Response to: Why Flash? Posted September 10th, 2013 in Animation

Hi again Grub517. I have given your conversation a bit of thought and so now I am going to add to improve my previous post. I find you quite annoying but I am going to try and keep this as objective as I can manage.
I animate in Flash CS5, but I do not feel sentimental towards the program at all. I agree with you that Toonboom is a program that is better constructed towards animators and has a lot of features that flash doesn't. I am going to answer your question strait up and give my main reasons for buying flash.

- The first reason was because I got into animating when I was around 14 years old at school. The computers at my school had flash8 installed and so that is what I leaned on. Even as a beginner, flash's simple interface was easy to pick up. The next obvious step for me was buying a version of flash to use at home.
- The second reason was because I didn't know about any other animation programs. Adobe have built up strong credibility through their other products like photoshop and is well known. Perhaps even THE most well known animation software.
- Third reason. For a long time, Newgrounds supported SWFs as the preferred file type to upload.
- Fourth reason. This has been the biggest one for animators for a long time. Flash API adds can only run in SWF files. meaning that animators that need to pay bills can use the revenue from flash adds. I'm not sure what the situation is now, with updates to the website and other third party sites available.

You said this about flash:
"It's so encouraged and supported."
In the actual animation industry, flash is certainly NOT encouraged. You seem to not have looked in the right places. obviously flash is going to be encouraged by other flash users and beginners are going to be encouraged to uses flash because it is easy to learn the fundamentals of animation (unlike GoAnimate which is laughed at in the animation industry). Take a look at this article, I think you will love it! It's about how flash should not be encouraged.
http://www.animatorisland.com/editorial-if-you-use-adobe-flash-stop/
J.K. RIKI is an animator who I trust and respect immensely. So yeah, flash is not the ideal program to learn to animate on. Happy now?

I have given this some thought. Here is some advice for the next time you make a discussion on a forum. It's up to you if you want to ignore it.
This is not so much because of your opinion about flash vs toonboom. You have made some good points and maybe even convinced some people to buy toonboom. well done!

But a lot of people are finding you to be quite childish and arrogant. Many of the responses are by people that don't care that much about flash at all (Chongo for example). You are bringing a whole lot of attitude and bias into your responses which is pretty annoying. People are giving valid arguments and you are not even taking it on board because you seem to be too proud.

People will respect you a lot more if you approach a discussion humbly. I'm not saying kiss their ass or anything. But just don't come in thinking you've seen it all and done it all, because you won't learn anything new that way. As I have looked around and observed other artists for many years now, I have come to accept that there will always be someone better than you at your craft and there will always be someone worse than you. There's no use thumping your chest here unless you have a masterpiece of animation to back it up (in which case, do be proud of it). Seriously though people will respect you a lot more if you stop bragging all the time.

Here are examples of where you digress completely from the subject of the question (The capabilities of flash) to write in length about your qualities as an animator:
- "flash can't do what I can"- wow, that is a bold statement to make!
- "Properly designed characters, and almost flawless proportions (very consistent, and almost perfect). Better acting. Better drawing. More consideration." - Is that really needed? You could just say, "I've improved a lot. Look at this video as evidence"
- "My drawing ability has increased massively"- Cool story bro
- "You've got no idea what I've been through"- you have shown us what you have been through: making 12 seconds of rough animation!
- " I've shown consistent proportions, good drawings, a more appealing character, emotion, better acting, and things that wouldn't even come close to my previous work"- You really think that all of those qualities can't be achieved on flash? Most of those things like a more appealing character don't even involve the software?!
- " which is how I manage my proportions so well"- not really needed. We can judge your proportions just fine by watching your animations.
- " Unless "animators" on this website animate like I do, then they might not understand mostly where I'm coming from"- Maybe it's just how I read it and the way you put animators in speech marks but this sounds very big headed. There are animators on "This website" who are incredibly talented and experienced i'll have you know.

Examples of where you contradict your statements of being experienced in flash:

- "I've only known about flash for just over a year"- a year is not a long time compared to a lot of the animators you are talking to. Max-Vador evidently has a lot more experience than you.
- "This is all I've got to show". 12 seconds of rough animation is all that you could show us after all of that talk about how much improvement you had made?
- "The reason I showed this is because I have nothing else to show"- So where is all of your animating experience then? Did it get destroyed in a fire?
- "I've only been going seriously about animation for about a year"- You should stop praising yourself then. There are people reading who a lot more experienced than you.

If you want to tell the world about how great you are with animating, you should probably post it on a separate thread. Maybe give it a title like "Look at me and how much I have improved!". I'm not judging your animating ability at all. Even if my favorite animator came out with statements like this I would be annoyed at the arrogance. The only time I can think of where you should be writing about how well you can animate is if you are looking for employment. And that doesn't seem to be your aim. If anything it just comes across as a plea for attention.

