Well, this thread effectively got shot in the face... so here's another submission of mine...

The Demented Coloring Book Posted July 16th, 2010 in Art

I had this idea really... I've always thought line-art was interesting to try. So I decided that I'm going to make a thread for any kind of colorable line'art. It can be digital or traditionally done (though I just use pencil and pen). I know I haven't been on in a while, and I apologize for my absence, but I hope you enjoy posting and coloring these. I encourage others to print out, and color in any of the submissions they like and post them up.

While I don't require that the submissions be overbearingly scary or freakish, I would like to see at least a majority moderately scary. Here's an example I drew (sort of like my submission "Grave Robber"). Hope everyone likes it. :J

This is still a WIP, as I am yet to draw in the face and 'attempt' shading, but here it is so far.

1 hours work:

It's alright, but it needs improving.

What I think you should do (I can't exactly tell whether you did or not...) is do a really quick sketch (lightly, so you can erase) and define it to make it proportional if you mess up. Then you keep refining etc until it looks like a lightly drawin outline of a person. Then you take, for example, the head and put lines where the eyes line up, the middle of the face, and so on. then seperate the distance of the eye line to the chin by two lines, one for the nose, and one for the mouth.

A lot of anatomical study goes into my work on people so I can only assume that it would help if you looked at skeletons and things, maybe use the wrinkles on your clothes as reference.

That's definently good enough for the art portal, so is the moon. That guys art is awesome, so is this. The simplistic detail and the way you shade with pencils works really good.

Thanks :J

Honestly, this one's really good. Proportion's not realistic, but it's aesthetic and relatively proportional. Nice work :D

<manga> Reminds me of the moon from Soul Eater, mixed with the art style from D. Gray Man. </manga>
It's pretty cool. How exactly did you get so good with shading? Any tips?

I honestly incorporated the Soul Eater moon thing subconsciously while thinking about JTHM and listening to Marilyn Manson xD

But yeah, some good tips:
1. Be slow, careful, and precise
2. Be careful that you don't smudge the paper (check your hands for graphite every so often)
3. Try to have a general direction with your lines when shading (well it's more of my own style, but I like it)
4. REFERENCES! REFERENCES! REFERENCES!........... REFERENCES!
5. You gotta be crazy liek a coconut.
6. As for getting good at a sense of realistic shading, remember to constantly reference where your light source is facing. Try and get a feel for where the darks and lights are in relation to what parts of the drawing are in direct light, partial light, etc.
7. Listening to music that has to do with what your drawing, or is incoherent to the point of being ironically inspiring is sometimes very helpful (like listening to "Insane in the Membrane" while drawing an obscenely detailed fat guy in overalls with a duck mask and a giant butchers kni- I'll just shut up know...).

Oh, and I edited this version in Photoshop to make the background darker, you like it?

Tell me what you think or if anythings wrong. (eg the perspective in the legs.

There's one shadow of to the right that makes no sense actually. Anyway, The legs seem a bit outspread and blocky, not normally curved like a girls legs. If you want to get the perspective right try making a predrawing for them (I.e. a sort of a skeleton wire-frame really lightly drawn). The eyes seem really big too... Remember that they shouldn't reach the bottom of the nose (ever x0... well unless you WANT it to look like that... :/). The braid looks too big for the hair as well, try to use proportion and references if you're not sure, it'll help you draw better in the future. Anyway, it's still good, and I think you did the arms well, so keep it up.

Here's a random commission I did for someone on Gaia:
