Why don't you do the same? learn spanish!

¿Qué te cuesta aprender español?
assuming you're in the states, doesn't it make sense you would learn the english language? why are americans now expected to learn spanish in return? you wouldn't see this kind of thing going on in any other country.
Well, almost every school forces English as an assignment here, and we have to learn it because of the USA being next to us. It would be cool that the USA did the same, but with Spanish. But fuck, I doubt they would. They are so fucking racist with us to actually give a shit.

Meh.

the sad truth is that humans have a very low capacity for knowing words. it's been scientifically proven that most people who are multilingual have very limited vocabularies in all of the languages they know. especially if they know more than 2. not to say this is true for all, but i don't really want to test if for myself. why not just make a universal secondary language and teach it to everyone along with their native language?

Yes, i do live in the US. i heard that it once was a great country, but it went to shit way before i was born... or maybe i just can't remember it when it was better. anyway, school is a corrupt system, it's only important because it exists. if it had never existed i doubt everyone would just be drooling vegetables, there are other ways to learn. they make jobs only available to those that have had alot of school because the government tells them that school makes people smarter. it isnt true, some things are self taught with just the smallest amount of instruction, and for those who are good at it, it comes naturally. but the horrible truth is that if there are 2 people applying for a job, one is exceptional at it but dropped out of high school, but the other has a high school diploma and is horrible at it, which one will get the job? the one with the fancy piece of paper of course.

im not against school for what it set out to do, i hate what it has become. it's become a nessesity almost, the government puts out more propaganda for school than the Nazis did. and the sad thing is, people believe it. you only get to live once, so why should i live my life how they tell me to? most people's lives fit into the same template: be born>go to school>get a job and move out>get married and have kids>die.

what if i want something different? why do i have to live in a system that makes such a huge choice FOR me without my consent? but that question seems to be a taboo of a sort, no one will give me a straight answer to it, they just say that it's the system and i gotta live with it.

never once, here or for real, have i ever said that knowledge is useless. some is however, like the example you used "the sky is blue". does it really matter what color it is? and that's not even true all the time, sometimes its grey, or pink, or black, or white. but does it matter? if you tell someone that the sky is up above everything else in the world, wont that be enough to give them the ability to figure out what the sky is?

so in the end, the problem with school is that they teach a little too much, after they tell the basic idea, they go into the most minute details and it really gets boring and pointless? do i really need to know the exact time of day hitler was born, or every general's name that was in every battle of WW1? or do i need to remember what scientists call rust formations in rocks? it's not school in general im against, it's just the way they are run, they way they do things. it's repetitive and boring, and if im bored with something how can i learn it?

1) What is Executive Order 9066?

basically, racism against the japanese. sent them off to concentration camps during WW2 (or was it WW1? does it really matter which one? war is pointless, its just mugging on an international scale)

2) Name nine countries in South-East Asia.

China, Japan, The Koreas, Thailand, The Philippines, Mongolia, Cambodia, Indonesia. thats all i can think of right now

3) What is the significance of Pax Britannica?

im probably wrong, but i think it's some sort of british peace treaty

4) Why is the Falklands War important to Margaret Thatcher?

i have no idea. would it help me in any way if i did?

5) Who is George Wallace?

a politician. he once ran for president. i think. or did you mean the comedian.

6) What is the Great Society?

hmmm.... dunno.

7) What is a firestorm?

finally, some science. a firestorm is when a fire (usually a forest fire) gets so big that the rising heat makes wind currents that causes it to spread more rapidly and makes it pretty hard to put out.

8) Explain a little bit on what Paul Farmer have done.

read about him in a national geographic i think. gives medical help to people in 3rd world countries i think.

9) What are the 13 Zodiac Constellations?

i thought there were only 12... i really dont care about horoscopes and astrology.

10) Why is the fossil Lucy important to Anthropology?

now that one i remember. she was an astrolopithicus skeleton. the scientist that discovered her was listening to the song Lucy In The Skt With Diamonds at the time, and that's how she was named. that's by the beatles by the way.

This is the preceding attitude to a simple law of social dynamics caused countercontrol. People are less likely to cooperate when action is coerced.

Watching the discovery channel is voluntary, an extension of freedom, and thus intrinsically carries positive personal associations - increasing the likelihood to enjoy, listen, and involve yourself in what's being presented.

Ofcourse, at school. There are additional factors such as the attitudes of the teachers and of the students. But don't think that only goes one direction either. A caring class can make a very good teacher.

actually, you are completely right. now that i think about it i did once have a very good teacher. ive been to so many different schools and had so many teachers that id forgotten, but he was the only good teacher i ever had. he actually liked the subject he taught, he was my science teacher in 6th grade, it was a horrible school, worse than most, it was surprising that he would be there of all places, but he actually liked his subject and he even had a huge collection of national geographics. he gave a shit about his students questions, and never avoided them. i actually learned from him. if it wasnt for him i would probably never heard of national geographic, let alone read them. i now have hundreds of them, ive read all of them and learned things they would never have taught in school. so in an indirect way, he taught me a hell of alot.

At 4/27/08 11:23 PM, Dr-Worm wrote: Your attitude about the whole education thing is just very wrong. I actually do think that there's a lot of useless shit in the high school education system, and that it needs a massive overhaul, but the problem isn't with the education itself, it's in the way in which it's taught. I think that after a certain point, most kids have learned the skills that are necessary to be functional members of society, and that point, they should be able to learn about what they're interested in and largely avoid what they aren't. And yes, most people call this magical concept "college," but I think it could work in high school as well, with some tweaking.

The school system is full of blatant hypocrisy. We are encouraged only to take difficult courses (AP's and such) if they concern topics that truly interest us, yet we have a college application process that demands that we take as many of those courses as possible, like it or not. I've always found something kind of wrong with that. I haven't found something wrong with learning about literature and history and geometry and such.

Also, while your assessment of the Pledge is ridiculously one-sided, under-informed, under-developed, and overblown, I do agree that there is something about it that is unsettlingly propaganda-tastic. I don't know what kind of hick school you go to, though, because I stopped doing the Pledge every morning in 3rd or 4th grade (not to mention the fact that our electives are free).

exactly what im saying. finally someone who understands (i admit, i didn't write it out as well as i could have)
i love to learn things, i defiantly believe that knowledge is power, but how can one learn if it's all about memory and nothing more? i believe that to learn, one must be interested. and school is as dull as a... um... well, there really isn't anything quite that dull. the teachers hate their jobs, and it shows. it rubs off on everyone else, no one wants to be there, not teachers or students.
i read national geographic and watch science documentaries all the time. on my own time. i learn alot from them. there is a difference between learning and remembering. remembering is something that you do in school to get a good grade that is soon forgotten. learning is to know, something that almost becomes an instinct or a feeling. i can honestly say ive never felt that way about anything i ever "learned" at school.

knowledge is power, school is useless

I stopped reading at that point. I'm wondering how long it'll take before there's some sort of blame placed on typographical error(s).

And no, I'm not really a grammar fanatic, or spelling for that matter, but when people start picking apart what they're supposed to be learning....

if you had read all i had to say, you would have realized what i was actually talking about. what happens in English class all the time is that the teacher asks one's opinion of a piece of literature, the says that the opinion is wrong. English, or literature as i would prefer it be called, is one of my best subjects (science is second if it's physics or biology, but i haven't had one of them in years) if i have alot of time i can write some good stuff, but i prefer not to use proper grammar. it makes it seem too formal.

also i believe that it's impossible to write anything without being at least somewhat biased. everyone has a point of view on things, is it ever possible to be truly neutral on a serious matter? and with that, history books are often filled with lies created over the years as the truth warped itself to the writer's views, and in the end who really knows what happened?

i question everything, and im hated for it by my teachers. if i ask them a question that really makes them think, instead of trying to answer it they simply get pissed off and act as if i had asked an offensive personal question. they constantly harass me, but i refuse to give in. i question everything because i want to learn things, and to know things. and i realized one thing that no one else here seems to. there is a huge difference between school and education.
