Response to: Tablet vs. Laptop Posted June 23rd, 2012 in General

Personally, I'm not sure I could get much use out of a tablet, particularly because I use a laptop for my audio design, CAD design and word processing... design. As of late, gaming on it has been more secondary, and my internet usage on it, while frequent, could easily be covered by my smartphone, if push came to shove.

The issues that I have with the current pad generation is that it simply doesn't have the software that I need that isn't covered elsewhere (and more effectively) by another device. That is not, however, a fault of the device itself, but more of a fault of designers for not creating useful software that takes advantage of the unique properties of a tablet. Having a touchscreen is an obvious difference that could have some real utility advantage over a laptop, and the size of the screen does increase the amount of functionality that one could have over a smartphone (more space = more options and/or more detailed and rich design).

I'm not an expert on tablet software, but from the few experiences that I've had with it the device seems to try to emulate other software that is more efficiently used on other hardware rather than trying to create useful software that utilizes it's unique advantages. If, say, Reason (my Digital Audio Workstation) had a version of itself that was designed for an ipad by, say, using one's touch to move connections from one point to another more intuitively than in the original program, could used an input system that incorporated a pad "MIDI keyboard" with the proper sliders and modulators for live input, had easy input and editing options that one would normally use a mouse for, etc., then I'd start making my ipad investments, since that's something that would really speed up my music writing process, and I'd really be able to do it anywhere (Laptops, while portable, are not nearly as versatile when it comes to portability). More software like that for the ipad and people would be singing a different tune about it, but as it stands it doesn't seem like there are developers trying to take advantage of the format, as of yet.

Response to: Ng Music Suggestions: Finished! Posted June 21st, 2012 in General

Woa, is this a loophole to the Audio Forum's 'Don't advertise your music' rule - posting one's music in General, instead? Awesome.

Eh, the saxophone playing was alright, I guess. It would be nicer if the playing was a little smoother and less disjointed, but it sounds like you're still starting out on it so I suppose it'll come in time. Keep practicing, man.

Response to: Ways to improve the Audio Portal? Posted June 21st, 2012 in Audio

Some good ideas in here, so far. A couple more that haven't been mentioned yet (or simply need to be emphasized, imho):

1. Delete buttons on one's own music is a good thing. Even if it's back to the old system where one cannot delete music that has been hosted on a movie or has over a certain amount of views, it would still be a move in the right direction.

2. Be able to see who has voted you with a "0" or "1", within the past week, at least. Remove anonymity from the function and people will think twice about employing it.

3. Only give people the ability to vote on a single track of music once. That limits the power that self-voting has, and also will limit the rouge zero-bomber that might have a vendetta against your music (though if a group of trolls are attacking then you're still SOL).

4. For the love of God, please give experience to Audio reviewers/voters. More people will vote on music if they could get experience from it. I know this is a flash site community, but I think the Audio portal is large enough where people who only want to focus their time voting on that material instead should have their votes given more weight over time - it just doesn't make any sense for the experience and level that's achieved from flash voting to affect audio votes, while audio voting has no affect on future audio votes. It has stopped me (and others, I'm sure) entirely from voting, as it feels fruitless and futile.

5. If there was an alert that would ping for the Audio mods if someone votes a string of "0"s or "5"s in a short period of time (say, 30 of either in a week), that might help bring attention to users that could be causing trouble. Then again, it'll likely also increase the workload of the Audio mods, too, which would be a pain. Still, both people that vote pure "0"s and pure "5"s deflate and inflate the system - it would be best for the community if their influence was monitored and, if troublesome, cut entirely.

6. An easy way to see which songs have new reviews, and a convenient page where you can not only see your score, view count and downloads, but also the change in these things since your last visit. It's nice to be able to see not only how much traffic and attention your track has gotten overall, but also how much it has gotten since you've last checked.

Those are my thoughts - I hope that some consideration for them will be taken, as I'd like to see this portal thrive once again.

Response to: Christian or Agnostic? Posted May 31st, 2012 in Politics

Erm, actually I also am curious why this is in the Politics forum and not somewhere like General? If there was a discussion about religion then it would certainly have a place here, but simply stating one's beliefs isn't a good way to produce a meaningful dialogue. Eh, not my call - if no one else cares then who am I to ruin it.

Catholic. That sect of Christianity makes the most sense theologically & philosophically, even if many of it's members and clergy don't seem to. They're also one of a few that are not stuck on Sola Scriptura and acknowledge evolution as the way the world formed.

Also, the current Pope looks like the Emperor from Star Wars, which is kind of awesome.

Response to: The American News Media refuses... Posted May 31st, 2012 in Politics

The Church is suing America on this issue? Huh, I wish them luck on it, though I think as it stands America is in the right on it. Kind of wish they spent my tithes investing in more productive endeavors, but whatever.

