Yes
A simple formula for approximating a person's basal metabolic rate is to multiply their weight in pounds by 10 if it is a woman and by 11 if it is a man. So, the basal metabolic rate for a 300 pound man would be approximately 3300 calories per day. A person's BMR is the smallest amount of calories a person needs to perform basic functions through the day such as sleeping and breathing. Almost everyone does more than just sleeping and breathing. Fat people burn more calories in terms of quantity while doing physical activity than their lean counterparts. A 300 pound man could easily burn almost 1000 calories while doing continuous physical activity for just an hour. Anyway, to sum it all up, -Aztec- was correct. Large people often really do consume that much, and a reduction in calories would cause them to lose weight.