Whoa, slow down there. Flash is a perfectly fine program. No it's not the best, but it's fine. Far more accessible for beginners than ToonBoom, Photoshop, and especially TVPaint.

You've been using the program for an entire year, and still can't figure out how to turn off object drawing; I'd say it's safe to say that the problem lies with you, rather than with Flash and its capabilities. This is a case of blaming the toaster for not working when you haven't plugged it in.

I'm with Dylan on this one. You seem to have an irrational hatred of flash. But the problem was your drawing ability and not knowing how to use flash properly. It sounds to me like you were using a mouse with no pressure sensitivity and have the smoothing settings wrong with object drawing toggled. No wonder you didn't think the brush was good.

I don't mind what your angry opinion is. The fact is that Harry Partridge is able to animate in flash and have a finished product that looks as pristine as this. Maybe you should ask him.

Originally, I was just gonna do lots of chores for my parents to get me to my goal. Well... I've been doing that for 3 months and I've earned just under a 1/5 of my goal. So, until I reach my goal, I am going to be taking paid commissions from you guys! If you have an idea, PM me and we can work out a price (and maybe an animation deadline as well. We can also discuss sound effects, and voices and all that jazz later. I have no specific price, but because I am not in any desperate need of money, it's save to say that you won't have to pay to much.
And, just a quick note, I am british, so if you could convert your currency in to pounds it would be greatly appreciated, but if not, I really don't mind.
Hope someone sees this!

Hey Bryn,
You should check out this site called Fiverr.com
It would be perfect for you to animate small commissions for people and make a bit of money. You can setup a gig for free and it means that transactions are reliable.

Response to: Animators & Artists Needed! Posted September 5th, 2013 in Animation

A word of warning, I get into a bit of a rant at the end. If you want constructive criticism, read it.

A lot of the mistakes you made in this post made me want to face palm. Ill try to explain why with minimal frustration.

Firsly, you should put this in to paragraphs next time. It makes it much easier to digest. It also stops 50% of people leaving the page without bothering to read what you have written.

Please.. it's fine if you take like an month to make 1 episode that's cool! but it's only cool if your taking that long to do it. not -yea yeah are do it in the next couple of days.... ahhh yeah I.. ahh have been busy ... sorry .. i'll do it next week.... ah sorry I'll finish it later yeah I don't think I can do it

Well if you are not paying the artists anything for their efforts and you are keeping all the creative rights, are you really in a position to tell the artist/ artists when they are allowed to have breaks or how much time they should be spending on the project? How are they going to be busting their asses on your animation if they have a full time job, or are in full time education or have bills to pay (very likely). Just something to think about.

have always wanted this to be an anime.. It doesn't have to be just like a real anime.
That's great. But an anime about what? Horror comedy romance drama thriller? At least give the creators a clue to what they might be dedicating months of their time working on, or else very few will apply.

In fact the episodes are only going to be 7 minutes long roughly
You want a 7 minute long episode to be produced in a month? By 1 or 2 animators, and all for free? Good luck with that =D

One last thing. You have to show that you are a good director. Otherwise why would a good animator come looking to team up with you. It doesn't seem like you have even started writing scripts yet (I could be wrong here). That is a huge gamble for an artist to take- teaming up with you. If you don't show any credibility or at least have a structured and well thought out pitch for artists to read then the only people that you will attract are a handful or naive new-comers and it will probably be their first time animating anything. I know this because I see it all the time on the forum. Heck, I've even been the kid signing up for them.

Sorry I go off on a rant. Honestly as someone who is passionate about making animations, I just want your project to do well and I don't want animators to make the same mistakes I did.

Introduce "User" search option? Posted September 1st, 2013 in General

What does everyone think of having an extra search option at the top or the page to search for Newgrounds-users/ artists by name?

There have been a number of times where I have tried looking for a person on Newgrounds and have had a lot of difficulty because of not knowing the exact name to put into the URL. Sometimes I can find them by using keywords in the audio or movie or game searches, but it is inconvenient. Having a search option for users could be very convenient.

It could display a list of users in order of search relevance, and could show the user's display picture next to the username and even the user Info (description of themselves).

I haven't offered this idea to the Newgrounds developers yet. I wanted to read people's thoughts first. I would be interested to find out if people would find this useful.

I am looking for multiple male voice actors to fill the remaining roles. I can only accept voice actors that use a good quality microphone (Blue snowball microphone or equivalent/higher). Voice actors also need to be a long term users who are going to stay around for a while for future episodes.

