I think what you're feeling has more to do with sensationalist media rather than the bubblings of revolution.

looking for background artist paid Posted April 4th, 2014 in Art

that's it really, I'm looking to collab with someone who can produce a couple of high quality backgrounds for a music video I'm producing.

I would like to be able to draw them myself but I may have too much work to do already and backgrounds have never been my strength

please PM me some examples of your work and a rough idea of price and we'll take it from there :)

all the best,
Sam

Response to: Gay Marriage Legalized In Uk Posted March 30th, 2014 in Politics

Completely commendable and overdue.

Christianity doesn't have sole authority on marriage, it's a state issue and the government shouldn't discriminate on marriage based on sexual preference.

Considering how much the media here in the UK bash places like Russia and Uganda that are introducing very homophobic legislation it's surprising that we have been hypocrites for so long by not having this made law sooner.

Sometimes I feel like this is better. I suppose I feel like instead of just abstaining from what's in general a pretty shitty industry, you're boycotting inherently evil practices while supporting the more morally acceptable ones. Not that you can ever really rule out nasty shit happening unless you're intimately involved in the rearing of the animals 'emselves.

But I get the impression not many people share this view. I went to a shop on Sunday to buy eggs, and there were no free range ones. I think it's about a 10p difference now; I don't understand how anyone could still justify buying eggs from battery hens, let alone how it could be unprofitable for a shop to stock free range eggs.

There are some pretty grizzly documentaries I've seen about that, like the practise that a lot of battery farms use of sawing off hens' beaks so that they don't peck each other to death in the cages. I always feel bad on vegetarians because they get stick off people for 'preaching at them' over the meat industry, but if half the people were properly informed about just how bad it is they would probably change their eating habits.

I think the problem isn't with eating meat, our bodies are designed to eat it if you look at our teeth, if we had evolved to be herbivores we would have all molars. The problems lies with capitalism, and the way that the meat industry wants to maximise profits and minimise running costs. It's cheaper for them to keep all their product contained and force fed in meat factories rather than taking more land and resources to keep them freeranged. It's pretty depressing.

Response to: Morality of Eating Meat Posted March 25th, 2014 in General

Completey agree with OP, as a society were are completely isolated to the suffering and pain that our nicely packaged meat parcels have gone through. I am a hypocrite in that I do eat meat when it is surved to me, but often if I have the choice between meat or not when I am buying food I will try and go with no meat. If we can't not eat meat then we should at least be knowledgable and sufficiently guilty about the choice we make, ie buying free range over meat that has lived and died in a cage.

Response to: Looking For Animator (Paid) Posted March 23rd, 2014 in Collaboration

At 3/14/14 06:44 PM, Tonash wrote: Hi there folks.

I'll just throw my 2 cents in here for what it's worth, and I'll be honest but respectful.

Basically I'm just going to echo what RD said and underline the fact that you're talking about what could spiral into 1-3 months worth of work and you're only willing to pay less than a day's wage for an unskilled worker. Animation is a skill, not everyone can do it, and even those that have potential need to put in hours of practise, improvement, not to mention the cost of software like flash or hardware like graphics tablets. So I don't think you're being fair or realistic with that budget.

Just as a general comparison, jazza will typically charge about $800 - $4000 per minute of animation depening on complexity. At the moment I'm still green in the freelance game but I still charge around $100-$500 per minute.

If you're only going to offer $20 then don't be surprised if you get little or no response, and the response you get will be from very unskilled or unreliable workers. You may as well not offer to pay anything since the amount you are offering isn't anywhere near enough to be a motivational factor. Or of course there's nothing to stop you downloading a trial version of flash and cooking up something yourself for free.

Hope this has been helpful x

Response to: Why Isn't This A Thing?!? Posted March 17th, 2014 in General

I completely agree, in fact I think I've made a similar thread to this in the past.

I don't want to seem too pessimistic but Newgrounds has been on a downward spiral in terms of it's popularity for years, and so much of that attention has shifted towards the mobile App market. It always seemed to me to be a no brainer for the ng crew to try and appeal to that demographic in conjunction with the site.

even a simple dumb app that has 'top movie of the day' or something would be worth a try.

