Response to: How much do you eat? Posted September 18th, 2014 in General

I eat a lot. Today's food:
- 2-3 egg omelette with lots of spinache, mushroom, onion, capsicum, and tomato
- Two small slices of pizza
- Some sort of veggie stir fry with local broccoli (really long and thin brocolli)
- Some sort of kale veggie mix
- A small banana smoothie thing
- Some carrot/orange juice
- 24-30oz of coffee
- Two rice/bean/guacamole/tomato/cheese tacos
- Two small falafel sandwich things with mushroom stroganoff that I used as a dipping sauce (who makes falafel things without tzatziki?)

Now that I've just completed my couple mile run and upper body weight routine, I'm considering eating a little bit of this trail mix I have... but I'll probably just pass out instead.

You really are better off, my man. Her cheating is actually independent of your worth as a person and/or sexual being and/or whatever your relationship with her was based upon. It's a reflection of her immaturity as a person and a symptom of a relationship that ultimately couldn't fulfill either of you.

There won't be others in the future because they're already here right now. Best of luck in meeting her.

Response to: Texas Rasberry Crazy Ants Posted August 16th, 2014 in General

Wow, sounds very similar to the European Fire Ants we have invading up here in the Northeast. They aren't attracted to indoor locations, thankfully... but they have a similar build and completely out-compete all native species. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myrmica_rubra)

We've got loads of the nests at my parents' house. It's a perfect environment for them, since they like humid, coastal areas and we're half a mile from the beach and adjacent to wetlands. They, too, have multiple queens per colony, tend aphids, and don't nest in mounds. The worst part is that they'll set up shop in an otherwise innocuous pile of leaves or in the roots of small plants. Birds won't nest where there's an infestation because the red ants will sting freshly-hatched chicks to death (nests will frequently be found at the base of trees and the ants will scale the trees to tend aphids on the leaves or consume the sap themselves).

The only lucky thing is that, for whatever reason, Myrmica Rubra doesn't send out winged queens in the spring here in the States. So the colonies have to spread by 'budding'.

They're TERRIBLE, though. I don't think the sting is as bad as the fire ants invading the Southern US, but if you don't notice that you've stepped on a nest you're gonna have a bad time.

It's amazing how much human activity has changed this planet.

Response to: Little teens spreading their legs Posted July 17th, 2014 in General

It's a natural thing. People do it because it feels good. It's the same reason you're posting on Newgrounds, or eating breakfast, or playing video games, or whatever, really.

Teenage pregnancy does not guarantee a life of hardship for the parent, but it does increase the instability of the child's environment. It's difficult to raise a child when you yourself are still a child.

Blame is useless here. If you truly worry about the well-being of your fellow children (no offense... as a child I hated being called a child, too), pressure policy-makers to increase funding for sex education and increase access to contraception for young women.

It's unconscionable that a young woman should be capable of gestation as early as age 10 or 11, but, in order to protect herself from unwanted pregnancy, must either overcome the negative judgment of her parents, teachers, and/or pharmacist or deflect the advances of male peers. Outrageous.

Children are not capable of carefully considering the long-term consequences of their actions. That part of the brain doesn't fully develop until after one can legally drink alcohol.

I fear seeing one of my close friends having to be a Mother, or Father, at a young age, and watch their lives get ruined, over a 10 second orgasm which felt good at the moment, but costed them their life. I don't even know what to blame it on, Parents? Society? Fuck..

At 7/12/14 01:59 AM, GoryBlizzard wrote: The only residents that I hope will be driven away by deteriorating conditions are the transplants, not the natives who've seen it all.

Unfortunately, when the neighborhood goes to hell, everybody wants to leave equally. Your hope is misplaced.

And yeah, we'll just be left with brothers and sisters all from here stuggling equally without worrying (hopefully) about the big guys that think they're doing us good by "saving" us. I am one of those people that think Detroit should have been left alone in its state of disrepair and debt and because there are hipsters there that have done and continue to damage there, well, that's a problem. If we become the next Detroit, I say we are to be left alone and only to get help if we solicit it. No more, no less.

