Response to: Fuck, Firefox. Posted June 3rd, 2007 in Programming

I was having a similar problem yesterday, my CPU was at an average of 70-80% and went up all the way to 100 a few times... and I believe it was firefox doing this. But once I rebooted, everything went back to normal.. however, hours later it happened again. I then rebooted again.

It hasn't happened since then, but I too am curious of the reason.

If you'd have read what he said completely, you'd know he already stated that he has compacted it.

Response to: how do I use xscale Posted June 2nd, 2007 in Game Development

_xscale is a property, just like _x is.

The value of _xscale is to be a percentage, 100 being normal, 50 being half, 200 being double, etc.

So for example, you can make a movie clip with this code on it:

onClipEvent(load){
this._xscale = 50;
}

That would make the movie clip half as wide.

If you used the value of -100, it would be flipped backwards, -50 would flip backwards and make it half as wide.

Exactly, therefore we should be kind enough not to worry what his occupation is, because we have a chance of being hired for a job. It's never a good idea to get into the personal business of and/or be rude to a potential customer.

So don't worry about what his job is, it's not important. All that's important is if he ever will return to this thread, and if so, who he may pick to do this job.

It is a business he is making this website for, the firefighting industry is a business, even though it is governmentally run.

If a business like Sony came to you and asked for you to make something for their website, would you do it for free? If you would then you truly are an incredibly generous person, but this virtue will not help you in capitalistic economic system like the USA (that is, if you live here, but you have not designated a location in your newgrounds profile so I can only assume).

Furthermore, it does not necessarily make us greedy for wanting to make some money for putting time into something for someone else.

And no, I don't ask my girlfriend to pay for me, I use my money... some of which I gain from doing projects like this xD

Response to: Anyone know how... Flash Intros? Posted May 28th, 2007 in Game Development

I can produce a very professional intro however, due to being motivated by knowing you are giving me your money in return.

Let me rephrase that, it sounds bad:

Because you will be paying me for my work, I will be highly motivated to make sure it comes out well, as opposed to working for free and not really caring too much of the turn out.

Hello, I can make you a nice intro for under $80.

Contact me via email for examples of my work, do not look at my flashes on Newgrounds, I have not submitted anything here for quite some time, due to the fact that I work more on projects like this than actual movies/games.

Again I can provide some examples, an estimate on price, etc. via email. I can produce a very professional intro however, due to being motivated by knowing you are giving me your money in return.

Response to: hey, about Flash mx Posted May 27th, 2007 in Game Development

Listen up, Adobe Flash (formerly known as Macromedia Flash) is the name of the program that can be used to make Flash SWF files, which are what you submit to the NG flash portal.

As time goes on, programs become outdated and therefore need to be updated/upgraded.

Flash MX was the name of the program used about 3 years ago (I still use it a lot due to it's quicker response times due to less CPU usage (although I also use newer versions)). Flash MX was the full name for Flash 6. A year after, Flash 7 was released, then Flash 8.

Now we have Flash 9 which came out recently, but it's full name is Flash CS3 (due to it's inclusion in the 3rd release of the Adobe Creative Suite collection).

So there you have it, you could purchase the new CS3 if you'd like.

Response to: need help uploading Posted May 27th, 2007 in Game Development

Ugh... if you're talking about newgrounds, you are wrong. NG in fact doesn't accept shockwave and only accepts flash into the flash portal.

Perhaps you exported wrong or something?

