Definitely. I believe that if the OP doesn't put in any effort for something, why should I? It also helps the wheels start turning.

For the most part I think it's been 2 weeks on floods and a month on contests. We could split the difference and go with 3 weeks. How does that sound?

We could/should try it.

Also... do you guys ever check, or would you make a point of checking the calendar if you knew things like the flood and contests were on there? Or... in the past, I've keep lists of going-on's on my user page... was that helpful? I could start that up again.

If all of the contests were on the NG calendar, I would check it all the time. That would be awesome :D
Would we be allowed to do that? :P I just think that if we start putting our art stuff all over the calendar, then other forums, would, which is good, but it could get cluttered.

I think Lintire is right about the regular weekly stuff being hard to maintain. Even the monthly stuff can be a chore... and it's extremely disheartening when only one or two... or zero... people end up participating. It's a case of 'we want to see more activities... we just don't want to participate' ...so we need to figure out how to balance that.

I understand that, and I was going to add that into my original post, but I guess I forgot :P
But, idk, we could try to organize something on Stickam where a few of us take turns making the starter pics. Group effort, guys!

Along with an Art Review Request thread... I had tossed around the idea of doing some sort of 'review group' (like a book club) where whoever is around could meet up in stickam or where ever (like every sunday at x:xx pm) ...and spend some time (say an hour or two) going through the art portal (scouted and unscouted) ...and as a group, review stuff (starting with the works of anyone present). So if there are 6 people, there would be 6 reviews. Is that something anyone would be interested in? or is it a completely lame idea?!

That would be... interesting? Idk, we could try it out, and if it completely flops, then oh well :P
It'd be hard to get an definite amount of us online at one time. Most of the time, people just bop in whenever they're bored, and there's a lot of issues that would stop people from making it (time zones, work/school, family poop, etc.). So, even if we have it, I guess it'll be up to whoever is in the room at the time :P

That's a great point... maybe they should limit it to one from any particular artist. That would allow for more artists to be showcased instead of the same 3-4. So instead of 5 places, Alvin would get one. Odds are people will look through his other stuff anyway.

Good idea.

Of course you can :) That is half the fun in this forum. When people post their WIPs (works in progress), it enables other artists to compliment and critique the work so far, so that the artist can make changes or adjust anything needed before getting too far into a piece, to the point where going back and fixing a major mistake means recreating the entire pic.
And don't think that giving you suggestions means you have to follow them. By all means do your own thing, but we're here to help ;)

At 4 minutes ago, ReNaeNae wrote: What makes you join in?

Interesting topics, good fellow contributors (and by that I mean appealing, interesting WIPs and such), times and cutoffs that are convenient, a lot of time to work on stuff just in case life gets in the way.

What stops you from joining in?

Not a lot of notification ahead of time, pointless bickering in thread, bad contributors, bad topics.

What types of things would you like to see more/less of?

More weekly/biweekly, fun competition. Like CHOWs, COWs, Doubles, and, of course, the Flood. :) I think the more there are, the more likely one topic/theme/thread will catch the eye of a passersby and increase their participation. Even if it's only 3-4-5 people per thread, that's at least 10 or so (I don't wanna do math :/) people drawing and improving.

What's your overall opinion of the Art FORUM (likes and dislikes), and what could be done to improve it?

Sometimes (a lot) we are dicks towards new people (myself included). Maybe more patience with them, even if they are annoying/bad at art/can't take critique? I think that instead of responding to the annoying pricks who can't take critique or nag or whatever and starting some big flame shit, we just disregard their thread entirely.

What's your overall opinion of the Art PORTAL (likes and dislikes), and what could be done to improve it?

I think that there could be more thumbnails of new art that has just been submitted. All of the popular artists always get views and upvotes and end up in the popular section, while the more obscure artists get washed out of sight. Tom did say that he was working on that, I think, so perhaps this is a pointless suggestion. :P

There's probably more I want to add, but can't atm. Might make a second post later :P

i agree... you can not sharpen something if there is nothing left!...

including a picture to show the life cycle of my average pen nib's.

i tend to get a scratchyness to the nib after a few hours after i first put a new nib on...
then over time it builds up a little fluffylike edge and i get a nice smooth angel to the nib like i would if i was using a pencil.

