Response to: Is Abortion ever wrong? Posted March 28th, 2006 in Politics

Wrong and right are a matter of personal distinction when it comes to opinion. However, when it comes to economic or otherwise well-being related choices, wrong and right is most closely tied to benefits that arise directly from the choice. So abortion is either only wrong if an individual decides it is, or if there are negative consequences for the one who decided to abort.

If law dictates morals, currently abortion is never wrong. If individuals dictate morals abortion is sometimes wrong, and if religion dictates morals, abortion is always wrong. However, if evolution dictates the outcome of our decisions, abortions aren't ever wrong. They weed out the weak--those that are too unstable to feel like they can raise their child or too bothered by the inconvenience of it won't reproduce (in the short term) and therefore won't have offspring and their genes will eventually discontinue.

Personally, I find abortion to be wrong. I would never abort a single one of my children, but I also believe firmly that abortion is a moral decision, and as such has no business when it comes to becoming law or not. People can decide for themselves what is right and wrong. Society needs only step in when it is directly affecting others with their own distinct decision-making abilities.

I know realistically that system doesn't work, but it would if people had only the best intentions at heart. Which they don't, but if we're fantasizing about our ideal governmental model, we might as well theorize what people would best fill that ideal governmental model.

the only thing that I have to argue against your thoughts are the fact that your talking about mainly the otakos or whatever that watch anime, the animation itself isn't all that bad, only depends on wich ones you watch.

I don't care about the animation. It's the style I don't like. Most of the anime's styles are so indistinguishable that I don't like them. Occasionally I can wave some of my minor annoyances with anime's style for the rare occasion that they also have an interesting story other than the typical "must level up and get better at whatever it is this particular plot revolves around."

I like some anime, but not always all of it, but then again I don't like a lot of stuff, like music, you don't exactly reference that all to one group. like there is Rap, Rock, Jazz, Classic, etc, if you don't like Rap, you can't say that " Music Sucks" thats kinda what you are doing, by saying that all anime sucks from what you see on adultswim or whatever, its all a matter of opinion really, saying that all anime sucks is kinda ignorant because you haven't seen all of the anime shows out there...

Oh, I don't think I said it sucks, I think I said some specific things about certain types and other qualifications of anime suck, but I don't think I made the blanket acusation that all anime sucks. Just that I don't like most of it. I'm sure nobody is arguing that my statement is anything other than opinion and personal experience anyway, but trust me, my room mate has extensively explained the many different styles of anime and which kinds he doesn't like.

but yes i do agree with you when you say that the people that dress up in cosplay are rather annoying...

Man, it's the worst. He also has taken up anime-isms. Shit like instead of chuckling he'll go "AUGH--" in that quick, cut-off way of having an initial laugh to indicate that he recognized the joke and found it funny, but not uproarious.

It's a good thing he brought back his facsimile sword though... hoboken? Who knows. It's cool having my suitemate who's a Japanese major here tell my room mate how much he hates most anime though. His main gripe is the translations and the English speaking voices they employ and how they're awful, which could very well be my main gripe, if I didn't find the Japanese voices so obnoxious also.

That reminds me, ever play the awful game Naruto: Clash of Ninja? I refuse to even watch it be played since the game's name translation is so poor.

But yea, this is all opinion basically. Feel free to argue against it, but I not really invested in converting other people to my way of thinking. Just interesting in reporting how anime is killing me slowly.

I figured as much. But then I didn't say anything because I don't like appearing arrogant.

Oops.

I'm tired. Good thing anime isn't on tonight otherwise my room would be HOPPING with a bright TV tuned in to Adult Swim religiously. OH BOY OH BOY THERE'S THE SAME EPISODE OF FULL METAL ALCHEMIST AS I SAW LAST WEEK! GOTTA WATCH IT AGAIN WHAT IF I MISSED A JAPANESE REFERENCE THAT I CAN EXPLAIN IN EXCRUCIATING DETAIL!?

Kind of kills the mood letting you guys know that I'm sitting here calmly at my desk.

It's good that I'm putting this here though. Otherwise it'd be me putting this into caustic words aimed at my room mate next time I'm drunk. And that wouldn't be good.

It always seemed to me that they just kind of switched settings and characters over and over again. Plus there's that really annoying idiotic girl in that one that drives me nuts.

I dunno, I can stand some of it, but most of it makes me want to die.

