I guess my answer to that question depends on whether you're taking issue with ALL nation-based pride, or just nation-based pride that you perceive as a slight to state-pride. And, whether you take issue with ancestral pride.

Personally, I don't think that pride in a state is EVER warranted. I think blind allegiance to governance is what cedes the power the governed hold over their state to that state. Pride in a nation I feel is misplaced, though typically harmless (we're all people, after all).

Despite that, I'm proud of my Scotish/Irish ancestry only insofar as it has made me the person that I am, physically. I'm proud of my state in that is allows me to continue my life goals and further my lifestyle aspirations. I'm proud of my nation because it is home to a diverse community of a generally education-oriented population (the Boston metropolitan area is one of the foremost centers of education in the world). But my pride is limited only to these aspects and I should like to believe that it is not blinding.

Faith and knowledge are opposite sides of the same coin. Given that we live in a world where fact relies on observation and belief relies on faith in the known: knowledge of the unknown is impossible but faith that what's known can be present in the unknown is.

Basically: don't begrudge one their faith, for it is rooted and untouchable--firmly planted outside the realm of the knowable.

Also: you DO need reference to know what is and is not right. That reference can be a book, your parents, your family, your friends, or whatever; without any reference it is unlikely that you will come to decide on your own through the course of your development that anything other than that which is thought to be for your best interest. Instincts for survival demand it.

Response to: 6.7 Magnitude Earthqauke htis Japan Posted June 22nd, 2011 in General

There is an exponential amount of lesser aftershocks following a major quake. This is one of the projected dozen or so nearly 7.0 magnitude quakes that should occur within the year following the original quake (a magnitude 9). The real problem will be when one of the 8.0 quakes hit... it'll depend where exactly the epicenter is but if it's south of the original one and it hits Tokyo there will be a lot of damages.

I think aftershocks typically go something like for a given earthquake, there will be double the amount of aftershocks for each point down on the scale. So for this magnitude 9 quake, 2 magnitude 8, four magnitude 7, eight magnitude 6, sixteen magnitude 5, etc.

YEA BRUINS! So great reading through this topic and seeing all the 'Oh yea definitely Canucks take game 7 it just makes the most sense yep," posts.

Anyway, I'll be sure to take pictures of the parade for all of you!

Response to: 2011 Stanley Cup Playoffs Posted June 9th, 2011 in General

Just gotta take one off the home team tomorrow night. Even when the Canucks were winning, we've been keeping their offense in check nicely with solid defense and top-notch goaltending. I just don't think the twins are up to task in the series. Out of this whole series, I think the play I'll treasure most is Thomas levelling Sedin when he tried to glove the puck into a good scoring position.

Seriously. That was freakin' great. Go Bruins!

Response to: Windows 7 x64 = Worst mistake ever Posted June 8th, 2011 in General

Dude... you realize that pretty much all Vista drivers function on Windows 7, right? Basically, if you'd just saved your drivers folder from your old OS and pointed the devices that didn't pick up drivers automatically to that saved folder you would have been up and running in no time.

I hate (read: relish and enjoy thoroughly) to tell you this, but: you experienced classic symptoms of PEBKAC.

As someone who gets accused of using big words often, I usually opt for the word choice that creates the best rhythm in my head (without sacrificing meaning).

Yes. I can appreciate that sentiment. I don't know that I actually think to myself "hmm, the rhythm of this sentence is wrong I need to change things around," but I definitely consider the eloquence of my communique before I submit it for others' perusal.

To speak to the points the original post brought forth: I don't know why people feel as if a well-read and well-spoken person is intending to make them feel inferior in any way? I have invested a lot of time and effort into building a working vocabulary that is larger than average and I continue to build on that effort in order to maintain it. When I see someone use a word that I'm not familiar with, I'm delighted to have the opportunity to learn its meaning, correct usage, and incorporate it into my lexicon.

So I guess it's just a difference in attitude. While you (OP) and others treat language as a necessary means for conveying thought, I see it as an opportunity to connect with another. Meaningful dialog is the second oldest form of entertainment our species has and the first step we took away from our primordiality.

Response to: I might die! Tornado warning! Posted June 1st, 2011 in General

Thankfully, I think driving from work (Middlesex County) back home (Essex County) is going to put me right on the eastern edge of the warning zone. I don't think the coast is supposed to have the same tornado warning that inland has.

Even though it'd be kinda cool to see a tornado. We only get snow here and that's not really that immediately dangerous like a tornado or a hurricane could be.

I'm locking this thread because I have it on pretty good authority that this is basically just a depository for you and an alternate account of yours (or a friend who has at several points accessed his account from the same place as you have used yours) to complain about random, gossipy things. You have a userpage for such nonsense. A legitimate club we have no problem with, but this has no recurring membership other than those two accounts.

Sens: consider yourself lucky that I'm not banning you for suggesting that this thread should have been locked long ago. Stating such on the forums is something you should know better than to do.

Yea, this is why I liked hopping into the NG IRC back in the day. All the people you describe would hang out there. DLG, EveningShift, NewEvolution, etc.

