Response to: What do you think of Ableton? Posted May 30th, 2013 in Audio

Hey, I've been wanting to reply to this thread for the longest, but had been too busy to do so!

I think Ableton Live is a nifty "utility", as you put it. It has it's own way(s) of producing music, yet me being predominantly a GarageBand user, feel I can relate more with Live than I could with other music software utilities such as FL Studio or Logic.

I never was really quite comfortable with FL Studio's "pattern-based" sequencing, among other workflow ishies I had with it. Though Logic is supposed to have connections with GarageBand, it's approach for entry-level, in my opinion feels pretty steep. In other words, not quite as "straight-forward" as I'd like it to be.

Though I didn't know much about how to use Ableton Live at first, I was very happy to find and use the tutorials that it had built-in. Within minutes to an hour or so, Live felt more and more like a 2nd home to my music production (GarageBand being the 1st). The excitement I felt when i finally learned how to sidechain compress!

As with any DAW, there are rules and functions that are specific to each one. When it comes to similarities in these areas, I feel that while Live and GarageBand are quite different in what is and isn't allowed to be done, they feel very similar.

While, I'm not really too keen on the pattern-based approach to music making, I think the session mode is a truly neat unique approach to making music. I like that I can essentially hotkey practically an entire song of mine, from scene to scene in the session view with the custom key map; even better yet recording all those individual scenes into a full song in the arrangement view.

I've used both modes to make music in Live, though I think I feel more used to arrangement view, as it closer to how music is made in GarageBand.

Now, I use Live Lite 8, but I've become rather satisfied with what I've been able to do with the limitations of it. The additional [free] downloadable packs are a nice touch and help give more life to the Lite version.

I personally can't wait for Live Lite 9, and of course be able to use it! It's good to know in Live 9, one can finally make all the automations they know and love from arrangement mode in session mode!

When I can afford it, I'd DEFINITELY love to experience the full version of Live.

* sorry for necro-posting, hope everyone understands =/

Response to: What Do You use? Posted May 27th, 2013 in Audio

I have quite a few music makers at my disposal: GarageBand, OpenMPT, and Live to name a few.

I mainly make my music with GarageBand. I've used FL Studio, at least once or twice for producing music, though I often find myself doing more in Live as second to GarageBand.

If I'm doing classical music, I'll typically use my GarageBand expansion packs such as Symphony Orchestra, AMG, or Boldt Instruments.

I personally believe it's really the DAW that interests you the most that will be the one you stick to or end up using the most; its tools such as synths, Virtual Synthesizer Technologies/Audio Units and mix-master equipment would most likely be a close 2nd.

When it comes to remixes/covers that I want to do, I'll usually find a track to download or use of the song and sit it in my project. I'd pick out parts that I may want to use and cut them out individually sometimes, or just break down the track as a whole at times too.

I tend to do more covers than I do remixes, as I sometimes want to see how close I can sound to the originals with what I have, 'specially given when the original artists use the exact same software as I do! I really enjoy that.

Wow a MIDI controller from scratch?

I'd like to have my multi-cover song project done around the start of summer, but if not, I guess that would be one thing to look forward to...

Newgrounds Reacts To Mapoti Posted April 2nd, 2013 in General

This is an interesting video. One way or another, there's people like this online. It's sad that ppl who can relate to this stuff's been simplified so much.

If you ask me this is more or less a social networking issue, but to tell the truth, a whole lot of the net is comprised of that. Can it be fixed? Probably not. I don't hate it.

One question, I do have is, if you were one of the types mentioned by Ryan in the preceding video, which would you be, and if possible explain your reason? At the most, I think I'd be the "grammar nazi".

Image-Line & General Mills collab Posted April 1st, 2013 in Audio

Fruity Loops creator Image-Line and Cheerios manufacturer General Mills have recently worked on a joint-venture project that's gone into mass production recently.

Apparently it's been designed to compete with a well-known cereal of Kellogg's, but for the sake of this product's name, there will be no need for an "abbreviation" of the products name.

Here it is, believe it or not!

boom!

I stopped the video as soon as I saw the mentioning of CrossOver.

Image-Line is already working with CrossOver already on making a "native" version of FL for Mac.

What may be neat about this idea however, is that this isn't under the wing of Image-Line's closed beta (highly experienced users only).

Hopefully the compatibility issues (if any) will be resolved in good time, and 64-bit processing power will be fully taken advantage of...

Sure we do!

Ragnarok Online's been around for 10 years, though I can't say I recall seeing anywhere Gravity/Lee Myoung-Jin doing a public celebration in-game or anything like that.

Surely this place has had more prime years, but it's here for the sake of audio, and let's keep it going.

I am so glad that Cakewalk doesn't require those USB keys to so much as try their gear out, because this is downright bad.

Anyone had this issue with the installation of their trial? Can't tell you how long I waited to check this out. I tried installing both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions, and get the same thing.

Please help if you can.

Response to: PlayStation 4 thread! Posted February 20th, 2013 in Video Games

It was an interesting announcement. It was rumored by one source that today's meeting was probably announcing Sony's departure from the console business (relished the thought personally), but [unfortunately] it seems that Yuta Sakurai's (Nomura financial analyst) 6-year old prediction fell through and Sony is bringing forth the PS4.

It was the first time I watched a non-E3 game-related meeting live and it was pretty cool. Two hours of incredible yet at some times familiar (remember the Agni's Philosophy demo from 2012?) bits of playstation goodness, that most likely wouldn't have been squeezed into Sony's E3 2013 conference.

The controller looks okay. Still feel a bit disappointed about a couple things about it: 1. The DualShock design is still being used. 2. The controller does not appear to be of any threat to the Wii U controller (at least), in respect to only being able to play a game off TV with the purchase of a PlayStation Vita. The "Share" feature however, is a really nice idea.

As other people here have noted, even for 2 hours the info still sounded very hush-hush (even the in-meeting audience sounded less than enthused at times).

Third-party developers sounded rather excited to be developing for PS4. Chances are we'll find out more about why developers are so excited when we see Sony's E3 conference.

Meanwhile, Microsoft and Nintendo hopefully have some really good aces up their sleeves that could help slow the roll of the PS4's holiday launch.

As stated above, as long as all your performers are fine with it. You need to sort that out amongst yourselves. Are any of them also Newgrounds users?

They may be, and thank you for answering my questions.

Response to: Mac13 - Jan/Feb Discussion Posted February 14th, 2013 in Audio

Questions for this MAC:

1. What is meant by the term "synthetic". Are we talking about "synthesizer" synths of a digital or analog nature?

2. What are these "plugins" which are spoken of? Do they refer to VSTs, soundfonts, or something completely different?

3. Can a live orchestra be used? If yes, can it be seen as a mere collaboration between author and performer (single-entity); they'll still be credited, of course.

4. Also on the account of live orchestra, is it okay to have a blend of mainly live orchestra, with less realistic sounding VST/VSTi's or otherwise?

5. If no one else, but myself, in a collaboration have an interest in earning a prize, is it okay to be understood that I'll be the only one in the project reaping the rewards?