Here are the remaining available roles (Please specify which one you are going for in your audition, you are free to try out for as many characters as you want)

Character 1
-Description: young male, age 15. Medium/high voice pitch. Enthusiastic and excitable. Interested in his environment. American accent.
-Audition lines:
1- "Wow, this place is awesome! And there’s this buzz I’ve never felt before."
2- "Oh, sorry about that. I'm new to this place."
3- " Thank you so much! I've always wanted an upgrade this powerful."
4- " My god, are you OK?"

Character 2
-Description: Average middle aged male voice. Hint of being light hearted and thoughtful. Average American accent.
- Audition Lines:
1- " I guess I never really thought about it. You seem to be here all the time, I guess I just assumed you were doing something important."
2- "So what are you going to do?"
3- " Hmm, sounds interesting. But you should be careful."

Character 3

- Audition lines:
1- " Stop right there. Identify yourself at once"
2- " Well well well. What do we have here?"
3- " HA! Don't think you an escape the law that easily"
4- " You've got a lot of nerve, Kid"

METHOD OF CONTACT
Newgrounds pm is fine or an email to Howarddw@hotmail.co.uk
If you need any extra information on voice acting parts or information about the series in general, just ask!

DEADLINE
No strict deadline, but if you audition after October 1st, the chances are that the role will have already be taken. I will accept the first suitable voice actor that approaches me, so try to be as fast as possible.

CREDIT
You will receive credit for your participation. If you want a link to your profile that can be arranged.

ADDITIONAL NOTES
- I am a very friendly guy. Please don't be shy to audition, even if you are not sure if you would suit the role.
- This is a legitimate web series. I have spent the past year animating it and have the first episode completed. It has 4:30 run time and I am about 1/5th of the way through episode 2. It is high quality content, worth auditioning for.
- The characters are numbered in order of their screen time. Character 1 plays a large role, down to character 4 who plays a small role.
- I would prefer auditions to not be uploaded to the audio portal. Drop box is a good alternative.
- It is an anime drama. So all of the voices are somewhat realistic. None are over-the-top wacky.
- If you know of anyone that might be right for one of these parts, I would appreciate it if you let them know about this.

Thanks for reading!

Problem with disappearing symbols Posted April 8th, 2013 in Animation

Hi guys, I have an urgent problem that I need to solve.
I have been working on an animation in flash 8. Most of my stuff is FBF but I have been using some motion tween effects for things like slow motion.
The problem is that when I motion tween movie clip symbols, thy become invisible as if nothing is there, but are present on the key frames. This is not just a problem when I export it to SWF but also in flash 8 itself. I have a preloader at the start of the animation which I thought would have prevented this.
Also, I can temporarily fix it by clicking into the symbol and scrubbing through the timeline.

Can anyone offer a reason for why this is happening or a way to prevent it from happening?
Thanks

and that will be divided differently.
So one of you gets paid more than $40? Ok!

Before Adam makes a decision, he asks all of the active members of NATA what they think about it. Every decision is completely transparent so why are you trying to demonise him?

Even so, $40 isn't much payment to have someone spend hours sitting through 32+ entries, scoring them and leaving comments for them over the course of several months. It's a dedication and I wouldn't say that $40 is a lot to warrant for that.
I'm really dumbstruck by how someone expects to get paid for something that is the sole reason for people visiting this site - the expectation of being entertained by some great movies.

They are considered the elite among animators and entertainers. We value their opinions and feedback and respect that their time is valuable.

You're earning additional money off of merch sales as well, so asking for a sizeable percentage from the funding is cheeky.

You're probably an ignorant teenager who has never had any responsibilities in his life, but adults have bills to pay and need food to put on the table. They can't do that if they spend year upon year organising free to enter tournaments with 0 profit. He is not being cheeky at all. Many kick starters you will come across will involve the donations paying for expenses because the developers can not afford to live without a regular earning. Time is one of the largest expenses.

If you dont like the way the money is being distributed, you can just not donate and not participate like a sad loser.

NG Iphone app? Posted February 3rd, 2013 in Where is / How to?

Hi! Im not an expert in this subject, but wouldn't it be possible to make a Newgrounds Iphone app for animations now that SWF can be easily converted to the suitable movie format?
It could be a separate "Iphone animations" portal all together, or maybe the app could filter submissions based on if their format would work on the Iphone.
Could this be a good way to promote Newgrounds and could it be beneficial for content creators? Sorry if this topic has already been discussed.
Just an idea...

I tried reaching the frontpage on NG before with few of my submission, but I have to admit that other toons, while took me alot of time and effort to complete, didn't get more than a few thousand (or even only hundreds) of views.

