It's an interesting idea. I think if you made users able to add friends to their site, it might might help give exposure to their friends in an artistic sense.

I think that what a lot of people hate about Myspace friend lists is that a lot of people only seem to care about acquiring as many friends as possible --maybe for bragging rights or something. Newgrounds artists would probably use this to spread the word about their own work... They'd at least have a legitimate purpose for acquiring lots of friends. I can't really say whether it would be a good thing or a bad thing or whether it would be shallow or not.... I'd definitely try to use something like that to my advantage. You'd probably have a little from column A and a little from column B.

Topic: Torture game and $100. 2 of 20

Forum: NG News

I personally don't find the game all that fun, but I'd be interested in learning who the game was made for. When the creator submitted it, he selected certain criteria that would allow Newgrounds to put an appropriate rating on it. That's how it's done when you submit to Newgrounds. You select the indicators marked " violence," "explicit violence," "sexual content," and/or "explicit content." I don't remember if those are the exact terms used on the Newgrounds submission page or not, but anyone who has ever submitted to Newgrounds knows that you classify your submission with any of those indicators that apply.

Anyway, my point is, that the Newgrounds rating was something like "Mature: Excessive Violence." The "Mature" label, applied based on the criteria selected by the author, clearly means that it isn't for children. That much is obvious. When Fox news presented their report, they described the game this way, "It puts your child in the driver's seat to torture a make believe hanging person..." At the bottom of the screen, there was some text that read, "Let's kids torture human figures" The Fox report appeared to be misrepresenting the game as a submission deliberately made for kids. They had a commentator on talking about the effects it has on kids.

But it obviously wasn't for kids, because the label at the top of the screen said "Mature: Excessive Violence."

I don't know about you, but if I was the creator of that game, I'd sue the shit out of Fox News for slander, especially if I put a mature label on it everywhere I submitted it. Seriously, if the guy made this for a mature audience, he doesn't need Fox telling the world that he designed it for children. I believe that's called slander. Sue 'em.

Somebody should make some drums tracks and then give it to some random bassist. Then that bassist should give it to some random guitarist. Then that guitarist could give it to either a lead guitarist or rhythm guitarist, depending on who he is. Or if one guitar is enough, he could give it to a random vocalist/lyricist... We could have a couple of different groups do this and then vote on the best one...

What do you guys think?

I'm trying to export my animations to .avi format, but every time I do, the movie clips don't work and the sounds inside them don't work. Is there a way I can make them work or dump their contents onto the main timeline? The stuff on the main timeline seems to play fine...

When I export to .mov files with Flash 5, Youtube doesn't accept my files.

Are .AVI files Realplayer files? Realplayer files are an option, but when I choose it, it says that I have to reinstall, but I'm pretty sure I've tried that and was unable to make it happen.

I used the basic code that came ready-made.

Are they supposed to work?

I was making a preloader, and I tried to put a button inside a movieclip. When I selected "control," then "Test movie," it didn't work at all, but when I selected "enable simple buttons" and played the animation with the "enter" key, it worked that way. I need it to work in the finished version though.

Topic: Madness Day 2007 Winners!

Posted: 09/24/07 10:39 PM

Forum: NG News

Some of these were pretty cool. It's kind of overwhelming to see all the neat tricks that people pulled out of their sleeves for this contest. The episode that won, "Madness: Deus Ex Machina..." I know I sound kind of petty for saying something negative about the winner, but the fighting and action in that one weren't very interesting... It was almost like watching someone playing a video game, --more so than the original Madness-- but man was it beautifully made. All the lighting and effects... Holy crap. It was cool how the characters looked all silvery. The artwork was amazing.

I personally think "Madness Manufactory" should've got first. All that 3D stuff at the end was great. Even the lighting effects were cool. Like I said, seeing all the special effects is pretty overwhelming. Kind of makes me want to save up my money and get a version of flash that's better than Flash 5.

But I did learn a few things just from dissecting the preloader... I wish I could dissect some of the submissions.