Which is silly, because I'm sure very few NYC residents will agree with you. Additionally, there is no extra right in policy-making afforded to people who have always lived in NYC vs. people who have relocated there. Additionally, how can you say that it's only non-NYC-natives that are driving this development? NYC is one of the wealthiest cities on earth... there are many NYC natives that have done very well for themselves with business dealings both inside and outside the city. If Donald Trump bought your building and developed it, would you support simply because he was born in Queens and lives in Manhattan?

I'm bringing these things up to help you see the futility of fighting redevelopment with destruction. If you want to do something about it, you need to adopt a more positive message than gentrification, which has already adopted "We make areas nicer, resulting in less crime and increased property values." You could get involved in something positive that doesn't see you directly opposed to gentrification, but supplementing it for the impoverished, working class. If nobody can afford to live in NYC, who will make food, maintain sewers, maintain trains, drive taxis, bounce bars, serve drinks, or what-have-you? I'd seriously consider joining or starting a campaign to increase the minimum wage, because that would have the effect of actually making things better for the poor.

Response to: Gentrification: Thoughts/Solutions? Posted July 11th, 2014 in General

NYC should increase its minimum wage so that people can afford to live there. It could also do a lot more, policy-wise, to provide incentive to get affordable housing in all these new developments. There are laws like that here in MA so it isn't as much of a problem. Whenever a major development is made, it has to somehow also result in a certain percentage of 'affordable housing'.

But, your idea of somehow driving away people that aren't moving there is pretty crazy. Turn the place into a shithole and the only people that stay are the people who literally can't afford to go anywhere else because they're crippled by their poverty, which won't be improved by the place they live being turned into a shithole.

I think you're conflating two problems here that irk you: other people coming into NYC (which is unreasonable and cannot be solved) and gentrification driving the poor inhabitants of a neighborhood out forcibly (which is reasonable and can be addressed). I think if you want to have any success, you should get your neighborhood organized to the effect of the latter and not the former problem.

Because, honestly, I fucking hate New York City but I'd consider living there just to spite you.

Response to: Further Tobacco Laws Passed Posted July 3rd, 2014 in General

I think the real problem I have with this 'long-term' solution is that it's only for Australia. Australia only has 22 million people in it. Every time the World Cup is held, the equivalent of the entire population of Australia dies from tobacco.

It would be more effective if the countries that grow tobacco were to ban the cultivation of the plant. There just needs to be something to replace it that's worth as much. Too bad it'll probably be marijuana over food crops.

Response to: So I got summoned to jury duty Posted June 22nd, 2014 in General

I was just selected on a civil trial a few weeks back. Ended up taking 6 days when it was all said and done. This was one of the more boring cases: a trust dispute. We ended up finding for the plaintiff.

It's amazing how such an inherently interesting thing can be so boring in practice. Watching the legal system work is fascinating, but when you're literally sitting on a bench in silence watching the judge discuss things with counsel outside of earshot and you can't do anything except just wait? Boring.

Plus, it's cool to meet your fellow jurors. Luckily, most of them were level-headed so we were able to come to consensus quickly about our finding.

I recommend you try to be impaneled. You'll grow for the experience.

Response to: Senior discounts are BS Posted June 8th, 2014 in General

Seniors are given a discount because after all those savings, inflation has increased the cost of goods to the point where they need that discount to survive. If you save up $1,000,000, you might think that's enough, right? But in 40 years, McDonalds might be offering the $100 menu because the cheapest things are at least $100. So if you're spending $1k on eating every day, how long until your one million runs out? A little under three years.