I look forward to the day when I can finally move from my noob upbringing into Ent status. Of course, the issue with being an Ent is that your job requires you to work with computers all day... so when you get the free time to sit on a forum you find out that you'd rather not.

Response to: Growing a great sturdy beard...? Posted May 25th, 2011 in General

Your facial hair is going to grow the same regardless of how often you shave it. The claim that shaving more often causes it to grow in thicker is false (more like, as it grows in thicker and faster you are forced to shave more often).

Basically, unless you have the right genes, you aren't going to be able to grow a decent beard until you're like 30. Some people can grow them at 15, some people by 20, some by 25. I can grow a full beard, but it's weak outside of the goatee area so I tend to get sick of it after a couple weeks and go back to clean-shaven/stubble.

Chicks actually dig it if you come off as an egotistical douchebag. 'Fear' is not a trait chicks dig. Of course, I'm referring to desirable chicks that know they're desirable. Women who have low self esteem will still swoon over the egotistical douchebags but will also be willing to go for modest pussies.

I know this because grade school was the modest pussy years of my life.

Not quite. The difference is that if something is being watched at 24 frames per second, a large color transition between two frames will be much more noticable over the span of 1/24 of a second vs. 1/60 of a second or 1/120 of a second or 1/240 of a second. The human eye's limit is purported to be at around the 60 FPS rate, but people notice the difference between the 60Hz refresh rate vs. the 120 Hz refresh rate.

Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm definitely not an expert on this stuff, just doesn't make sense to me. Resolution seems like a much bigger deal.

Resolution is important, but refresh rate and refresh style are also hugely important. The 'P' in 1080p stands for 'progressive' and refers to the way the television scans to refresh the image. A progressive scan is better than an 'I' or 'interlaced' scan, because instead of scanning through the image in two sweeps to update it (it's so fast you can't really perceive it... but still) it only takes one sweep to update the image.

And none of that applies to new TVs anyway, because Plasma and LCD tvs don't need to 'scan' anymore when they refresh the image, the pixels that are emitting the light do so simultaneously. It's up to the source to determine the best picture you'll get, even if you're getting 1080i source it'll still display in 1080p on the screen because the TV can upconvert (because it doesn't have to scan at all).

That's where the higher Hz refresh rate comes into play. If you have a better refresh rate, fast-moving things will seem crisper and won't be subject to as much blur.

I feel pretty good, 'cause my signature's badass for it's MSPaint origins. Blond hair would be a tough adjustment but not too over the top (provided it was a natural blond and not died). I'm somewhat proficient with a bow and arrow anyway, I think I'd have the advantage over most others in this department because I don't believe any of the other NG weapons are ranged weapons, plus I've hand-to-hand combat training anyway

Overall, all's well.

Response to: Do you have a job? Posted May 16th, 2011 in General

Full time job. They reimburse expenses (such as gas for driving to clients), provide me with a laptop, pay my phone bill for the smart phone they require I maintain (iPhone 4 ftw), pay for certification tests that I take (two attempts per test, pass or fail), are flexible, and offer PTO yearly.

The client I work every day at has unlimited free coffee in the kitchen. Basically, I'm bottom rung on an IT career. Now that I've got a year's experience under my belt, I'll get some certifications and start earning some real money, not that I'm being poorly compensated at the moment.

Response to: Most Badass Apartment Ever Posted May 13th, 2011 in General

I had this lengthy case-by-case response all typed out, but in the rush of doing other things at work yesterday apparently navigated away from the BBS by accident. So, you guys just get a catch-all to why I disagree with a lot of the common complaints.

- Claustrophobia:
--> C'mon... 20% of the wall in that place is an open window. : / I can see it in the toilet closet. But the rest of the place when put-away is sizeable. More space in that one room than any other single room in a normal residence I've been in.

- Laziness with putting things away:
--> Impossible. You couldn't do something else in the place UNTIL you put something away. The most intensive put-away effort is the dinner table, and you wouldn't be able to pull the bed out until you did so.

- Shitty view:
--> Yes, I do like the view of grungy buildings. How can you not see a sprawling city laid out before you and not feel like you're a part of something important? Feel like you've something before you to conquer? I appreciate the man-hours of work that go into building a huge city and maintaining it and even if dirty buildings aren't aesthetically pleasing, I certainly appreciate them when confronted.

- Cave-like:
--> Ok, I guess I can give you that. Really though... doesn't seem that difficult to put in some appropriate lighting or perhaps a piece of art of two on one of the 'doors'.

- Shower too close to the kitchen:
--> Wha--? There's a glass partition between the two. Where else would you be able to take a shower while you were cooking something and not have to worry about it burning?

Anyway, I think that perhaps the best feature of the place is that it encourages you to only do what you need to do there and then get out and live. I like having a small space like that to call mine. Obviously, one's mindset changes when they become attached to a spouse and/or offspring, but when you're a single guy (or gal) you don't really need that much. You don't have the sort of income that allows you to accumulate junk (typically) and so a small space like that would be great.
