True, but there are a thousand and one hacky ways to get VSTs to work via all sorts of emulation, third party applications, that sort of thing.

Also perhaps the fact the industry standard DAW doesn't support VSTs says a lot about the perceived value of VSTs... just a comment :-/

Response to: Is Magix Music Maker 15 Good? Posted June 16th, 2009 in Audio

Reason and other professional products are expensive because you are paying not just for the software, but for the legal rights to use anything that you use the software for to make money for yourself and yourself alone. It's a steep mark-up when compared to something like magix, which is developed more as a toy to play around with, and with which you do not get commercial usage rights.

Also reason is not compatible with plug ins because it pretty much IS a plug-in. It's best used when rewired onto another DAW like a massive VSTi. And you get a fuckload of samples with reason, can use any standard format samples you want and there are thousands of free refills and commercial ones both by propellerheads and other producers.

Lies. It's your music under your license and you can decide how it's used. If you ask for a track to be removed from newgrounds, then newgrounds is legally obliged to respect your ownership, otherwise they would be asking to be sued.

Micheal Nyman - The heart Asks Pleasure FIrst.Mi

One of the best post-romantic piano pieces of all time, in my opinion. Pretty difficult to play well, and damn near impossible to play the same thing, but a good challenge and it sounds amazing when you play it right

Intrestingly, there is a massive final section on all official copies of the sheet music that is never, ever played in any recording of the track ever - It was one of Nymans seminal film score tracks that the end was cut for in the movie.

Also the end is so incredibly hard, it's essentially the same as the main two sections except with precisely one less quaver in each bar, if memory serves.

They have the ability to decide if they want to put you down for revenue or not. I don't think I've had a flash animation that has done that for me yet.

Wow, that's the stupidest thing I've ever heard.

not that I'm calling you stupid for pointing it out. I'm hung-over. Nothing I type is making sense

If a flash artist uses music from the audio portal, then I personally feel that we should positively get a cut of adshare from the flashes page. Said artist is not paying NG to use that flash page, so it is not up to him where the money goes. That being said, it's not up to me either, but fair is fair.

Response to: Legality of Audio Usage Posted June 14th, 2009 in Audio

Technically, sponsorship and advertisements counts as commercial use, but it's just as easily argued by a CRACK TEAM OF NINJA LAWYERS the other way.

These flash guys aren't getting much for the work, and they're still releasing the games for free, and assuming they're being released on NG and you're being properly credited, you are getting trafficshare from the NG ads.

It would be detrimental to the progression of the audio portal to start getting picky advertisements and sponsorships of flashes, though I also do feel that there should be some sort of 'permission' feature for audio use in featured flashes as well as NG actually sending some notification to you when your song is used in anything on the site so you can check it out.

Microsoft Music Maker, FL Studio demo version (somehow I've got the XXL version), Milky/Modplug Tracker, there's plenty.

Microsoft... music maker?

Such a thing exists?

Does it have songsmith plugins?

Slow your metronome right down, I'm talking 60-100 bpm, lay out your beat then speed it up incrementally, moving bits as required to get the sound you want.

At 6/13/09 05:44 AM, Pawn007 wrote: I have read quite a few of the posts on the rules for submission into the audio portal.

Good for you! Thank god somebody does.

As I understand it a voice acting clip / demo follows the same set of legal rules as any other audio submission.

Yup.

As previously stated in other rules threads, no copywritten background music could be used. The requirement for music to be original, on the other hand, is odd.

The copyright of being original is not that difficult to explain, to be blunt, nobody on the audio portal is 100% original. I cannot think of a single electronically produced track that -doesn't- use samples or otherwise that the artist did not create, but has indirect permission to use. Generally the safest bet is, if you want music in your voice acting demo, you should use something from the audio portal and credit accordingly.

A further question.. sound effects. Are only royalty free sound effects allowed? How about commonly available? Or are you limited to what you can generate.

The short of it is, if you can find a sound effect on the internet on a website designed for giving you sound effects, it's more than likely that they are either royalty-free (you can do what you want with them) or you can use them under fair use. The long of it is, if you are particuarly cautious, you can never really be sure what is safe to use, and even big record companies have that problem - they often use what are supposedly free samples until somebody challenges that assertion. As your first NG audio submission is moderated, it is possible that a mod could identify a sound and question its usage rights, however I doubt you would get banned unless they can specifically prove that you do not have the rights over that sound. Fair use is especially flakey for that, but as what you're making is not for profit, if you state what you used and what is not directly your own work, it should be fine.

