Response to: [beta Test] Iwbtg Posted April 11th, 2012 in Collaboration

Not quite sure if you're trying to steal it or not...

Label your production as a fan game or a tribute and I think you'll be alright, but please give credit where it's due. IWBTG is an amazing game in it's own right, so you should point people in that direction. Provide links to the original somewhere or something; otherwise you're stealing the art and (some) of the music from the original (which used music from other games, but that's beside the point).

People do fan works based off of this game all the time. Label it as such and give credit to the original and you'll face less hostility against it.

Response to: Does anyone know of any GED prep? Posted March 29th, 2012 in General

Learn the shit out of word problems; know basic arithmetic, fractions and decimals; memorize basic geometry functions such as the properties of parallel lines, angles, triangles, squares and circles; learn rudimentary algebra, up to and including the FOIL technique; learn the shit out of word problems. If you know these things then you'll be just fine during the test. Well, the math part of the test.

I'm not absolutely sure, but I think the exam may have started to mandate basic Trigonometry into the exam as well, as of 2012, so you might want to go over SOH-CAH-TOA (SineOppositeHypotonuse-CosineAdjacentHypotonuse-TangentOppo siteAdjacent) and it's applications as well (basically, right triangle trigonometry). I don't expect it to delve too much further than that, on the GED, but it wasn't standard until after I left as a teacher so I wouldn't know.

This is coming from someone who taught GED mathematics, so I hope that helps.

The Crimson Echoes 98% Alpha was actually leaked some time ago (the version that is played through in the video), so if you look hard enough you can find it. I'd post a link to it myself, but I don't think the moderators would be too happy if I went around linking to illegal material.

But yeah, it's pretty fun - it's pretty much exactly what that linked article said on what a sequel to Chrono Trigger should be.

Nothing has changed. It is merely that we hide now which what we had once openly expressed as children. All that selfishness, all that immaturity, the insensibleness, what happened to those? Nothing. They still reside inside you, but deeper inside you, caked under years of social forming and etiquette.

No, actually there's a physical difference in the brain which restricts a child from critical thought until adolescence (the actual age the child reaches that point ranges from 12-14 years old). That is, until a child hits that age, they cannot physically think outside whatever established rules for themselves until after some point when they become a teenager.

Why 18? Dunno - that number IS artificial. The human mind has all it's own barriers removed after they're capable of critical thought, and the physical body doesn't stop growing and changing until the age 25. The stuff you're talking about is nonsense, though, since children are literally incapable of using their brain in the same manner as an adult does.

Response to: Getting bullied by chicks... Posted March 26th, 2012 in General

Okay, so the girls are picking on you and your friends and you won't bring it to the attention of your superiors because... they'll pick on you and your friends? Hopefully you can see the flaw in your logic, here.

Rat their asses out. It's not going to make your life any easier, no - but it'll make their life harder. Don't back down and eventually they'll get the point. Worst case scenario is that they continue bugging you and your friends, but there's nothing stopping that now; at least you'll have the satisfaction of making their lives harder, in return.

Unlike male bullies they're not going to take you aside and curb you for being a snitch, and unlike male bullies, you have a perfectly dignified excuse for not decking them in the face and taking care of it yourself - it's not really acceptable to anyone to resort to striking a woman, in any circumstance. There's little to no social harm in getting your superiors involved. You will probably continue to be harassed, but fuck it, they're doing that anyway, so there's nothing to lose on your end.

As for their cousins, straight up ignore threats made by the girls about them (if they're making threats with them) and follow through anyway, as they are empty threats. There aren't too many people that would risk (no, guarantee) jail time for avenging the act of getting the women in question in a detention or two - while they might believe that their family would avenge such a heinous act (seeing that they're the self centered bitches they are, I'm sure they do), no person would commit a felony by attacking you for the sake of avenging an inconvenience for them. If their cousins are among the rare few morons that would do such a thing (and not already have landed their asses in jail for it) then get the police involved - that shit's not a school issue anymore and you have the right to get the law involved.

tl;dr, get the faculty involved and ignore their cousins, since the worst that could happen is currently the status quo and their family won't risk a prison sentence for something as menial as those three getting detention.

Oh yeah, if they go outside of school to pick on you and/or your friends you can actually threaten to call the cops on them for harassment. Though they're too young to receive a felony for it (for 1st degree aggravated harassment, anyway - picking on the foreigner and the disabled person is a form of this), I suspect they could get into serious trouble nonetheless if the law got involved.

Don't believe it's a large enough offense to get the law involved? Here's some legal stuffs to back me up on it.

http://definitions.uslegal.com/h/harassment/

I don't think it applies when they're in school, though, since the responsibility then lies on the teachers. Good luck with your problems; whether or not you take my advice, I hope the issue gets resolved.

Response to: Cheney's Heart Posted March 25th, 2012 in Politics

Oh yeah, forgot to mention - when an individual dies, generally there's only about a five minute window to remove the heart and preserve it. Otherwise, due to the lack of fresh blood with oxygen the heart dies, as well, rendering it useless to anybody. This is what happens to most people's hearts. On top of that, not everyone is a donor, so even if doctors were in the rare situation where a heart was available for removal they may not be able to remove it, due to legal concerns. That is why it's as scarce a commodity as it is.

Response to: Cheney's Heart Posted March 25th, 2012 in Politics

It's a basic issue of scarcity economics - there are not enough hearts to go around, so not everyone will get what they need, even though it's a life-or-death issue. There's nothing that can be done about that, right now, so we need to figure out how to distribute what is available to people.

