If you made a thread, clicked 'post it' and it's nowhere to be found, either it was deleted (which means you shouldn't be making another thread until you read and understand the rules), or there's a PEBCAK issue.

At 8/27/08 02:26 PM, StephanosGnomon wrote: It's funny, I only asked him to describe the difference between the two, and he hasn't.

The difference lies in connotative meaning. To say that you lack belief in something is to say that while you can not affirm on faith alone that it exists, you are receptive to all other avenues of proof. Whereas, to say that you believe something does not exist is to say that you believe strongly, against all other persuasion, that something truly isn't there. That any proof is a misrepresentation of fact.

It's the difference between saying "I've never tried apple pie, I don't believe it's good." and saying "I tried apple pie once, I believe it was disgusting." The difference is established as a response to a couple of theistic arguments against atheism, one being the idea that atheists become so after rejecting God from their lives (this argument is strong for theists... a theist could not believe that while they were subject to a supreme being the entirety of their lives that another could have never been).

Personally, I think belief is, like so many other things, a manifestation of the expansion of humanity's consciousness.

I had been doing sets of 20 whenever it occured to me a couple months ago. But I've really fallen out of it as of late, especially since I could never do more than about 40 in a row.

A program like this seems like it'll help, I usually do better when following some sort of pre-determined schedule anyway. I'll give it a go starting in September. I'm wondering if I should totally skip the first two weeks, however and just repeat week 3 a couple times or something. Because week 3 looks like the first workout that'd actually challenge my fitness level. Weeks 1 & 2 would feel like regression.

Topic: I froze a spider. (Pics)

Posted: 08/22/08 02:44 PM

I see I'm too late to explain how cryonic preservation works.

The reason why you're able to preserve people through the process is because you freeze someone so fast that the water in their bodies doesn't have time to expand as water normally does during freezing. So when you freeze something normally, such as a spider, the water contained within the organism's body expands during the process, rupturing... everything. ESPECIALLY if contained within a solid block of ice.

The reason why some insects can be "frozen" and then rethawed is not because the water within their body has actually changed states from liquid to solid. It's because insects don't circulate blood to maintain body temperature. When the world around them gets cold, they slow down until they're unable to function. Putting a bee in the freezer for 10 minutes and then tying a string to it and waiting works because the 10 minutes in the cold slows down the bee and it slowly recovers from it when you return it to the summer sun.

It's cool if the opinion's warranted, but if you're going into a topic about John McCain saying something totally unrelated about how you're not going to vote for him because you don't want a Zombie president... It's hard to tell if everyone's reaction to this as a 'huge mistake' is simply covering for our own lack of interest in a similar scenario for ourselves. I mean... I can't think of a way that your plan is any more of a mistake than it would be were you not going about things in this manner. Were you planning on entering the Air Force before this whole situation arose? Were you with this girl before the situation as well and interested in staying with her a while? If so, I can't think of any reason why this particularly alters your plans anyway.

Good on you for your decision here. I have to say that it humbles me to find someone four years younger than me acting more like a man than I ever have. Good luck with it, man. I hope it all works out for you.

So, not only do you look like a huge pussy for calling out a forum moderator behind an alternate account (because... we don't ban people for having opinions around here... and a true badass such as yourself wouldn't even care about being banned in the first place), but your 'noob' guise makes you look even more foolishly inept. You're signing up and participating in a discussion about the lessening quality of the forums as observed by those who've been here a while? Why are you joining forums you think are full of idiots in the first place?

Seriously. What kind of sad souls can possibly derive enjoyment from such uselessness? I laugh at gimmick alts the same way I laugh when an adult drives their car up to the gas station with the fuel cap on the wrong side. Even harder when they still try to get gas in the car that way. It's funny, but it's also kind of sad that they've been on this earth for as long as they have and they still just. Don't. Get it.

I usually try to put a bit more intelligence or substance in my posts by way of adding some small personal contribution, but it doesn't achieve much, sadly. Most people seem to gloss over posts that are longer than a line or two, so sometimes it feels like there isn't a whole lot of point in putting that extra bit of effort into my posts. :/

The great thing about having the attitude where you're not worried about what others are doing and you're just doing things because YOU'RE capable of making things better around here is that you can totally ignore the idiots posting their one-liners just the same. You're putting in that extra personal snippet because that's YOUR contribution to the forums. YOU want a little bit more here, so YOU are taking the extra 20 seconds worth of typing to add it.

I mean... you guys are on computers all day every day. Are you telling me you can't read a couple more posts in every thread you enter, and post a couple more sentences elaborating on your point? When your posts are constantly coming up short, you don't look like a succinct badass, you look like a terse fool.

Gagsy: Yea, for some reason people think that someone's point can be "invalidated." As if there weren't a grain of truth to everything someone says. They think that by finding fault with one simple thing, or disproving one iota of someone's post, or even revealing an ulterior motive completely destroys the credibility of a post. It's really wierd. Like, the assumption is that people complain about this stuff for attention, but really it's usually they're just crying out for meaningful discussion.

An optimistic spin'll win over pessimistic din.

You guys are whiney bitches. His run-on sentence is totally understandable, I got the gist of what occured within one read-through.

A car of 4 drunk guys crashed into his lawn. When his mother called the cops, one drunken idiot forcibly took the phone from her. When the OP confronted the drunken idiots, one with larger stature tried to stop him. He kicked said hugest asshole in the groin. A third friend brought out a knife, to which the OP responded with the shotgun his dad keeps in the house. After a round being fired into the air, the drunken fools realized they were fucked and stood down until the cops arrived, 10 minutes later. Cops arrested everyone except for the OP's mother, but after questioning realized that the OP wasn't responsible for any illegal activity and was innocent.

Interesting story. Sounds like you had a crazy night. Why did you not respond IMMEDIATELY with the shotgun? I would have brought that bad-boy out from the start if someone had taken the phone out of my mother's hands.

Yea, personally I've got to agree with snayk. Where else can you do a lot of the things you can do here on NG? There's plenty of morons to make fun of, plenty of smart users you can talk with, plenty of artists constantly cranking out new media for your FREE consumption. It's pretty much ALL good.

You only get sick of it because there are actually better things to be doing with your time. But the assumption when you're on here in the first place is that you don't have those better things already, or you're in between better things to be doing.

Like, I'm gonna disappear in about 5 minutes to go for a run, work-out, and then go chillax with friends. But right now I'm enjoying the lazyness that this place offers me, the chance to sit on AIM in case anybody wants to talk to me (I'm too lazy to initiate conversation, typically), and the chance to toss my opinions out somewhere for the world to ignore. Yyyyyeaaa.

When I get sick of coming here, I don't for a while. It's not a difficult thing to do.

Actually, I kinda hate roasts. They tend to not be very funny at all, simply because they're aimed toward a mainstream TV audience, so there's none of the over-the-top and vile humor that most of the comedians who run with Bob Saget are known for.

I watched about 20 minutes of the roast and didn't break a smile even once. Bob Saget deserves a GOOD roast. One that airs on HBO or something with the tv rating of MA.

There's a couple cures. Nowadays it's better than it used to be. Because personally, I've been cruising General at light speed doing much more moderating than participation tonight. So I can dig that.

Anyway, just cruise userpages. Go through the users online list and spam/make fun of the users you dislike and strike up conversations with the ones you do like.

Another suggestion's to just take a break from the forums for a while. Check out some flash, maybe review some, whatever. Or just take a break from the site entirely and get your kicks doing something else online for a while. Almost everyone takes breaks at one point.

The third solution's to make a decently interesting topic like this and hope you attract enough of the people around here who'll make it worthwhile to have a discussion.