Response to: best car Posted June 8th, 2014 in General

"Best car" is such a silly thing to talk about. The whole point of a free market is that "best" can mean almost any attribute of a car: gas mileage (tesla), 0-60 (motorcycles), grip (18-wheelers), top speed (airplanes), ownership costs (Grand Theft Auto), you name it.

The other problem is that nobody takes budget into account. So it's just a pretty silly discussion to have... also, tastes change over time. I would never want a veryon to own... if you ever hit the top speed you need to replace the tires (which cost $30,000 / tire). But I would love to drive any car on a one-off basis.

Anyway, with all that out of the way, I really like the Audi TT quattro sport (or the TT RS). The 420 horsepower it makes is incredible, considering it's produced from a 2 liter, 4 cylinder engine. And I like the form-factor of tiny coupes. Honestly, I would own a cooper mini if it made 300 horsepower. Those cars are fun to drive.

Response to: She refuses to go on birth control Posted April 17th, 2014 in General

It's completely her right to refuse to be on birth control. It does a lot of weird stuff to women through their hormones, and then a lot of other weird stuff to them once they're off birth control.

Keep using condoms and you won't have a pregnancy. Do you know how difficult it is to get pregnant? People who are intentionally TRYING to get pregnant take weeks and months to successfully conceive.

But, that won't help your anxiety, I'm sure. I would talk to her and tell her that her enthusiasm for conceiving a child is actually giving you anxiety. If she is unwilling to understand your perspective, then I guess it's time to consider moving on to date someone else.

Response to: What's the point of femenism? Posted April 10th, 2014 in General

I always love the question "What is feminism?" that follows up with misconceptions about it in order to dismiss its relevance. Here's what feminism is not:
- Exclusively women
- Lesbians
- Hypocritical
- About women being above men

Feminism is a socialand political movement that seeks to advocate for reforming our culture to improve the respect for females and femininity. It's about recognizing that we may make assumptions based on our privilege in society. For instance: as a straight, white, tall, good-looking, young, able-bodied, American cis male; my experience in our society cannot be held up as evidence of society's equality because I haven't been denied opportunities. I am privileged for all of these identifiers about myself. This is unequivocally true: nobody would argue that my life would be easier if I were gay, not-white, short, ugly, old, disabled, foreign, or of a different gender or sex (gender and sex are not the same thing).

Social sciences have statistics to back this up for every conceivable social interaction, but everybody knows this anyway. That's not to say that any of these identifiers areinherently worse than any others, just that no person exists in a vacuum and negative social stigmas crop up when you aren't a member of the privileged class.

So, what does feminism seek to do? It seeks to call attention to these social inequities in order to get people to consider the privileges they are afforded that others may not have and treat them with an according level of respect in order to bridge the gap. It recognizes that social conditioning is vastly important to the outcome of one's life. That historical circumstances are important to understanding the treatment of members of our society.

For instance, why are blacks incarcerated at a rate higher than that of whites? Is it because blacks are inherently more law-breaking than whites? Or is it because our country tolerated institutionalized racism for the better part of 200 years of its history, and still hasn't recovered from the social effects of stigmatizing black youth? [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4a-v2n62C9k] Watch this youtube video for an example of how social norms shape public reaction to crime as perpetrated by different members of society.

So, putting it all together before I get off track, feminism is the general term for challenging these assumptions. Feminists will tend to focus on women being marginalized first and foremost, because women are the largest social minority on earth (despite being 51% of the population). But they are natural allies to other equality movements because empathy is a cornerstone of femininity, but more importantly because equality is a cornerstone of feminism.

Feminism seeks to challenge assumptions like "a man should provide for his family". What if there is no man in the family, who provides for them? What if the family falls outside the traditional definition of family, and why should that group not be provided for? What provisions 'should' be provided? Why is this the social standard when there are other workable ways to do things that don't necessarily glorify the role of men nor marginalize the role of women?

---

Maybe later I'll go through the topic response by response and correct some misconceptions directly, but I think this should suffice for now. Feel free to ask questions.
