Eventually you'll be able to replicate from sight rather than from grid. Then that will be much more impressive.

I thought your name sounded familiar. and I looked through your post history, and well, I remember lurking your first thread and being quite disappointed.
And here we are again. I screen shot a random frame from your video and overlayed your reference pic, and well... they line up an awful lot... More than I would allow anyway.

I'll let everyone else draw their own conclusion on this, but it seems like the exact same thing you did in the first thread.

Your video as "Proof" doesn't really work either in your defense since the lines are already layed down by time the video starts up...
Your other video isn't any better since it too starts up after the line work is already down.

I'm not seeing any preliminary sketch work on the paper either. in both videos.

And then their is the pieces you have uploaded to your profile. Sure they are 8 months old, give or take a month, but they don't show the final polished level that would come with someone who doesn't need to do preliminary sketch work

Also, don't beg for subscribers, thats the one sure thing to make me not a subscriber...
also you don't need a new thread for each new piece,
and at least post the final piece in the tread instead of just posting your reference and a link to a video...

So lets see if you can earn some redemption;"Is their anything you want to tell us about these two pieces you posted?"

and when you flip it over and compair with some overlay, it look pretty much the same.

Hey if your a fan of a game, great, more power to you and your fandom, but perhaps honoring your game with a little more original art rather than some clipped images from the game would probably go a bit farther....

its fairly important unless you've considered just calling it Death Arkel :P

Hi welcome back, we all still remember you as your style is very distinctive.
I have some critique for your logo, it doesnt read for me as death angel.
for me it reads death arkel.
I think ts a cool idea how you made the logo out of guns.
But id say its way too complex. it doesnt read from a distance and only when looking closly one can see its is guns
i do actually agree with this comment, when i look at your logo i also read it as Death Arkle and if you where to scale the image down in size at all the distinction would be even harder to recognise

So This makes three of us then...
although I thought it said Ankle rather than Arkle,
Any way Yeah the logo doesn't read at all. I know you already acknowledged this as an issue. but I really want to throw my two cents in.
I would get both words on the same line, shrink down the logo and use it as a spacer in the center with the bottom of the skull dipping between the two words.
Get a far more legible font. Pop over to http://www.dafont.com/ and look through their gothic modern section since that seems to be the style you are looking for and get one you like, and can read.

also having a full font will make things a hell of a lot easier

Kern out the lettering a little to help the readability and try and get an even contour or stroke around the lettering to help drag it out of the background.
Also perhaps think of a 3rd core color you can add to the logo design to help give you a couple more areas you can go with the color scheme. Perhaps a gray or just some more white might do the trick. Again, not a must o nthis last one, but still something to think bout.

I feel like this is exactly what is happening in my own life right now. I feel like I just waste my time every night. Surfing youtube, netflix, newgrounts etc. And I keep saying to myself every damn day that I need to draw more, I need to sculpt more, need to 3d model, paint, work on miniatures. I just need to CREATE!
But I come home every night and just do nothing, just so burned out from the day, It frustrates me. But I can't seem to kick start myself in to doing more. Sure I'm lucky enough to have a graphic designer's job so I do get to do some, but its different. All I do is simple type layouts, and stuff. Any real artistic stuff I get to do is usually rebuilding someone's jpeg logo in to vector art work.

So it sounds like you got something going for you ol' buddy. So how about sharing some in depth instructions on how to keep creating in every day life?