Oh wait... That's not true... But what's wrong with getting money for doing a job that you love? Or getting money to pay artists to do what they love? That's win/win for everyone. Artists are sure to put more time and effort into their work if they're doing it full time, instead of working another job that they might not even like at all and then only getting to work on Flash in the few hours a week that they have to spare.

And besides, I think you're only a sell out if you compromise your personal beliefs for money. Newgrounds, from my perspective, has never tried to control the content of its artists.

Tom is a pretty cool guy. Under normal circumstances, I'd probably be all narrow-minded and grumpy about advertisements, because companies are always trying to shove them down your throat. But apparently these ads help sponsor artists. That's pretty cool. I wonder if they have anybody in mind... I wonder how you get on the sponsorship candidate list...

Well just so you know, using graphics with the animation inside rather than a movie clip will probably suit you better, if you're making an animation. Graphics do not have to be static images, there are benefits to using graphics with animation inside them than movie clips. you should only need to use movie clips if you want actionscript on or in it, or want to use filters.

Graphics for animation > movie clips for animation.

I usually do use actionscript in my movieclips. Usually it's something simple like "()stop" at the end to keep them from looping. Anyway... You said graphics are better and that you should only use movieclips when you have actionscript inside, but you didn't say what the benefits are... Is it just that they don't take up as much space?

So I guess my question still stands... If I'm putting a looped animation inside a "graphic" --now-- should each frame of the animation also be converted to a graphic? Or does the fact that the frames are all in "something," whether it's a graphic or a movieclip, make that unnecessary?

Well, generally movieclips are just smaller animations that are encapsulated into a packaging called a "movieclip." I'm pretty certain that you can't turn a movieclip into a graphic, because graphics usually consist of one image. Movieclips usually are made up of more than one image. So you can have a moveclip made up of graphics, but you can't make a graphic out of movieclips. That's kind of like saying "can I make a brick out of brick walls?"

I just want to know if making each of the frames in a movieclip into graphics causes the entire flash to be better optimized.

I have a question about optimization... In the Blamformers collaboration page, Tom Fulp said something about how you should turn every image that will appear more than once into a graphic. What if you make a frame by frame movieclip loop? Should you turn every frame in the movieclip loop into a graphic? Or is the fact that it's saved as a movieclip good enough?

Just curious...

I started working on my song pretty late in the game. It's pretty rough right now. Hopefully I'll get a chance to polish it up a little and make it loop a little more smoothly. Also, since this is my first music portal submission, I have to wait for a moderator to approve it... Hopefully that won't cause me to miss the deadline...

the end of my part got cut too for some reason. weird.

I noticed that in the second one I did, Optimus Prime was supposed to say, "Megatroon! You asshole! That's my wife!" But they cut out the word "asshole." I guess it must've been to save space, because there were much more raunchy cartoons than mine....

Also, in my basketball one, some of the coloring was screwed up... Prime's leg panels turned black when the basketball went by. Must've been a result of that CTRL ALT SHIFT C thing that smoothes out the edges. I've noticed that when you do that, sometimes it messes up the colors a little.

Oh noes, a stalker!
(He's just whiney cos I quit his sonic collab long ago ;D)
Just bear in mind, folks, that tweens aren't neccessarilly the scurge of flash. It's one of the freaking tools that comes with it. And since Tom's sticking potentially 40 of these things in, it also saves file space. And there are awesome tween movies out there (Arfenhouse 6 for example.)

So yeah Tom, sounds like it should be awesome. Maybe you should consider a little something extra on top of those (tbh) emo sounding albums, ey? *hint hint* (despite my low chances of getting anything anyway)

Yeah... I think that even Adam Phillips tweens... He's primarily a frame by frame guy, but if, you look closely, it seems as if he draws very few new frames. It looks as if the squash and stretch technique is all tweened. I'm not certain, but I think Dan Paladin uses similar methods.

I've found that tweening is very hard to do without, even if you try to be a frame by frame purist.
