For started He should know the basis of a language, the logic. ( Arrays Booleans Code Comments console Functions If statement Loops Math Numbers Objects OOP Popup boxes Strings Switch statements Ternary Operator Variables).
I discourage him the use of a software for started.
Why not try the new technologies Html5 ( Html + Canvas Or dom + Javascript ).
It's a good start or you can still refer to the Flash format ( As3 Or Hax )
