Response to: is it possible? Posted October 15th, 2009 in Game Development

Yes, but it would be faked. Essentially the background would be a movie clip that makes it APPEAR to be your character running. You know what I mean?

Not sure about tutorials, you'd probably just need a light gun game one, and when the background needed to move, just swap out the Background Movie Clip with Actionscript.

I hope that helps. :)

No, there's no reason they shouldn't. Is it giving you an error?

Maybe the files are broken?

Response to: Moving around motiontweens on stage Posted October 15th, 2009 in Game Development

Eh, all are welcome if you'd like to try. If not, though, there may be more in the future if this one works out well, so when you gain the experience you think you need, keep an eye out! :)

In fact, the reason I knew the solution I gave you was BECAUSE I entered 5 Shades of Red way back in the day. I learned a ton from that collab. It was the first one I ever entered.

Response to: Moving around motiontweens on stage Posted October 15th, 2009 in Game Development

Quick and easy way: Make the entire timeline into a movie clip (copy/paste all frames and layers). The whole thing. Then just resize your single movie clip and center it on the stage!

Bam, done in seconds! :D(Now that you have extra time, you can join the 5 Shades of Orange collab. Cough cough.)

Man, good luck! That's a rough age group/gender to motivate.

My only suggestion would be to make an awesome reward that is the leading goal for the motivation. Like a rock climbing trip, or something fun like that. And remember: One day they'll look back and be really grateful for all the work you're doing, but they may not say so right now. Keep at it, you're helping them in the long run!

Gah, for some reason it added weird symbols into the first post. Could a Mod help me out here and remove them? Appreciated!

Also here is a 5 Shades of Orange signature if you'd like to use it and help spread the word!

5 Shades of Orange Collab! Posted October 15th, 2009 in Game Development

Many moons ago, a collaboration series began that would one day live in Newgrounds History. Now, it has returned!
Welcome everyone, to the latest 5 Shades Collab! Those of you who remember the collabs may remember me as Space_Chicken, and after 5 Shades of Purple I was SUPPOSED to take over for mynamewontfitin and continue things in his brilliant footsteps. How long ago was that? Yeah, it doesn't matter, what matters is the here and now and that 5 Shades is back in action! Don't worry, myname still approves of this, I made sure.

Response to: Wacom Pen Help! :( Posted October 14th, 2009 in Game Development

A drop is the number one killer of magnets, so if it is magnet based, it may be screwed. I'm sorry.

Sometimes my Wacom mouse gets a little funny, so I just restart the computer. I assume you already did that though. Looks like you're going to have to replace it.

Or call/email Wacom, they may be able to help! Good luck.

Response to: What's Your Animation Life. . . Posted October 14th, 2009 in Game Development

Response to: The "i Love Boobs" Collab! Posted October 14th, 2009 in Game Development

Ha ha, that's amusing. Okay, I think I've figured out something to do.

I'm going to try to, but I warn in advance that I suck at drawing girls because I was too embarrassed in my younger days to do so. :P

Here goes!

Response to: The "i Love Boobs" Collab! Posted October 14th, 2009 in Game Development

Sweet, but still, any examples? I'm not sure how to do a collab entry called "I Love Boobs" without... um... well with making the point be raising awareness/funds for Cancer research.

Response to: What's Your Animation Life. . . Posted October 14th, 2009 in Game Development

Ooo, a JKA! That's eerily close to me, a JKR.

Anyway, my animating life started off as a cartooning life. In Middle School and High School I produced several comic series, including Fred the Monkey and Space Chicken Adventures (separate at the time). At the end of High School I attended a week long workshop at the Disney Institute for animation. It was during that long, difficult week that I knew I wanted to do that sort of thing all the time. It was so much fun, as exhausting as it was.

I attended college for Animation, and proceeded to fail completely. So I switched majors and taught myself Flash from books and tutorials. I then went on to create FredtheMonkey.com where I now update weekly with new cartoons and get tens of thousands of visitors a month. Not too shabby for someone who flunked out of animation school! :P

I'm still learning as I go and can't wait to see what's next.

Cool thread!

That sums it up. You just need to make sure that the frames continue all the way across the animation and aren't only in the first frame.

I'd highly suggest you check out a book like the Lynda series because it will help you a lot if you're new to Flash, or if you just need some refreshers.