I personally see no issue with the rich being the people taking priority, in this case, simply because I do not see any argument against it that isn't an appeal to the poor. No, the rich are not better people than the poor, but neither are the poor better than the rich; if money isn't used to determine where a scarce resource is to go then what should be used instead?

But other people are able to change those tags, right?

Yeah, and pretty easily, too. It's not a very good way to verify your stuff, but thieves can forget to change these things when they steal other people's music, at times. It's better to either have a dated copy of the original or a beta of the source - a thief can't physically reproduce these things.

Response to: This kind of side-chain? Posted March 24th, 2012 in Audio

At 3/24/12 05:02 PM, TR0KY wrote: I am sorry to ask this here but you guys made my curious, what is a side chain?

Side chaining is a technique where you run a synth/sample through a compressor, where it only activates the compression when another instrument (like, say, a bass drum) activates compressor (that connection is called a 'side chain'). Different compressors function slightly differently, I suspect, but the principle is the same all around. You can make the effect as pronounced or subtle as you need it to be - sometimes you just want to leave more room for the bass, so the chaining can be almost unnoticeable, while other times you're looking for more of a dance effect, in which case the chaining will sound like the second video where the music almost cuts out completely when the drums strike.

Response to: This kind of side-chain? Posted March 24th, 2012 in Audio

Derp, that is, the first example sounds like gating - the second example just sounds like side chaining with a low threshold & high compression ratio (8:1 or higher). Two different sounds and effects completely - which one do you want to go for?

Sorry for the double post, here.

Response to: This kind of side-chain? Posted March 24th, 2012 in Audio

That doesn't sound like side chaining at all. That sounds like gating. Side chaining would have residual sound as the source sound died out, whereas this cuts in and out. I would just get that effect manually by muting the mixer channels at the desired intervals. I'm sure there's a 'better' way, but I never found it that hard to do it manually.

Response to: Mastering - your mastering. Posted March 24th, 2012 in Audio

When I master a series of tracks I essentially work them all to a point where all the levels are clean and easy to hear before getting to my master EQ, Stereo width & limiting, then I do my best to get everything to sound as loud as can be while retaining the same EQ throughout without noticeable clipping in any of the tracks. That's for album mastering, though.

As for track mastering, I tend to work with all of my limiters, stereo width, EQ, etc. running as I estimate they'll be set on the finished product (there's always a little variance by the end, though), then write the track as clean as possible. Then after it's all laid out I turn off all the mastering and go through every single mixer board and channel, making sure there isn't any clipping at all among any element (from the input to effects added to the mixer boards themselves). The entire track at this point will be a bit quiet when that's finished, so from here I adjust the mastering limiters and EQ to get as much volume as possible without compromising the clean quality. It's tedious, but it makes for a crystal clear finish for a track without losing volume.

I hope that helps.

Most software does that. I know for a fact you can put your info in the id3 tags using Audacity, Finale and Cakewalk. Never actually done it in Ableton, Reason or FL Studio, but I doubt they'd leave that out.

I can't speak for Ableton of FL Studio, but Reason doesn't export Mp3 files - only WAVs. You'd need to run any file through Audacity (or another audio program that creates Mp3 files), anyway, so Reason users can (and always should) ID their tracks that way.

Oh wow, Magix is only 30$?

To be perfectly honest, I never liked their Music Maker program (namely because I could never get it to work), but I found their MIDI maker to actually be an incredibly efficient and effective tool. There's probably a bunch of those for free on the internet, now, but back when I got the program (MMM5, lawl) it was the shit (also, I don't believe they had any claim on MIDIs produced on that product). But yeah, all that aside, Magix loops are virtually unusable, so I doubt you'd get much use out of the program unless you want a really neat MIDI creator (but you can get those for free online, so that'd be a bit of a waste).

Response to: Consistent Sound Levels? Posted March 14th, 2012 in Audio

Hmm, well you could run the tracks in question through Audacity and either lower the volumes of the loud tracks so they're equal to the quieter tracks or use a limiter of sorts to raise the volume of the quiet tracks (I recommend the former method, myself), then adjust the volume of your output accordingly. It's a pain, but I don't think there's any way to do this automatically.

You can get individual downloads if you explore the homepages for most of the albums. The torrents are faster, but if you're not into that you can still get the music via zip or individual tracks (like this page from the WA album - http://armed.ocremix.org/download.php).

Dr. Drum, baby! Posted March 11th, 2012 in Audio

http://www.drdrum.com/
http://www.drdrum.com/images/comparison-chart.jpg

Yes, it quite possibly has the funniest advertisement campaign for a music program ever, but aside from that it does seem to potentially have some fairly decent options for a 40$ DAW (it's not going to be Reason, FL10, Cubase or anything). Even then, though, I don't have the money to fork for that, and I'm curious to see if this is at all a viable sequencer. Is there anyone willing to take a look at this thing? At worst, it looks like a drum sample pack with some decent sounds - and hey, it might actually be viable on some grounds.

On a different note, it looks like it's set up with plenty of loops and preset 'beats' (and possibly have a license like Magix, in which case none of the music coming from that program would be valid for NG), so it might be something for the NG moderators to be aware of at least for the sake of heading off presets that come from this program. If not to see if this could be a good novice program, one of the audio mods might want to give it a whirl and get an idea of how it impacts NG.
