I agree with WAC's opinion for the most part. I do remember the times when the users voted more fairly. It seems more and more people are figuring out what "sells," and then do what they have to do to make that. They cut corners, they draw poorly, whatever, but the idea is concrete behind it. PARODIES, VIDEOGAMES, etc. is the idea for the most part.
Occasionally a well animated cartoon will snag a spot in the top 50 that does not follow those guidelines. But usually it has to be very well done, done to the point even the voters cannot deny it their 5 which they whore out so easily to all the videogame parodies, and whatever else may be raping the top 50 page.
I don't think no matter how hard we bitch and moan about this, the situation is going to change either. Newgrounds has a lot of oblivious users who just goto the frontpage and 5 movies they like, so even if we did put out a good message not only probably most people wouldn't be affected by it, but a lot of people who are 5-ing these movies wouldn't even read it.
Jonbro I think is a good example of what I am talking about - except not so much oblivious. I'm pretty sure he 5s movies like these all day, everyday. For the most part people seem to jump to the conclusion that if the animation is not complete crap, and has a reference to some sort of game or tv show, it deserves a 5. Newgrounds's community standards are sinking lower everyday it seems.
I think the situation would be different if instead of copying the original creator's style, and drawing the character in your style and animating him like that would be more acceptable in my opinion. But really it's not, I mean look at the characters in that sonic short cartoon. Sad to say but I think Wonchop's was the most original.
It wasn't a terrible cartoon as far as animation goes, and it had a videogame parody plot. I think this strengthen's my opinion of "NOT SHIT ANIMATION + PARODY = 5". I think a fair score for the submission based on animation quality would be a 3. The same score "Anusboy" has, which has much better animation.
The same problem seems always to apper X gets overrated with bad animation but some sort of appealing plot. while Y with good animation gets underrated.
I'm sure this has been somewhat said before, but this is my two fucking cents on the matter.