If you've already submitted before though, I hope the mods don't shoot me for saying this, but you do have somewhat more benefit-of-the-doubt, nothing will happen unless somebody claiming they own and made the sound makes a legal challenge on your right to use it. I cannot foresee that happening, especially in a voice acting competition.

The best bet if you want sound effects is to get an account on the free sound project and use them, but remember that you have to link to the page you got the sound from in your description! That is part of the Creative Commons Attribution license, which also applies to all NG work.

Response to: Don't you hate it when this happens Posted June 13th, 2009 in Audio

Oh yes, i've done this, but I've noticed it seems to -seem- to happen more than it does happen. I find I can get inspired by a particular song then not hear it for a while and make something that sounds similar, which in my mind sounds identical, but on comparison they are not the same.

And come on, it's not like the Chilli peppers aren't samey and don't use the same chords as everyone else :-P

Response to: Audacity Help Posted June 12th, 2009 in Audio

Your soundcard has to support recording audio out in order to use the feature in either of the programs. In audacity, go to preferences>recording device and change the recording device drop down (should say something like MIC or line in l/r) to whatever your soundcard refers to as audio out (creative tend to call it What U Hear, others sometimes call it line out). You can probably do the same in any other recording software if you can find the settings.

That doesn't work, even if your audio gets used in a flash that gets blammed and never clears judgement, it prevents your track being edited or deleted.

Response to: is hydrogen peroxide safe to drink? Posted June 11th, 2009 in General

Do not induce vomiting, get your ass to a clinic.

Small amounts of hydrogen peroxide are relatively harmless but outside of a medical setting there is little way to know how strong what you ingested was. Take whatever it was that you drunk with you to the hospital, and they'll be able to look it up there.

Expect a (very unpleasent) charcoal based drink to dilute it, or (even more unpleasant) stomach pumping.

Response to: Cannabis baking Posted June 11th, 2009 in General

THC dissolves poorly in water, but dissolves well into alcohol and even better into fats and oils.

For baking, the best mix is to make a cannabis based butter. It's easier to cook with hash as opposed to leaf, and this will produce a stronger mix.

For drinking, make up some stalk vodka - Open a full bottle of vodka and start putting stalks/seeds/anything else that can't be smoked in with the vodka. Once the bottle is about quarter full of stalks etc, leave it for a month or two to infuse then enjoy. It's a long term investment but it's pretty cheap to make - especially if your dealers are a bit enthusiastic with the amount of stalk they allow in their scores.

Response to: smokers help me decide Posted June 11th, 2009 in General

Generally I'd advise you not to start, cigarettes aren't worth it in the long run.

You'll enjoy it for a few months, as long as you can keep the amount you smoke down. Once you get addicted though, you begin smoking so much that you no longer feel a nicotine rush, and that's when you need to think about quitting.

Most of the anti-smoking 'OMG YOU'LL GET CANCER AND DIE' is based on studies on people who smoke more than 20 cigarettes a day, and you won't even be considered a heavy smoker until you get near that limit at medical practices. It is a scare tactic, but you shouldn't take that information lightly.

In the long run, light smokers have been shown in a handful of studies to be less susceptible to upper-respiratory tract infections (colds, flu), as a result of the slightly antibiotic/antiviral qualities of nicotine smoke as well as the increased urge to cough and sneeze which protects you from those illnesses, but the downsides really do outweigh this.

Smoking is also an effective treatment for low blood pressure, however they can also CAUSE low blood pressure from extended use, leading to a physiological addiction.

Also, it's expensive as shit.

Response to: New Grounds Help Me Fast!! Posted June 11th, 2009 in General

Do not stuff it with tissue. Tissue degrades with moisture (especially toilet tissue) and you could end up with fuckloads of paper stuck to the clot that results.

You need to stop the bleeding, hold your head back at a 45 degree angle and pinch the nose for as long as possible. Dig around your medical cabinet and see if you can find some absorbent wound dressing, it should say on the packet. If the nose bleed doesn't stop in about 15 minutes, pack the nose loosely with this dressing.

If it persists, go to a doctor, you might need to get it cauterized.

Theramins are stupidly hard to play, you're not going to be able to just buy it and use it straight away.

It's easy enough to recreate a pretty convincing theramin sound with a simple sine oscillator, some portamento, pitch bend and a distortion effect.
