I especially like the left side, the right side is not that good, I think I took a pretty difficult angle , but never mind.
ps. feel free to post your own charcoal drawings/pictures, for comparison.
I'm currently using
vine charcoal
kneaded eraser
some toilet paper and a feather for blending.
I think I used normal drawing paper for those two, but I will try using a pastel-block I have lying around somewhere.
thanks for all the tips people,

thanks, Here is a still-life (rubberduckie) I just did with a start-in-the-middle approach

I think what you're doing is just using the charcoal as a thick tool for crosshatching. I, on the other hand, smudge my whole canvas so I can get a good tone going before I go into more detail.
I was actually considering this technique, since I had a lot of trouble getting the right tones/shades
I will try that
starting out with a face isn't a great idea. Do some still life to get used to this stuff
I was just halfway thorugh a portrait of ray charles; I already thought faces would be a bit difficult to start with. It's just that I always find still life pretty boring.
I'll give it a shot though, thanks.
So, I decided to take my drawing box my parents gave me for my birthday 10 years ago, and did some charcoal work.
I've never worked with charcoal before, so I decided to use a reference picture
This being my first charcoal thing, I'm not totally unsatisfied with it, but it obviously lacks in some respects.
I first thought I had messed up the mouth, but later figured out I just tilted the nose and eye (brow) too much, so that he isn't looking up anymore, but directly at you.
Does anybody have any helpfull tips, tools for a beginning charcoaler?
p.s. sorry for the rather bad quality, had to take a picture in absence of a scanner

PEOPLE! stop asking everyone to draw your name; the thread is called "draw the person above you" not "ask people to draw you".
If you draw the person above you someone else will draw you.
(since I didn't add a picture to this, feel free to draw someone above me
So if I get it right this would be the one

Alot of you aren't sending me .flas, I only have a few. :( I don't want to have to use jpgs everywhere.. vectors allow for so much more.
.psd is fine right?

As for yours, I kinda like the spacesuit, but his face lacks details... And it's pretty amusing to see he's not wearing a jumpsuit below his suit...
The lack of detail on his face was actually intentional, kind of a style/thingy... But I guess, you can either like it or not. Lack of jumpsuit occured to me but I also found it quite amusing so I left it out.
As for your work (both of them). Pretty good, but those glows distract from the main focus, instead of seeing all the detail you put into them, you only see flashing lights (ooooh flashy).
Yea

nice work btw.
The thing is that grids are only usefull if you want to redraw a painting/picture. I generally don't do this (because I don't like it). But it depends on whether you think repainting a excistent work of art is cheating

Anyone up for drawing a goldfish with a tomahawk?
Here he is
I generally draw 'stick' figures (at 33%), than add the muscles (at 50%), and finally the clothes (at 100%). I find this a very rewarding strategy when drawing people and animals.
However I think the way we have been handling this topic is very rewarding, since it teaches you to really look at a picture and find the things that are wrong.

I always thought it was too sketchy. And what do mean by the first part of your comment? You should work on your phrasing. Are you saying my other drawings are uncreative?
I like it. try to do more work like this.
the first part meant that, to draw a really great picture, you need to add something of yourself to it. If you can make a picture that is exactlly like in true life, why not take a photograph?
In the 'demons' drawing you really did something different.
p.s. This does not mean your other drawings are bad, that last self portrait was actually quite good too.

You don't need that crease, it is pointless. Also; good work on the 'upper' leg, but now the 'lower' leg seems a bit off. It should meet the other leg a little higher. see picture for details.
p.s. I suck at ms paint
This is one I also submitted to the metropolis disaster thread; I call it Metropolis Desmurftion
Well, here he is. Kind of a traditional spacefaring person I guess. Person was drawn with a tablet in photoshop, background was photoshopped by me.

I think noir (or at least frank miller's work) is about positioning... Study some of his work, it is not very detailed, but positioning and perspective is a main factor.
But above all in noir, Light is the most important thing (paradoxical isn't it) work with your lighting...
sorry I didn't have a picture, I know from experience that this is very difficult