Agh, I hate when that happens >:(
What I usually do at that point is take the nib out, turn it 180 degrees, and put it back in. That way, when start drawing again it'll wear down that edge until it's even again :3

I'm also the kind of person that sharpens my pencil every 10 strokes or so :/

But honestly, how often do you guys go through tablet nibs? When I first bought my Intuos, I went through the first nib in about a month, but since then, I'm still on my 2nd nib. Granted, I don't use my tablet constantly, but I also increased the sensitivity on my tablet, and draw lighter, instead of pressing down really hard. :/

I don't see any reason to use Photoshop. If you like traditional then make it traditionally. A well-drawn (even if B&W) traditional piece blows a half-assed color Photoshop piece out of the water any day. If you're aiming for cartoony, it's always good to have a good understanding of realism first, but that doesn't mean you should have photorealistic people replacing all of your cartoons in a comic. At the very least, try to aim for achieving more flow and looseness with your characters, as the bomb guy looks very stiff standing there. And since it's a comic, it is unlikely that you are going to shade everything, so when/if you do color, try to make the color uniform and solid. Then again, it is a scan, so the color could be there and we're just not getting it, but I doubt that.
Also, better jokes would be cool too :P

Easy, tiger.

@OP: No need to get mad. Listen, none of us here are professionals. You can't expect some godly artist to come in here and tell you what's wrong with your piece. Because it doesn't take a professional to see what's wrong. Now, both you and Lintire have since gotten all ragey and mad, and that isn't helping you improve at all. But listen to what he was saying in his original post. He is trying to help you. Just take it easy and take his suggestions and try to apply them. They'll help. When Lintire curses, it isn't to be mean, its to emphasize. It's also because he loves you. Patience, dear Brother.

Response to: Artists: Tell me about yourself! Posted February 21st, 2012 in Art

At 1 day ago, BlackMist75 wrote: What is your favorite part of art?

I enjoy watching my progression as an artist. I like to see my skill improve over time, and be able to look back on it and know that, even though I don't feel like I did, I did improve.

What got you to start drawing in the first place?

I'm not really sure. I'm going to take an educated guess, though, and say it was from reading manga. It was a good reference and all of the action scenes really interested me. However, I don't think it set a good base for the rest of what I'm trying to accomplish.

How long have you been drawing for?

Seriously, about 3 years. Boring doodles, about 5 years. Generically, since I was 3 or 4, and I had these markers and a dry erase board... and then I would draw on the whiteboards at my dad's work when he brought me in to pick up his check, lol.

What types of artwork do you enjoy?

I am open to most art. I really dislike abstract, but I am learning to... appreciate it. I can't really say I have a favorite style of art, since I look up to many artists that use all kinds of different styles.

What programs do you use to draw/paint?

I actually prefer traditional media to digital. I feel like I have more control. I like using pencils the most, but I also enjoy using acrylics. I really dislike watercolors and colored pencils. I do create digital art, and when I do, I use my intuos4 tablet and Paint Tool SAI. I usually use Photoshop for touchup of textures. (grr, textures)

What is your best work to date?

I'm not really of fan of my own artwork... whatever I completed last is usually my favorite, but after a week or so I start to grow a hate for it... and then I just glare at it until I try to make something better to replace it. Good motivation, I guess.

Who do you look up to?

Too many to list them all, honestly. Although I can appreciate the work of famous artists, I think the ones that I look up to the most and have the biggest impact on me are the ones right here on the forum. You guys are the bestest :3

Do you have any other creative hobbies besides drawing/painting?

I play soccer :) (that's creative... right? Meh...). I've dabbled in animation, but it's not really as enjoyable for me. I don't usually have time to pursue other hobbies, so I usually just stick with the one.

Response to: Decided to crack a shot an anime... Posted February 17th, 2012 in Art

I don't want to be repetitive, so I won't repeat most of the stuff that's already been said. Hyptosis pretty much covered that.

As much as I don't want to, I do agree with Hiryu though; the face does seem a bit off. The eyes are just a little too far apart, and they almost seem to be hanging off the face. A decent rule of thumb is that there is enough space between the eyes to fit another eye, but not a whole lot more than that. Anime doesn't apply as strictly to that as, say, if you were drawing realistically, but the eyes are definitely falling off the face. :P
Also, with the eyes, the irises are very wobbly. This, with the haphazardly placed pupils, makes her appear as if she is looking in two separate directions.

Just to be curious, what program are you using?
