Yeaaaaaah this whole story sounds sketchy. He didn't even bother to tell the lady he at least felt uncomfortable? If he was actually raped though, I feel bad and I hope he gets the help and support he needs to get through this. If he's lying, then he's a fucking asshole.

Yeah, we're pretty small in the grand scheme that is the universe. But that doesn't undermine our influence on each other, which is incredibly significant.

I guess friendships in general. Since I slacked off in high school, I had to really bust my ass when it came to studying my first year of college & working 2 jobs to pay it off. I have friends, but a lot of them have established their own close friends group by now and I kinda regret not putting myself out there more when it was a perfect opportunity to meet new people & build strong connections.

I go hiking and stuff but I can't be bothered to go to a gym. I still have fairly bad social anxiety and hate people.

I just rely on eating right.

Google and YouTube can be your best friends. Look up at-home workouts that utilize body weight. Something as basic as push-ups is SEVERELY underrated IMO as an exercise, it does wonders for your arms & pectorals. If you have the money I suggest investing in dumbbells, those adjustable would be ideal but they can be pricey ($100+) depending on the brand. Good on you for eating right!

Response to: Fat Shaming Posted August 10th, 2014 in General

I think if one has the time, they should definitely work out. Not just because "you'll be skinny". You gain muscle & going on a scale will make you feel like shit because the scale falsely tells you the fat isn't coming off when it is, it's just being replaced by muscle. But exercising has sooo many benefits to your health, so much so that even if you're not a size 0 you will overall just be a happier and more energetic person.

Even if someone's overweight (not obese, but they have some extra pounds for their "average" height and age group), if they're putting in the effort to exercise, you can tell pretty easily. And that's really all any decent person asks for, is that you're trying.

More sluts for me.
Also, I think the term "feminist" has one sided implications. I'm all for equal rights, but prefer the term "equalist" because it implies that all gender issues are female related, women have it worse, but men have some issues that we need worked out.
The term you are looking for is "humanist". You want to better the cause for all of humanity. That would make you a humanist.

The problem I see with the term "humanist" is it doesn't address sexual inequalities (unequal pay, military drafting, etc.) and humanism's basis is focused more on existential issues. If you wanna use a better term, I'd use "equalist".
But feminism does bring into light issue that affect men too.

Response to: Gentrification: Thoughts/Solutions? Posted July 11th, 2014 in General

I gotta agree with Luis that some degree of gentrification is good. I've seen ghettos turn into decent places to live in where I'm from but with it came community centers, after-school programs, etc. It sucks for any family businesses or local bodegas that are directly affected by chain stores or big corporations buying them out, maybe there's some way to petition to the mayor to keep things like that?

But like someone else said, all the people that lived in the ghettos don't just disappear. They move into decent neighborhoods and any delinquents/small time criminals fuck it up for the rest of their time there.
It's already happened to my neighborhood, and it does suck but hey, maybe in a few decades or so gentrification will happen in my town and then the ghettos will go back to being the ghettos.

It seems like just one fucked up cycle

That's a misnomer. Infidelity isn't the same as promiscuity, but they can go hand in hand.

I think infidelity is absolutely worth the shaming, because that's morally unsound. That would be deception and an infringement of someone's trust, if the relationship had agreed to monogamy.

Slut is a pretty negative term, and people who want/like to have sex shouldn't be shamed for it.
Of course when people are not safe STDs become a public health issue, but given the rate of STDs being present in the population, its really nothing to be that concerned over. There aren't any major spikes in rates, and I definitely feel it has to do with proper sex education. You can't prove STDs are a result of people being promiscuous, there are many other factors. Males can have asymptomatic STDs and have no idea they're spreading it to other females/people can be born with HIV or contract it through needles/one could have contracted an STD by a cheating partner/etc.

Basically, as long as people are safe, why should anyone care what people do under the sheets?

Gotta play devil's advocate here, but whose to say she didnt send him a pic of her in her bra and underwear? I don't know if that really could be considered "child pornography" since her genitals and breasts would be covered if that's the case, it would pretty much be the same if she wore a bikini.

Of course if that isnt the case then she should be charged with child pornography as well.

At 7/10/14 11:12 PM, Bit wrote: Nobody else seems keen on discussing the topic, so I will.

The video you linked showed a very, very poor speaker. He was obviously misinformed about the details, and unable to accurately convey the message he was trying to get across to his audience.

If I understand his argument, he seems to be saying that a father's lack of involvement in his son's life can lead to a problem during social development. Many young men, who do not have a father figure whose example they can follow, can run into trouble later in life when they do not develop effective strategies for dealing with social situations.

You may attempt to belittle these Men's rights conferences, but can you honestly say that having so many young men who grow up without a father figure is not a problem in society? The truth is that a lot of troubled men did not have a father (or a mother) taking an active role in their life and helping them channel their energies rather than commit crimes.

And, WahyahRanger, congratulations on filling half the thread with posts about fedoras. You are a comedic genius. Well done. Really.

The question that was asked had to do with suicide and mass or school shootings, and the first thing the speaker states is mental health issues being present (recorded) in most cases, which I do believe is the major reason.

Of course not being raised by a father or some type of parental, authoritative figure is not beneficial to a child. But staying to the specific question of school shooting, they have been seen to be committed primarily by white males even though almost 70% of black children and 40% of hispanic children grow up in single parent homes (most likely single mothers). There are issues withing the black and hispanic community that I do believe are a result of not having a father figure around, but it's irrelevant to the question in the video.

I'm not trying to make this into a race issue, but there are way more significant aspects to mass shooting and suicide that the speaker either doesn't touch upon or just breezes by (Mental health being the main one).