Example of that which I can stand and perhaps enjoy (when not being told the entire history of every one of the characters, how the manga already came out and is better in Japanese, the update on how long until the next DVD comes out) include Samurai Champloo, and perhaps... nevermind. That's the only one I can think of.

Response to: Anime Sucks Posted March 28th, 2006 in General

It'd be one thing if you backed up your thoughts with something interesting, like a coherent explanation of your reasoning, perhaps maybe some examples of anime doing the purported 'sucking'. For instance, I hate anime because everything about the mannerisms they employ to get their viewers to sympathize with the characters is obnoxious.

Loud squeals, annoying overexaggeration in facial gestures and emotional reactions to puns and other forms of base humor kill me.

It could also be that my room mate grates on me with his endless anime-watching, explanation, mannerisms, and even attire. Seriously, who the fuck wears goggles just for the sake of having goggles on your head? Oh yea, Digimon does. He wears fingerless gloves, and when he's drunk thinks he's a samurai. He even told me once while vomiting all over the place as I stood over him making sure he didn't drown that I was "stronger than he was."

In short: PUT MORE INTO YOUR WORTHLESS THOUGHTS. That way, people will at least give you the 69-like benefit of pretending they care enough to respond to them. Or, even better, someone will actually be deeply offended by you apparent individualism and attempt to set you on the path of riteousness in order to rid the world of all those with differing opinions than themselves.

Yes.

Yep.

Yea.

Yea, my girlfriend is pissed because she is halfway through her second semester and it comes time to officially declare majors, and her guidance counselor is like "Hey, how come you haven't taken a bunch of these courses yet?" My girlfriend goes, "what are you talking about, how could you let me NOT take them?!"

So she might have to take classes over the summer since her advisor sucks.

My advisor blows too. She's a middle-aged Vietnamese woman who doesn't know shit about her job. She suggests stuff to me that is just plain idiotic and unhelpful, and I'm frequently telling her stuff about the shit she's supposed to know instead of the other way around.

It's amazing. I wonder who hires these trolls.

It will blister the roof of your mouth before you'll ever hurt your taste buds in that way. Your tongue is a huge thick layer of muscle and skin, whereas the roof of your mouth is a very thin and tightly stretched layer of skin. So even though the food will hurt, you do more damage to other spots besides your tongue first.

I know because I've blistered the roof of my mouth many times. It isn't fun.

My friends talk to me about Newgrounds more than I mention it to them. One of my friends just recently got to level 10 (he doesn't post on the BBS) and another one of them I just had to let him know that getting the emails with the top 5 every day doesn't give him any points. He asked me if I was sure and I was like "oh yea, POSITIVE."

My girlfriend knows I'm a BBS moderator. My brother certainly knows and is himself a chat operator in the NG Chat.

I'd say that's a resounding no. I was just holding it over my buddy's head the other day that I reached level 16 when he had just hit 10.

I got that deal and I'm living it out here in UMass Amherst. Granted, it's only saving me about 2 grand a year, but that's still savings from what I have to pay if I'm paying tuition.

If I could do it over again though, I'd have gone to a community college for next to nothing for two years, got a huge discount and the tuition waver out here at UMass, and then went to an awesome graduate school. Would've saved myself some money and I probably would be doing much better having eased myself into the flow of college life with easy courses at the community college.

Meh, live and learn I suppose.

Response to: curse you colleges! Posted March 27th, 2006 in General

I didn't feel all that bad about my college applications. I applied to two universities I didn't have any interest at all in, one I thought would be cool if I got in but wasn't sure I wanted to go there, and then two that I was deciding between which I wanted to go to.

I was rejected from the ones I wasn't interested in, waitlisted and later accepted at the one I was unsure of, and accepted at the two I was most interested in.

To be honest, it really really does not matter where you go to school. You should be able to enjoy yourself and get a degree while paying as little money as possible. Sure, some of the networking you get from going to those more well-known schools are great, but if you're an outstanding candidate from one University you can just go to an awesome graduate school to get the same sort of thing.

Check out the "Computer Hospital" thread that deck_head_tottie has running here in the Wi/Ht? forum and make a post telling him the name of the virus (should look something like NNNNNN.exe in your virus scan results), your system information (operating system, system specs, anything you feel would be helpful), your virus scanner's name and any and all methods you've used to try to delete it, and finally what effects you've suffered from this virus.

He should be able to help you, but try to help yourself first, check out some of the virus scanning programs he has linked to in his thread and some of the resources available for finding out information on specific threats and other such niceties.
