Go ahead and watch, the conversation will be meaningless unless you know what I'm talking about.

What are your opinions of this man's space? Could you live like this? Do you agree with his assessment of the needs of the human condition?

Obviously, I think that place is pretty awesome. Great view, everything you need, and it will pretty much always look clean. I really like the smarts to the layout, as well. The way every inch of real estate must serve every purpose it could possibly need to is fantastic. It's safe to say that the only limit on the amount of fine, Barcelonaean tail that man gets (or dude asshole... who knows what he's into) is the ridiculous amount of stairs required to get up there.

19th hour of the day is 7PM. Military/24 hour time is pretty easy to figure out, if it's over 12, subtract 12.

Yea, pretty much that. It's been over 5 years since I loaded a flash entry here on any consistent basis. If I watch a flash movie or play a game here, it's not at a rate of more than once every 4+ months.

That's the factor that I left out this morning. When he goes, there will be little reason to keep my department where I am. There's a good chance the company I work for will fire me on the spot. Not great, but good. They will need someone to wind things down with their clients or to transfer work to other offices, but long term there's no reason to keep me on.

Yea, that's the thing I was missing. I didn't see a compelling reason why you would be fired for staying at the current company, but that puts a good perspective on things. I guess it looks like moving with the next company is the best option, given the situation. See what your future father in law has to say... I don't think it could hurt to seek his advice, especially about transferring jobs like this?

How long do you have to stay at the new company to have earned your 12 PTO days? I would take 12 PTO days and perhaps an extra 5 unpaid days for the Europe trip. That way you have most of your expenses covered, and you still have the full vacation (I'm assuming you've already purchased the tickets).

Unfortunately I have certain requirements that need to be met by whatever job I take. I went to a pretty expensive school, so there's debt to be worried about that I can't just shrug off. And I don't know how it is out where you are Evan, but here there's only so many opportunities for employment, and most of them don't pay nearly well enough. That said, I am going to start sending out my resume tonight.

Yea, opportunities are much better around here, especially in the field I'm in. Information Technology in Massachusetts is a solid field to work in. I already have my buddy trying to get me to leave my current position for an entry level position at his work, but the perks and coworkers here are keeping me loyal.

Anyway, that is all the more reason why you want to start your search sooner rather than later. Ideally, as soon as you hear about the position you are in you were searching for jobs. Also ideally, you have a third option lined up once you're forced to finally make this decision for yourself (it makes it that much easier if you've got the leverage against each choice).

Good luck, man.

They hadn't created profiles because you were originally not required to create a profile (it was worth 20 experience points, however, so pretty much everybody did).

They were called 'vagrants'. Shak3s was the most prominent example, as he was a high-level user with many posts but no profile.

Response to: E-Sports are not sports Posted May 9th, 2011 in General

It is sport. It may not be an athletic sport, but it is a sport none-the-less.

The problem you're having is that you don't see the distinction between a game and sport. A game is a diversion, there are no professionals playing 'games'. A sport is a dedication to said game. You don't see many amateurs become totally successful at any sport.

I used to see things that way as well. But athletic ability is not what defines sport, it is just one of the many mechanics a sport may employ to provide a field of competition between it's players.

Response to: A beautiful rich girl stalks you Posted May 9th, 2011 in General

That is a dangerous situation. I would feel very uneasy and would tread lightly. If she's been stalking you for several years and is gorgeous while simultaneously loaded... she's got some severe self-esteem issues to not make a move on me sooner. Sure, it might be great for a while, but if things went bad her existing obsession with you would likely fester, since you gave her a taste and then decided against it.

Response to: Decisions, got advice? Posted May 9th, 2011 in General

Stick it out with the old company and start making moves for your next thing NOW. You can get your paid days off, not care about a phantom extra $500 over the course of the next year (especially presuming you don't take a pay cut when you move on to the next opportunity), and you won't have your Europe travel plans destroyed or horribly maimed.

Unless there's a factor I'm failing to grasp or otherwise am missing entirely? Seriously though, don't compromise a trip to Europe! I went to Rome and Venice last year and it was so worth the week off without pay that I took (already used my PTO week in the summer to spend it on Nantucket).