You need to elaborate on your problem

Response to: RTS -need help Posted May 27th, 2007 in Game Development

Put this in the frame:

_root.onMouseDown = function() {
mx = _root._xmouse;
my = _root._ymouse;
};
_root.onEnterFrame = function() {
if (mx < _root.barracks._x) {
dx = _root.barracks._x - mx;
} else {
dx = mx - _root.barracks._x;
}
moveSpeedx = dx / 10;
if (mx < _root.barracks._x) {
_root.barracks._x -= moveSpeedx;
} else {
_root.barracks._x += moveSpeedx;
}
if (my < _root.barracks._y) {
dy = _root.barracks._y - my;
} else {
dy = my - _root.barracks._y;
}
moveSpeedy = dy / 10;
if (my < _root.barracks._y) {
_root.barracks._y -= moveSpeedy;
} else {
_root.barracks._y += moveSpeedy;
}
};

You're gonna want to trash the on(press) handler and put the onLoad clipevent handler on the frame, obviously changing it from a clipevent to a function.

In my opinion, you should put all code on the frame, you have much greater control over what goes on.

Aim/deadaim Question Posted May 21st, 2007 in Programming

I have DeadAIM 4.5 installed for AIM 5.2
(incase you do not know, DeadAIM is a program that modifies AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) to add a handful of features. It's an older program and no longer being updated because all of the features it adds are now in AIM)

While the new AIM software (version 6) includes many of the features offered by DeadAIM, I prefer the older AIM client for a number of reasons (less resource heavy, more organized, much cleaner, faster, preferred template, etc.).

To conclude my scenario, I shall now begin to state my question:

AIM has now released a feature known as "Offline IMs" (ability to send an instant message to another user of the service while they are not signed on to AIM). With my older version of AIM, when I send an instant message to someone who is not signed on, an error message pops up stating that the user is offline and cannot recieve IMs.
**This error message pops up on my screen, it is not sent by AIM or stated anywhere within the AIM conversation. It pops up on my screen without needing to connect to anything.**

I want to know how to disable this window from popping up, allowing the IM to be sent and handled from there. Because the messages are saved to AOL's database full of offline IMs, so I believe if I can disable any blocks that are occuring locally from the program, I can have the message get through and then be handled by whatever function is used to save messages to sent to users not found to be signed on.

Basically, I'm looking for a patch or walkthrough on how to be able to allow offline IMing on AIM 5.2

THANK YOU!!!
~Jeremy

Response to: Screenwidth in php? Posted May 20th, 2007 in Programming

Just change width='$width' to width='100%'

And it looks like you're tryign to display the width too because you have:

<td bgcolor='black'>
$width
</td>

Just use the javascript there to output that.

I don't think he want to use a mask for it. Because it's a drag to have to duplciate and enlarge it to the way size you'd like it and everything. Also it'll make file size larger. I think he wants a full actionscript approach on it.

Response to: Proffesional Freelance? Posted May 18th, 2007 in Game Development

It is possible if you have a popular enough site. Newgrounds lives off of ads and Tom's business is newgrounds last time I checked?

But making 1.50 a day is nothing. If you got a part-time job, and you're in the US, minimum wage is like 6 something. So wit ha part time job you can make like at least $18 a day if you work 3 hours.

So if you plan to count your 1.50 a day as a part time job you are incorrect.

should i confront him? Posted February 13th, 2007 in General

My friend's grandfather has just died; my parents told me this because they are in communication with his parents. When it was brought to my attention, I quickly replied that I wouldn't bring it up to him. To my surprise, my mother exclaimed that I must. I was confused at this and requested clarification. She attempted to explain that saying something like "I'm sorry your grandfather passed away" is the right thing to do. I replied that I felt this was wrong because it would 1) remind him further of what happened, 2) possibly make him more sad, 3) possibly make him feel upset that everyone's finding out, etc.

She gave the phone to my father and he tried to explain the same thing and added that it is etiquette.

I told them that I would ask others what they feel because I don't agree that it's the right thing to do, I think it depends on the person and the situation. Also, he's my friend, I know him better than they do.

What do you think? Is it the right thing to do, wrong thing to do, or something else?

Jordan, while I'm a big fan of FireFox, I think your sigs are horrible, and you need to improve your skills in graphic design.

Why not just make a PHP GDL script that generates the sigs with the name the person using it puts in?