Recently I am having alot of neat ideas about making a toon (or even a series) about Diablo3 ingame jokes, but the thought of having done all the work and not even reaching the frontpage kills the motivation completely. Last time I didn't succeed reaching frontpage with a submission that IMO at least deserved 1 day on the frontpage, it felt like a completely waste of my time and energy, and I started to wonder if the theme of my animations were way too niche. (it was about the game Heroes of Newerth)

So I am curious. People who reach frontpage with animations that don't last more than 1 minute (and don't even have a superb quality to them) - is it because they know the admins of this site IRL who let them get the frontpage slots? I know there are alot of animation that certainly DO deserve the frontpage, but I have also seen alot of shitty "toons" where I thought "how the fuck did it even get to frontpage in the first place".

So any thoughts on this one?

If you are making a game parody and not getting at least in the top 5, then you MUST be doing something wrong. Unfortunately people just love clicking on stuff they are familiar with. I once made a stupid Meme parody. It was a complete pile of shit, and yet it got daily first. Anyway I realised that It's a waste of time making what countless other people have made before you so from then on I only made stuff from my own original ideas. To this day I get far less views and don't really have any followers. But It's better this way.
I know that there are animators who see newgrounds as a source of income and not a hobby. I think that it is right for them to provide mainstream stuff. It's safe and reliable so they can pay the bills.
But dont think that by being original no one will take notice. Do your best and your tallent will shine through.

beginner animators and artists do seem to have the problem of drawing things face on. Its true. Maybe what you mean is that there should be varied directions when drawing characters.

Pic: Something I am working on in spare time.
Well Ash's head is straight on and his body isn't.

Also you should be able to draw your character looking in any direction, don't be silly now.
OMG noob stfu

Mate the only one acting buthurt here is you.

His head is like that because he is looking straight forward but his eyes aren't (to create a suspicious look)

You could also make the suspicious look by squinting the eyes or making him look out to the sides of his vision without moving his head.
Correct me if Im wrong, but it looks like you traced the hell out of the two characters faces. It looks like that because of the smoothnes of the lines compared to the rest of the bodies and also that the heads dont quite match up to the bodies. But hey, im no expert.

Plus, I never said you can't make him change direction. When creating character models it is a good place to start. (examples = family guy, american dad, ANY anime.)

In the screen industry I learnt it is important to always have your characters facing away from the camera. It creates a sense of watching something. The worst mistake made is when you look directly or your character looks directly a the camera.

I think your right. But what if the character is interracting with the camera, or it is showing someone elses point of view? Artists when doing character design often start their first drawing with the front view, then the side view then the diagonal view. The thread says character design.

Rubber Panda, I am not at an adequate level to teach you how to design characters, but someone that helps me to learn a lot about character design and generally making character sketches look great is Mark Crilley. I know its not exactly the style that you are going for but I think it could benefit you. He makes consistent good quality videos. http://www.youtube.com/user/markcrilley

Ninjas! its all about the ninjas.

I would like to discuss minecraft parodies. Theyre getting super super lame and yet there is at least 5 I count being posted on newgrounds every week. They always seem to have the same unoriginal content typically a new player collecting resources making a house and getting attacked by the various monsters in the game. I know there are many exceptions to this. Minecraft TNA and Rubberninja's derpcraft (which I think started the whole thing off). How long is this phase going to last? I think that this can also be applied to Skyrim parodies- they started off to be epic with Harry partridge but then to many animators seemed to jump onto the band waggon. I can empathise with animators that it is hard to find original content. Sorry for this rant I just wanted to get it off my chest. Feeling better now.

Response to: Why capitalism won't work post 2030 Posted May 22nd, 2012 in Politics

I am more in favour of socialism than capitalism for many reasons
but i think that both systems have their flaws. When changing from capitalist culture to socialist culture it would cause huge social turmoil. For example the ruling class will struggle to hold on to their accumulated wealth and inherited status, and workers are likely to become lazy through not having a financial incentive and the realisation that they can do hardly any work and get the same rewards as anyone else. (these ideas are all debatable)
As for this idea that machinery or technology will replace all jobs. I think that for many jobs you need human qualities. Robot can not do everything a human can and I doubt if they ever will. I think that the answer to there being job redundancies and thousands of other problems is very simple. Reduce the global population. This can be done through awareness campaigns, contraception, abortion, women's rights in certain countries which have not reached that stage (Saudi Arabia bin a example). Im studying Sociology at Alevel so I found this thread quite interesting.

Man this is fantastic! Hmmm.... Do you have the rights to use that song though? Its very important we don't use any copywritten material without consent from the owner due to legal issues. However, with yours, I believe you can just submit a version that doesn't have the music/has different royalty free music for the actual tournament. I want this in the Open Round, so what do you think NATA? Also, Lankie, I laughed my butt off to yours!

Thanks Dave! I could not find any coppyright notice regarding the music, but I emailed their contact just in case. I dont think I am getting through to them because they still havent replied. I would like to keep the music in but if I have to I am guessing I can make a no-sound version for munchy media?