Probably much more of the former than the latter. What is the average number that you came up with from all the participation in this thread that has led you to believe everyone is lying? I bet if you actually did the math you would come up with an answer within the statistically acceptable deviation for the sample size.

At the very least, it would give you something productive to do instead of being such a useless cynic.

Response to: How Would You Do Posted May 8th, 2011 in General

Thankfully, I don't require any of those things.

The only real factor in my survivability would be what time of the year it was. I guess it'd also be important how society collapsed in the first place. If much of the infrastructure were still intact, I wouldn't have much trouble finding the things I need to survive. However, if most infrastructure were destroyed and it was winter I would have a lot more trouble keeping myself warm and fed.

Response to: How Tall Are You? Posted May 8th, 2011 in General

6' even. And since the trend has apparently also been for participants here to post their weight, I'm currently sitting probably somewhere just over 180lbs. Ideally, by the end of the summer I'm at 165-170 so my abs'll show. Then I can pack on some more muscle over that. Wide shoulders for the win.

Kind of surprised he didn't tear anything.

The best part was how he was falling to the floor the same way later and was about to catch himself with that same arm, then rolled with the fall and hit the floor on his shoulder instead. Now if the next win can be somewhat close and the road game after that a blowout (with both being Celtics wins) then I feel a lot better about the Celtics beating the Heat.

The Obama administration is just trying to pad their approval ratings for fundraising purposes in the upcoming election. Until I see video confirmation of the kill I do not believe that Palin is truly dead. Besides, it just doesn't add up. How could someone as infamous as Sarah Palin be living in the broad daylight of an area so densely populated with US troops keeping us safe from the imminent threat of such a closely proximate Russia without anyone having been aware previously?

Response to: Do you have an option of not workin Posted May 5th, 2011 in General

No, actually. It is a very rewarding feeling seeing the hard work you put in day in and day out pay off. Both in terms of your life and the lives of others that you have made just a little bit better through your services. I love driving the car I earned back from the job I earned to the apartment I earned to eat the food I earned and drink the beer I earned and then play the guitar I earned. I'm not making much, but I'm making the most of it and eventually WILL be making much.

This is something that very heavily marks the transition from young adulthood to full-fledged adult. You will know what I mean somewhere around age 23 or so.

Honestly, the only reason I have any time to spend on the computer any more is because of my full-time job.

Response to: Cicadas! Posted May 3rd, 2011 in General

We have them here, but they only come out in the HOTTEST days of mid-July/early-August. Every year, actually. The reason why they appear every year is because even though they have a 2-5 year cycle (or a 13/17 year cycle) for maturation to adulthood, there are many different generations of eggs laid every year.

I love hearing them in the middle of the summer. It's a great reminder that we're in the throes of the nicest time of the year up here in the north. Unfortunately, it also means in about 6 weeks it's going to start getting colder.

It IS an island. The full name of the state, Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. It has since been shortened to just 'Rhode Island' because nobody wants to say that full name every time. Originally, the state was two colonies, one on the island and one on the mainland.

I really love how your braggart declaration of ignorance also challenges someone else to set you straight. It's adorable.

Response to: Longest Flight/car Ride You've Had? Posted May 2nd, 2011 in General

23 hours in a bus ride to Florida (from north of Boston, MA to Daytona Beach) back in High School. I wasn't driving though.

The longest I've ever done driving myself was when I returned from a trip to Washington, DC. I drove from there straight through to Manchester, NH. It should've only been a 9 hour trip, tops, but thanks to traffic in New Jershit that drive was well over 12 hours of grueling driving. It was mid-April, too, so the heat combined really unpleasantly with my lack of air conditioning on the NJ expressway.

I also had a 9.5 hour flight from Rome, Italy to JFK airport, NYC. That was tough because you couldn't really move around all that much like you can on a bus with all your friends.

Response to: What's With 5 Letter Usernames? Posted April 29th, 2011 in General

Originality is moot, because each person with a five letter username is part of a limited pool of people that chose something nobody else thought of before. It's a lot easier to come up with something original when you have 6+ characters to work with than when you only have 5 or less. Because there are less options when you have less characters.

I typically have more respect for users with short and simple usernames.
