Response to: Sylenth vs Massive? Posted May 10th, 2014 in Audio

I've watched tutorials on how to make many types of sounds on both though, and from what I've seen, Massive just tends to give off a better, more grand sound.... Idk. I may go with that. In my (probably ignorant) opinion, Massive seems more worthwhile to learn.

Massive was one of the first vsts I got, and I've found that the learning experience I gained from it has transitioned well into the other vsts I would later use. Not trying to knock on Sylenth though, as it is also a powerful vst that would be a great thing to have in your toolkit. But for me, I had a lot more to learn from using Massive.

I think a number of people are having this sort of issue, so it's probably not just you. Seems Back-From-Purgatory sent a PM to an admin, so hopefully it will be resolved soon.

What about some comic or animation or SOMETHING on the origin of Newgrounds and how it came to be? Throw in some fantastical elements for good measure. A personal friend suggested it to me, and I kinda think it'd be fun.

If there's enough people wanting to celebrate, all of the above. Though I wonder if Tom Fulp has anything planned for this upcoming occasion himself.

Now NG was created on 6 July 1995... which means NG's 20th anniversary falls on 6 July NEXT YEAR!
I wonder what we can do to hype up the excitement for it... I was envisioning some sort of massive audio, art and animation collab, but I'd like to hear your thoughts.

Maybe we can get some of the talented folks at Animation to do some music videos for the talented musicians, hmm?

Response to: How do YOU make your music? Posted April 29th, 2014 in Audio

All sorts of ways! I've listened to music on a system before and thought how cool it would be if that one sound was like this instead of that, and would integrate it into a bunch of other pieces of inspiration until I made something that I really liked. Visualizing a story has also inspired me to make a "soundtrack" for it. Recently, there's been actual art and imagery that made me want to make something cool.

I make random melodies a lot of times, always saving them for another project in the future. It's what I usually start with. Then the beat, followed by the progression. After that, a bunch of small samples are tossed in for more flow, and I rearrange them in a lot of different ways to give them some variation.

That's the rough draft mode, at least.

Response to: Why Video Games Are A Male Interest Posted April 26th, 2014 in Video Games

Shhhh.

Where I grew up, games were considered more of a child interest than a male one. Exaggeration is a key tool in the entertainment industry in general, and I believe it's used to appeal to both sexes in their own ways.

At 4/6/14 05:40 PM, Matekin wrote: How can I recreate the lead sound that starts at 01:23? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qEU0NV0hRG0 Thanks.

I think it's a saw wave with a ton of voicing and detuning. Maybe also a touch of distortion. A vibrato effect seems to show up on the longer sustained notes. Also sounds like it's a monophonic sound, so the first couple of notes sort of glide in from another note. Cut out the lower frequencies, and you should be somewhere in the ballpark.

Hello! Have you tried PMing some of the video game musicians around here? I'm sure there are some that would gladly offer their tracks for your game in exchange for some exposure, although it would still be really awesome of you to give out a little more compensation. Be sure to properly credit them and provide some links to their audio if they agree.

Use a lot of different sounds in your tracks and have FX knobs moving around during playback. If you use FL Studio, run automation clips around to give your track some motion.

What does your ASIO panel look like? Most of the time it's because there's another program interfering with the driver.