Response to: Focus Group? Posted March 16th, 2014 in Collaboration

This is an awesome idea and I'm totally down for it if you're interested :)

I've already got 3 guys who I almost always confer with whenever I've got a new project in the works, one of them has mediocre skills, one of them is pretty good, and the other works in-industry in a branch of Disney. I always find their feedback really helpful, and I guess this sort of comradery / networking is the only element that I guess I missed out on by choosing not to study animation at university and just diving in and freelancing.

So yeh, I'm more than happy to bounce ideas off you if that's cool. I don't like giving my fb details out over newgrounds so I'll drop you a PM.

and this goes to anyone else reading this who is also in the same boat :)

Flash Pro CC hotkey question Posted March 13th, 2014 in Animation

Hey guys and dolls,

I've just upgraded from CS6 to Pro CC and there's a quick question I've got for everyone who's familiar with PCC

In the old version you could 'scroll' through the frames without having to click on each one individually by holding down Shift + scrolling on the scroller on your mouse.

It appears that it won't let you do that with PCC so I was just wondering if anyone here knows if you can still do that by using a different hotkey, or if they've just got rid of it entirely because they are dicks.

Either way I'd appreciate the info

Have a good night / life / afterlife

Yes Fim. May 3rd marks the first day of the tournament. This is the open round where anyone can join in and make their submissions, after that only the best of the best will move on. Think you got what it takes?

Who knows haha. It depends if I can think up a decent idea with the criteria they set. I feel like technically I have the skill set to do quiet well if I have the inspiration, one of my movies got a daily award and a front page so I'm allowing myself to be a bit optimistic :)

Best specs for an animator's PC? Posted February 17th, 2014 in Animation

I'm in the process of updataing my computer, I guess it's only been about 4 years since I bought it new, but I was working on a pretty chunky flash file the other day (I think it was just under 1.5GB) and it took my PC 7 minutes to save. Not good. So I am updating it to something more slick, and this time round I think I'm going to go for something specifically tailored towards animating,

It got me thinking, what is the best specifications for an animator these-days? What do you use? And what's the best thing to go for?

Do you think it's better to go Windows or Mac?

What's the best spec for working with things like Flash, Toon Boom Pro2, Maya, or 3DS Max?

How often do you update your computer?

And how much would you be willing to spend?

Response to: The Scottish Currency Posted February 17th, 2014 in Politics

I feel this thread should have been called 'Scottish succession' because the Scottish currency aspect is just one part iof a wider movement. But yeh, shit is scary, because there's a chance they could actually succeed.

The only argument they have is that the Scottish people may genuinely want to be separate, and I don't think anyone can have a counter argument for that. if we're talking democracy here, isn't that enough? If 51% of texans want their state to separate from the US should they be allowed to do it?

If you analyse any other aspect of the SNP referendum then it all starts to go downhill worse than a bobsleigh at Sochi. Their financial side is fucked. Their only option they will have is to create their own currency which will be an expensive lengthy process, they won't be allowed to use the pound, even if they did they would essentially be letting a foreign country determine their interest rates. and they won't be allowed into the EU since Spain would almost definitely veto that in the understanding that the UK would veto Catalonia which also has a wide popular movement for succession in Spain. They won't want to send a message to Catalonia showing that it's that easy to get accepted into the euro.

I don't see the SNP as bringing anything to the table besides institutionalised racism towards the English, and as a Brit it does make me feel sad to think that such a historic deep rooted union may end in my lifetime for no real reason. Scots are right to think politics is very Westminster centric, but they have already have a separate Scottish parliament that rules on purely Scottish legislation, so they already have the bets of both worlds. Leaving the UK will create a hell of a lot more problems then the ones they are in now.

And also what would we do about the UK flag? (Which is a combined English + Scottish)

And wasn't the very last pm Scottish?

Are you sure about that? I was always under the impression that it was chosen manually.. I guess there's some poor ng staff memeber who has to watch all the incoming traffic and pick out animations that hit the right criteria for front page. It's certainly not always the case that daily 1st gets automatically front paged.

Response to: The Animators "Right of Passage" Posted February 7th, 2014 in Animation

Making gimmicky video game parodies is a bit of a fad, I don't think that automatically qualifies you to be 'a real animator'. For me the real right of passage is when you stop making animations for fun as a hobby, and somebody actually pays you to create something.
