I really feel like the huge gap in my art is between the paper and photoshop. I can't sketch anything in photoshop like I can on paper, and I can't color on paper anything like what I can do in photoshop. So I'm going to try to focus really hard on my weaknesses in both areas, expect a lot of crappy digital sketches for a while, until I can sketch as well in photshop as I can on paper. And the same for some traditional coloring coming up. I've gotta grow more and become more consistent. Also I'm going to be hard cramming some refs, so expect to see the same pose several times, I want to post these to document my progress.

Hey, first thigns I notice that seem off is his pose, his anatomy, and lakc of depth. Like, it almost looks like the sword is going through his head, now don't get discouraged. The key to this is to just keep doing it. I did a little sketch to illustrate the depth issue, see how I faded the sword some, and tried to avoid creating any tangents with his body. Only a partial success but I hope it helps.

The most important thing I think you can do at this point in your art life, is to keep drawing. Draw hard, draw like three times a day. I didn't start drawings until I was 18 years old, I started WAY too effing late, so I set aside three hours a day to just draw and read/study art books and artists. It was awful sometimes, but I think it paid off and made me catch up with others my age, who had been drawing their entire life. And remember, even if you get into an art rut, you're not inspired or anything, draw anyway. Even in your sketchbook, just do some figure studies. It's always better to produce some bad drawings in private, than to produce no drawings at all. The human brain is a meat machine, it learns patterns form repitition, and then later can reproduce what it has learned. Just keep drawing what you enjoy, good luck. ^^

Alright, here I goze. First I'd like to ask if you used a photo ref for this? I'm getting a photo ref feel, doesn't matter either wasy, I'm just wondering. Second, I personally don't like the hard cyan on black, but I've seen others do it, so it might just be a taste thing. But the color choice to me is just hard to look at.

I think with this kind of art, you could really benifit from learnign out to use halo effects, this is when you outline a dark area, or add color behind an object that is totally obscurred in darkness. I'll try to illustrate an example for you.

Also the shadow on her cheek seems pretty unatural, I think it is the cyan color, she seems to BE the light source, so it's hard to understand how a shadow could be on her at all. Kinda makes me think of Cortana, she glowed and had now real dark areas on her form, you might scope her out and see how they handled light around her. Good luck!

Big picture.

The darkness and noir feel are intentional, and the b/w. Outside of some anatomy I'm not sure what detailed crits I could give you on this piece. And anatomy stuff just comes form study, so, good work! Haha, keep on drawing.

I often struggle with backgrounds. Any tips on that as well?

On the subject of backgrounds, I think the most important thing to do is learn to enjoy painting them as much or more than the foreground. A lot of people just want the bg done so they can move on, I personally enjoy painting the bg more in many cases. I think it's just somnething you've got to dive into and to not be afraid of. Learn about basic perspective, watch some bob ross, and just do it.

Haha, a strange one this, I don't know that I have much advice outside of just giving my opinion. First, real quick before I forget, you should scope out Terryl Whitlatch's art, she's pretty much the best animal artist I've ever seen, her and Peter D'Seve (spelling?) Both of them are effing amazing.

I think this is a Giraffe right? He almost looks to be bent into a G shape.

I might have added more texture, or some line, especially to hard the right angle you put into his form. Maybe lines like a draftsman drawing, I'll try to illustrate without destroying your great work.

The glowing light behind him almost gives it a 'dragon' like feel, to me anyway. Especially the head.

Hope if nothing else, this give you ideas or feedback you might find helpful, great work.

Hey, cool painting, I tried to reflect my thoughts on the color and the hea,d just as you asked.

I think the colors should be more brooding, darker, and should better convey that the central event is what we should be seeing. The horror of seeing our village destroyed. So I chose to make the character almost solid black, well more purple, but dark, so we see that he too it a witness, like us, but what we focus on is the town.

I made it night-time because that's darker, etc etc, and left a trail of water behind the beam, to show that it is moving. Also I included a few terrible drawings of heads, to show how I try to handle that angle. It really isn't easy, but I hope the cave drawings I did help some. I usually just try to keep it simple when drawing the head form a weird angle, seems the harder I work on it, the more obvious it is that I don't know what I'm doing.

Hope this helped, keep going!