Response to: the ease button Posted October 14th, 2009 in Game Development

Essentially easing is what makes animation go from average to really well done looking. In real life people don't just stop and start instantly, they slow down as they approach the end of their movement. So use easing a lot to add that extra layer to your tweens. It really does make a huge difference. :)

Response to: Tips on a game Posted October 14th, 2009 in Game Development

Cool, this seems like it could be turned into a really fun game if you put it all together right.

Comments/Suggestions:
It stutters pretty badly on my computer when there are so many effects going on at once. It's not an old computer, either, so you may want to cut down a touch on the flair at least until the game mechanics are all in place and fun to complete. Also I don't understand the little divider sign one (second down in the row of them) because it doesn't do what I would expect it to, I guess. Maybe make that symbol more clear? I don't know.

Anyway, nice job so far, good luck with it!

Response to: The "i Love Boobs" Collab! Posted October 14th, 2009 in Game Development

I'd love to help with this since it promotes awareness for such an important topic (and who doesn't like breasts?) but the deadline is fast approaching and I have pretty much zero ideas. Is anyone done and can share what they have? Maybe that will spark something and I can rush to complete a small animation by the deadline.

Anyone?

Response to: Swf To Video File Posted January 19th, 2009 in Game Development

I'd also love to know. Especially if there's one that preserves movie clips. All my animations use multiple timelines...

Response to: First timer here, I need help!!! Posted January 14th, 2009 in Game Development

Any way to convince you to do something a little more original than just another shape cartoon? Maybe?

I dunno, I'm getting tired of them... Good luck anyway.

Response to: Game character Preiview Posted January 14th, 2009 in Game Development

It's a start. I'm not a fan of the stick arms and legs and think it would be 100% better if you make them not just lines. Otherwise I do like the hands and weapon, and the face area works fine. The hair seems off to me for some reason, but I can't pinpoint why. Perhaps because of the line difference in weight.

Good luck!

Response to: I hate secks. Posted January 13th, 2009 in General

I felt similarly when I was 13-ish. Disgusted me. That changed over the following years and when I got married it became a very nice form of intimacy. Hang in there!

Response to: Shape Spam on Newgrounds Posted January 11th, 2009 in Game Development

They are... very interesting. I can see how quickly it would get old, but then I remember the days of "Mario in the Matrix" when every other flash submission was a parody of the Matrix with Mario. OH! And who could forget the "series" where two characters would slowly move across the screen and kiss? Those were beyond awful... Uhg.

Neo Orb game: Instructions Posted July 24th, 2008 in General

Hey everyone.

I put Neo Orb (a new game) on the portal today, but was out most of the afternoon so I didn't get to see people's replies. Some folks didn't know how to play, because the tutorial is the intro and they skipped it. Oops. So I thought I'd explain it here, in case anyone who tried it earlier was still confused.

http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/45 0465

You have to swap pieces from the sidebar to the main field to line up three in a row. But you aren't limited to ONLY the pieces that will make three disappear. You can keep swapping them out until you can make a chain/combo, if you want. But the pieces need switched from the side to the main field, that is the key.

I hope that clears up any confusion! Again, sorry about that. I hope you'll try it out again now that you have a better idea of what to do. :)

Ohhhhh, cool, cool. Yeah, I think I agree. Poor Monster got steamrolled by Blockhead. Not that he isn't great, but it was just a short and not a full episode. Doh.

I guess that's the way it is, competing with the big series cartoons. I know I always cringe when I submit something on the same day as illwillpress.

Nooooo... Oh well. Thanks anyway. If you come across one, let me know.

Sadly I don't have time to start from scratch (not to mention I suck at scripting) so I guess I'll put the idea on the backburner until something comes along.

Response to: Puzzle game in Flash - links/ideas? Posted March 26th, 2008 in Game Development

No, I actually saw that one. I'm more trying for this.

Clearly at Bejeweled rip off, but it's more the direction I need.

I'm trying to make a simple puzzle game in Flash, just for fun. I have the idea already, and some art, but don't know where to begin on the actual "creation" end. Can anyone point me in a good direction?

It would be a grid-based puzzle game like Bejeweled or Jewel Quest. I looked around here and at Flash Kit, but I'm kind of stuck. Any help is very much appreciated!

Thanks.
