Look, I hate to break it to you, but if you want these drums to sounds good, it takes a lot. To properly mic a drumset, it can take at minimum 5-6 mics (and that doesn't cover everything). Drums are the hardest thing to get anyways just for free. For now, electronic makeovers of drums might have to work, but keep trying, maybe something will come through.

I find it a good trick when you want to make a track sound really intense, try to make it sound as full as possible on a lower volume.

Thanks! I'll have to remember that technique when I'm mixing, that could help some of the overpowering bass problems I tend to have.

-And yes, noise-canceling headphones are glorious and heaven-like, get some!
-To get a full sound between the different instruments (volume-wise), I turn every single instrument down to "zero" in the mixer, and raise some up to certain levels. For example, I might turn the melody up to 75 here and the bass to 60 here, I want to here the melody cause it's catchy. It's kind of an experimental thing at first, but it can get some great results (you can work with the same idea in panning, starting at zero and imagining where you want the sound coming from, etc.)

-Ew! yeah, ear infections probably aren't fun, that stinks.

Lol, that much i do know. I have to use headphones a lot though because of the setup I've got (can't go buy anything better atm). Those can be the danger. Outside speakers are usually better if you get the right ones, yes.

-If you're half deaf already? Well, you could prevent further damage, there's a certain point where you can't though, idk where that is, but I hope I don't find out!

Haha, that's probably true. I think they're already working on it actually, I saw an article a while back where a scientist was working on a laser encryption device that could receive sound information when the laser was pointed at the device transferring the sound (i'm not a "science" guy so if that's "impossible," bear with me on that statement, lol). But yeah, I'd like to see that, it would be quite interesting. Then again, I don't plan to become Beethoven just to test the device out :P

Yes "Anima-Theory," this is a serious topic (80% serious, 20% what ever the heck everyone else makes it :P)

-Haha, laugh at your friends, they'll see you laugh, but they can't hear it, what a shame!

-For some reason, I mix better when my volume is louder, does anyone have any suggestions as to mixing at a low volume, but still mixing effectively and efficiently?

-Another reason to keep your ears: Hearing aids are not in style, despite what you might have heard, or not heard for that matter ;)

Well, at an early age, it helps with some of the brain development, maybe not "smarter," as you are saying. It is a calming agent though. A study on lab mice in a maze had 3 mazes, one with no music as a comparison model to the mazes with music, one maze with classical music playing around it, and one with heavy metal playing around it. The mice went through each maze, and the mice listening to classical music did the best. The mice listening to heavy metal while in the maze starting killing each other! Perhaps classical music relaxes the mind for a short period of time, creating an open mind that is ready to think?

-That's a whole other topic though, this topic is about "keeping your ears" as I like to call it. I guess that's one way to relax them though :P

-Another way to help save your ears is limiting the use (if you can, there's a lot of dedicated artists here that probably stay up 'till all hours of the night writing music, and I know that's fun, lol). If anything, the alternative is to keep it down of course, but for louder music, a shorter listening span is encouraged.

-An article my dad sent me about a great songwriter, found it to be interesting, AND it has to do with this thread. I believe it to be from wikipedia? Enjoy though!

Steve "Luke" Lukather (born October 21, 1957) is an American Grammy Award winning guitarist, singer, songwriter, arranger, and record producer best known for his work with the rock band Toto. Lukather has also released several solo albums and, as a studio session guitarist, has arranged, composed, and recorded on over 800 number one albums.[1] While his work with Toto is predominantly based on pop rock music, Lukather's solo work spans many genres including rock, prog, jazz and funk.

Notable session keyboardist David Paich and session drummer Jeff Porcaro asked Lukather to join in forming their band, Toto, in 1976 when Lukather was nineteen years old. He has been a member of Toto ever since. Lukather's talent at guitar playing and his association with Paich and Porcaro, already established session musicians, allowed him to obtain a great deal of session work in the 1970s and 1980s. He is a prolific songwriter, writing or co-writing many songs for Toto and other artists. His career to present has seen hundreds of performances and album appearances with Toto and other famous musicians. Lukather suffers from tinnitus, which developed in the early 1980s. "Yes I have tinnitus, what a drag. I wear earplugs now 'cause of it. I found that it was all the years wearing headphones that did me in more than live playing. I used to have the real expensive plugs, but I found some 2 dollar ones that work just as good and you don't feel bad losing them... My hearing is damaged though. I always have to say "WHAT???", hahaha. Be careful guys, this could happen to you!"

Huff :(

yeah, it's disappointing, but hey! Try getting some noise canceling headphones; for half the volume, you can get the same sound as turning up your volume on the ear buds AND still filter out about 80% of outside noise (the other 20% is made of actions that occur directly around you and super loud noise, that's what i've gained from experience). A cheap pair from walmart costs 25-35 bucks plus batteries (usually AA or AAA).

And to meneldil, Mozart is quite relaxing. If you're into getting a relaxing, classical music experience, try making a "radio" at Pandora.com, it's a fun little site ;)

As of now, I turned the volume down, and the long ringing has stopped, so that's good!

Seriously, as an audio artist, the ears are great things to have. To hear the music you're making, it's definitely cool. When the music is too loud, (a hard thing to resist when hearing the next big music track), there's something called going deaf, and that's not fun. So when you're mixing and creating, and as overused as this statement is, keep the volume down until you need an idea of what you've got towards the end. Trust me, i'm not going deaf, but I can definitely say that having your ears ring for 10 minutes straight after mixing some of my audio is NOT fun, it sucks :P

Either that, or use something that we get from people like Mozart and Handel, MUSIC THEORY!!!

-I used to hate my songs too, but I started studying up on music theory, and it adds this different sound to music. By using music theory, it opens some door of opportunities and ideas that I would have never had before. If you know what music (normally, it is theory) does, then you can use it to create something pleasant and original.

Topic: Reason inside FL?

Posted: 01/29/08 10:00 PM

Forum: Audio

I can only answer one of your questions, "Is FL not as powerful as Reason?"

-This is an extremely debatable topic, considering some people use FL, others use Reason. In either case, you just have to know how to use the program to your needs. I really like FL because that's what I started with, and I have suspicions of how Reason could be more difficult to learn since I'm so used to FL. I also love FL because of it's simplicity to use and how I can jot down my ideas, and turn it into something with ease, all the while learning all the little mixing tricks that I need to create a high quality track.

-Reason users probably know more about Reason, I know next to nothing about it, but I'm sure that Reason can do the same, maybe more, than FL, I really don't know.

-I have no idea as to the mechanics of rewiring FL and Reason, but I'm sure if you do, it'll rock ;)

Very true G9. Something to somewhat counter that is the question of how someone reviews a person's song. For example, it's good to acknowledge mistakes and how to fix them, but always make sure that there isn't a personal attack to the artist him/herself. Criticize the song, not the performer (or maker, whichever).

If I said, "You really had a boring part of the song at 0:55, you need to fix it by doing this and that," then I'm being really critical of the person, and not the song by saying the artist did something bad, and that his/her interpretation of art within their song isn't "right."

But if I said, "The section at 0:45 was really pleasant, but at 0:55, the cool melody was repeated again, and so it made it redundant, much like a repeated sentence over and over again. Add a different groove that stems from the melody, but introduces something new," then I'm giving advice about the song, but not attacking the artist.

-Also, some people are jerks when you review them with criticism, so if that's the case, you just got to get over it, not much I can say about that.
