it shows the human condition on the issue (For me anyways) cops can go off at anytime (just like any other person). and cops need to be armed in most cases here even though most of the time its safe. ( your cops are armed with rape whistles and overly bright uniforms)

I always forget how draining it is debating someone with such flawed logic and disregard for facts.

Every police branch in the UK has a firearms unit. Police are regularly deployed with arms when required. You should really know this already. As it's been proven time and time again, the more guns you have in the hands of ill-trained, irresponsbile people (cops included) the more chance you have of getting someone accidentally killed. When Jean Charles de Menezes was shot over here it was a huge deal, whereas that sort of shit would probably not even make the headlines in the states.

Response to: I Don't Believe in Rape Posted December 12th, 2013 in General

I don't even know where to begin really, you've phrased an otherwise borderline legitimate point into something needlessly provocative, how the hell can you 'not believe in rape'? You might have got away with saying 'I don't believe that rape is as bad as it is perceived to be' but how can you claim not to believe in it?

I'll acknowledge that the social stigma attached to rape is bad, and yes it probably makes the situation worse for the victim, but you're anecdote doesn't really cancel out the fact that rape is something that a large portion of people can never get over, and some of them commit suicide. The stigma is justified because in a decent moral society it is up there with one of the worst things that could happen to a person.

You're point could be made more generally, and about anything else, I'm sure that we have a higher president taboo attached to murder than we used to say 1000 years ago. I hope that we are moving towards a future where we try and live as more decent human beings in a society where don't make light of such a serious crime as rape.

To quote the renowned intellectual commentator, mike tyson, on Zimmerman 'It's a disgrace George Zimmerman hasn't been dragged out of his house and tied to a car and taken away. That's the only kind of retribution that people like that understand. It's a disgrace that man hasn't been shot yet. Forget about him being arrested—the fact that he hasn't been shot yet is a disgrace. That's how I feel personally about it.'

The problem with the GOP is that they are trying to appeal to a minority group and not adapting to the shifting voting public in the US. It doesn't really boil down to a matter of who's side is more educated, but more are you overall a better option than your opponent.

So basically, the citizens of the Ukraine want to be a part of the EU, but the president is refusing, and he wants to be closer to Russia.

That's not really what's going on. They wanted a financial deal to go down with the EU, and although it was scheduled to happen the president pulled it at the last minute, probably because he'd rather have better links with Russia. Not to mention the Ukraine government is run by thugs and mafia types. You can see why the people are angry.

Why can't we be this active in our American protests? Nobody knocks shit down, it's all just picket signs and songs. Come on guys, be more like the Ukrainians.

Didn't you guys have the whole wall street protests thing a while ago? and the whole civil rights / Vietnam thingymabobs?

I'm in the same boat as you my man, although I guess the situation may be different here in the UK than the US.

Over here it's gone from about 10% of people going on to university to around 50%, which really devalues the credibility of degrees unless you're doing something where you categorically need to have further education in the field like law or medicine. In my opinion I'd rather not put myself in all the debt and just slog it through on my own. There's no substitute for hard work.

If these people are guilty of anything than put them on trial and bring them to justice, if you don't have any evidence against them then let them go. It really is that simple.
no its not they have to do paperwork for out processing diplomatic talks to repatriate the cheapest cost to send them. hell some countries DON'T WANT these people back and

A branch of government simply has to operate within the legal framework, there should be no exceptions, and certainly not this illegal inhumane limbo that's going on at gt, 'paperwork' is not a valid cop out. They managed to pluck these people out of their respective countries, fly them to a far off island, hold them indefinitely without trial or charges, most probably torturing them, and all of this in the face of international law, but then when it comes to just sending them home there is legislation in the way? Not good enough.

some prisonersare fighting to STAY you just can't dump a person in another country.

To be honest I didn't know about this, thanks for the info.

However I'm not sure this really changes anything, these are 2 people out of 166, 106 of which went on hunger strike so they are undeniably in the minority. Ironically these 2 people only want to stay because they now have the stigma associated with being in gt.