As for the Catholic vote, don't worry about it. The Catholic Church, while it does have some influence (as do the leaders of any religion), it's not as significant as you'd think. As it stands, the Church is telling parishioners to do the same thing as they told us the last election: boycott Obama. Seeing that Obama is currently our president, I don't think it had the catastrophic effects that I've heard implied in this thread; at best, it's simply a reinforcement of the status quo.

He's not suing the person for 'trolling'. He's suing the person for harassment and illegally distributing private information about someone (which is a form of identity theft, I believe). That's illegal in most countries, which should be easy to see when worded like that. I hope the Australian gets proper compensation for the actions against him (I don't think he can just say 'bankrupt the prick lol', but jail time is plausible), and I hope the private information that was posted doesn't allow people to harm him later using it.

Response to: Woman fired for distraction figure Posted May 23rd, 2012 in General

Despite her rather average looks (she's not 'hot', but she's not THAT bad looking) and bitchy demeanor, if her company had no dress code and she dressed in the dresses shown in the video then in all honesty she has every right to sue the company for how they treated her. She's pretty clearly in the right, in this case - it's not like she was walking in with nothing but a bra and stockings. For all intents and purposes she was actually dressed pretty modestly.

From what I can tell, the only reason people are bringing up the religious standings of the store owners is because the store owners brought it up against the woman. They brought it up, so people have the right to call bullshit on it, if they feel they should.

Response to: I put myself in the friend zone Posted May 21st, 2012 in General

Move on, and act in control. This will do one of two things - if she's into you she'll try to follow, in which case you go ahead and tell her to go out with you, and on that date you get close, kiss, sex, whatever you can achieve to push yourself out of the friend zone. Because of how you established yourself, though, there's little chance of chasing her and getting more than a friendly kiss on the cheek. If she follows you then she's pursuing you, and that gives you the opportunity to move out of that zone.

If she doesn't follow you and lets you do your own thing then it mentally frees you up to find another young woman so you don't repeat the same friend-zone mistake again. Sorry, but if she's not making an effort to get in touch with you then you're not likely to get out of the zone. Sucks to be you, but there are plenty of other attractive women out there; go find another one for yourself.

Silver Surfer. Hard as fuck, but it has the single best soundtrack for it's time. The control is very tight and responsive, and the detail that went into the background and monster design is actually impressive. The down side is that it's hard as fuck, though, and while there are useful power-ups there really isn't any variety in them.

Still beat it a few times, though, regardless - you'd be surprised how well one of the best chiptune soundtracks in history will pump you up to complete a game.

Thanks man, how do you put songs in loops? or are they already looped?

My track is auto-wrapped, already, so if you just insert it into a soundtrack and have it loop to the beginning it'll sound seamless, by design.

If you're asking how to insert a song into a flash as a loop, then I don't really know as I don't use flash (something to do with events in a layer dedicated to sound... or something...).

Taxes have been going down for the past 20 some years and yet the average income has dropped along with it. I mean if this correlation held any water, with taxes so low, wages should be skyrocketting.

The theory is that with fewer taxes to punish companies for hiring more employees then jobs will be generated. And you know what, I actually still hold that would be the case - tax breaks for employment purposes is still a nice thing to have, as those taxes can be incredibly prohibitive for smaller companies, and jobs actually could be created by such breaks.

Unfortunately, most breaks are for things that companies need in order to function, anyway, and while companies will be able to expand faster without them, that doesn't necessarily mean that more jobs will be generated than if they were taxed (more tools =/= more jobs - it very well could just mean that the company is making products or selling services more efficiently). Companies will pay for these expenses no matter how much or little of a break they get (if any at all) - it has NO impact on their investment choices, save for the fact that profitable investments will be a little more profitable and losses will be less painful. It's a waste, in terms of trying to 'generate jobs'; it only serves to make life easier for the companies at the expense of every tax payer (hey, someone's got to pick up the slack, there).

Generally, lower taxes is incredibly reckless and overall ineffective, but I could still see one or two places for it.

Response to: MONEY Posted April 17th, 2012 in NG News

Well, it's a pretty complicated issue, here. On the one hand, if you have plans to really ramp up NG and start generating money in some for or another through the site that you simply need capitol for, then VC would be an excellent boost to your site. On the other hand, if it's just guys offering you money and you don't know where it's going to go then it might be best not to take it, just yet.

One day I would love to see this site open up and explode as a media force to be reckoned with on par to Youtube and Facebook, and I just don't see that happening without some outside help, so you should accept VC one day (This day, if you're ready for it). I don't want to see this site go into disarray, though, because the money couldn't be put to productive use and you had to sell - I have too many memories attached to this site. Seeing it fall because of how another putz handled it would really crush my spirit.

tl;dr, take the money only if you have a plan to make it work in your favor.
