I agree with this one;
To me, it doesnt matter what response a piece of art evokes (needs more boobies! LOLZORS); its more about the intent of the artist.
... of the self...
Or of any feelings the artist has, opinions he has or even things he can imagine.
...that cannot be otherwise expressed.
I can not agree with this. If you make a distinction between art and other expressions you can not define art as "those expressions that can only be expressed through art".
That would only lead to:
Art= Those expressions that can only be expressed through art(=those expressions that can only be expressed through art(=Those expressions that...et cetera)))
However; if you just say that all expressions are art, you run into another problem.
What if I tell my friend I watched a beautifull sunset this morning; that is an expression of my experience/opinion; is it art?
At first you might say no; but consider this poem:
This morning I awoke when my alarm was still sleeping;
Greeting the spring I looked out of the window,
I watched as the sun painted my garden,
the grass hadnt quite dried yet
and in the trees you could see spots
where it hadn`t quite mixed the right colors yet.
Most (or at least more than before) would consider this art. Still its about the exact same subject as what I talked to my friend about.
Im not quite sure how to circumnavigate this problem; but I think I like this solution:
All expressions are art.
Of course; this solution can only be acceptable if you accept differences in quality of art. And even though it might be a popular conception that you can not compare art, it is getting compared and valuated on a day to day basis.
You cant compare art in the sense that you cant compare words. What is a better word; Door or Window? You can not make a meaningfull judgement about that. However, you can say which one is better in relation to a certain expression. If I mean the thing thats made of glass that I can look out of, but cant open; Window would be the better word to use.
Likewise you can compare art; not necessarily with other pieces of art, but with other possible ways to express something.
I like these discussions; and I want to thank bmk for bringing them into the loung ever so often.
I think its funny you started from the mask; cause thats the part I like least... I love the feet; hands are a bit small great character overall

I dont agree; on first sight it looks nice; but reflections really dont work like that unless you have a flat shape.

You are Steve Gondola, but your friends always call you "Aubergine-body McWiggly-arms the Cyclops". You dont know why they call you that; but you wish they`d stop doing it.
You`re always telling them "Please stop calling me that." and they say "Stop calling you what, Aubgergine-body McWiggly-arms the Cyclops?" And then you say "Steve, It`s Steve Gondola BITCH!", and then they say "What are you talking about? We never call you steve."
What will you do?

By the way, I think I improved a lot more compared to the other skull I did before. The difference on this one is that I actually worked from a model rather than a photograph.
The downside of having a real model is that you can look at it from different angles; Thats probably what you did for its denture.. it seems a bit skewed near the edge. like you see too much of it.

dont rely on those votes; poeple will zero it because it doesnt have sonic or titties in it....
focus on the reviews rather than the score.

I Like M-vero`s suggestion;
Just make a drawing in grayscale; then use the color picker to select white and your chosen color; go to Image>Gradient Map
At 4/15/10 01:05 AM, Aigis wrote: Is there a particular reason why we are not allowed to go in the other direction as well?
As I said in the starting post; "This (monochromatic) can mean a number of different things, but for this collab we will use the following interpretation..."
This is a more or less arbitrary decision; but its important that everyone sticks to it.
At 4/15/10 02:39 AM, Ashman wrote: can we go from black to white, since its only one colour? i know you wouldnt prefer it but would it be allowed
No; its not allowed. you can draw in black and white and then edit it though
and to all the people, use a darker colour, it gives you more shades to use.
Using a darker color is possible; but it will make your image look less vibrant; since its less saturated. Also; dont get anywhere near black, or Ill set loose renaenae on you!

Independent record stores?
Coincidentially; International Record Store Day was introduced exactly for the reasons you state above.
Thats April 17th

He means its hard to give advice if you dont know what to advice on... Those subjects you mentioned are just some of all aspects of making a drawing; and many books have been written about each aspect. If you want specific (i.e. usable) advice; you need to ask what you want advice on specifically.
Another thing I could really use help with is learning to draw shapeless, flowing things like liquids, fire, loose fabric, explosions, clouds, smoke, etc. I always start by drawing the solid objects first and then drawing lines to represent the direction the substance is flowing. Sometimes I just can't visualize how fire, water, or especially smoke would act. What's your method?
See? thats a good way of asking advice. Except that an example would be nice.
The point with flowing stuff like water and more specifically fire; is that we know what it looks like but we dont really know what it looks like. (contradiction I know).
What you need to do; is take a reference picture and try to duplicate that. Study the shape of the flames; the colors.... Our eyes and brain can not deal with all the visual information you get, thats why it makes selections. You remember exactly enough to recognize fire; but you dont know what it looks like exactly. This is true for anything (which is why references are usefull) but specifically for flowing things.
IMPORTANT POST! READ THIS!
Because there seems to be some misunderstanding about the whole Monochrome thing, and because it will be difficult to create it with traditional mediums, Renae and I have decided that we will edit pictures if we feel they are not monochromatic enough. We will try to stay as close to the original picture, but will edit some colors.
Just to be clear; we want you to make a gradient from white to your chosen colour; you can use any color on that gradient, but no others.
we might post some ways to acheive this in flash or photoshop later
One last thing; Please refrain from tagging your drawings; We will show your username alongside your art in the flash. You can discreetly sign it if you want, or incorporate your name in the actual artwork.

In one specific instance in February 2010, these royalties were said[6] to amount to $700.
In European Union (EU) countries the copyright in the song will expire December 31, 2016.[7]