America is behaving like a terrorist state by behaving against international law like this.
HA good one.

What can I say, terrorism is defined by what actions America's enemies do, and counter terrorism is defined as actions America does.

HA right the guy who let thousands of guns across the Mexican border via the ATF, and killing US citizens with drones. yes Obozo is our answer.

I'm probably not as harsh on Obama as you, I don't think he's perfect, but I don't subscribe to the view that his is literally the devil incarnate. He's got one of the toughest jobs on the planet and he'll get negative press whatever he does, however closing Guantanamo is something he should do, he could do, and he's said he's going to do it.

Guantanamo is disgusting and I'm surprised that anyone here actually supports it. If these people are guilty of anything than put them on trial and bring them to justice, if you don't have any evidence against them then let them go. It really is that simple. America is behaving like a terrorist state by behaving against international law like this.

There are people like Shaker Aamad, a British citizen who has been detained since 2002 despite being cleared for release 6 years ago. He is not an anomilie, and something like 60 of the 100ish inmates have been cleared but still remain there. How the fuck is this okay? How long would you let yourself be illegally held on an island without trial for a crime your not even being prosecuted with? Imagine your how your opinion would be if any other country was doing this to American citizens.

Obama made a campaign promise to close Guantanamo in 2010, and he deserves to be hounded for not following through on this. Ironically, far from saving Americans from terrorist attacks Guantanamo is actually used by terrorist groups as a recruitment tool.

Just as you can't win a boxing match by simply blocking the opponent's punches, you can't win an election simply by trying to beat down ever rumor and accusation thrown your way.

Hang on, republicans don't attack democrats?

Instead, simply remind the population that the Democrats had Robert Byrd, KKK member as one of their own, and even celebrated the racist's time in office, which included such things as filibustering the Civil Rights Act of 1964. and voting against the nominations of Thurgood Marshall and Clarence Thomas to the United States Supreme Court.

Nothing trumps an argument better than 50 year old dirt you got on someone.

If the GOP want to win, they need to begin playing the political game on the same level as the Democrats. Target and crush dangerous opposition, dig up dirt and throw it at them. There is no scarcity of mud to be thrown at Democrats, you just have to be willing to do some digging and get your hands dirty.

How about trying to find common ground and working together instead of fucking point scoring? seriously this bullshit is not what politicians should be elected for and its exactly what got the government shut down.

In my opinion politics would appeal to more people (the majority of which do not vote) if they spent less time in screaming matches against their opponents and spent more energy focusing on policies that would appeal to the people they supposedly represent. Just a thought.

Response to: Why are liberals so hated? Posted November 28th, 2013 in Politics

Yes... that war on drugs started by progressives in the early 1900's, continued by FDR going after pot to help his corporate friend, and ranked up from that by LBJ.

The 'War on drugs's isn't from early 1900s it's from the Nixon presidency in the early 1970s. If the whole idea of a war on drugs was to stop people taking drugs, stop the increase in smuggling of drugs or stop the availability of drugs then it has been a consistent expensive failure. Drugs are cheaper, stronger, and more widely availble now than ever before, despite the millions they pump into Columbia

But thanks for proving my point.

"I decided to do drugs and fall victim to drug dealers... it's YOUR responsibility to help me!"

How did I prove your point? Sometimes you've got to accept that there's always going to be drug addicts and it's a choice between helping them or doing nothing.

Forcing the taxpayer to fund methadone clinics for junkies= liberal acceptance of drug use as a lifestyle choice, something forced on people, not something they chose to do.

The taxpayer is forced into funding a lot worse than that, a monstrously large portion of it goes towards sustaining expensive and pointless foreign policy.

You clearly don't know anything about what a methadone clinic is or why they are a viable alternative to letting addicts fall to the mercy of drug dealers. The war on drugs is a failed hangover from a conservative presidency, which has failed in every important aspect.
