I don't like pointing out problems if I don't have solutions. So here's my suggestions for improvement...some of them, if it were I making the calls, I'd scrap the portal, and work an entirely different GUI from the ground up using the same database, and base that GUI off an alternate system that has proven itself in a time tested environment against a comparable user mass, like Soundclick or GarageBand or the Sony Acid site.

First, force flash artists to use audio portal music. Sure, they can utilize whatever music they like, but that music has to be submitted and approved into the audio portal first. This way, you avoid copyright infringements much more thoroughly, and you improve traffic throughout the site and cooperation between the two portals.

Second, the featured artist is much more important than that silly piece of eye candy asshole robot visualization for the top 5...not to mention the fact that your featured artist should be more important than the top 5 most voted on submissions of the week. Switch the two around. And maybe make it so the featured artist is a voted on sort of deal, with a poll in this forum. That's just a personal thing, I believe much stronger in democratically elected recognition than staff forced to bear additional burdens, like finding a good artist to feature that hasn't been recently.

Best of all time...scrap it. Like Mr. Fulp said in his imaged reply to the box man, its a self fulfilling prophecy, no matter how you spin it. Show the top 5-10 submissions for each genre (one iframe, with a dropdown box to select genres), if any submissions are there for longer than a month, remove them from the capability of being on that list.

Do the same deal with the top submissions, for the most recent submissions (iframe list of 5-10 submissions, differentiated by genre, selected by a dropdown box). This way when I'm checking out new stuff, I don't somehow stumble upon a 13 year old american girls idea of what russian polka should be, and people get longer exposure to the viewers that might actually be interested in their style of music.

Publicize contests. Officially organized or not, contests are a huge fuel for the fire in many musicians in this place, and such should be capitalized on, in the front page. Offer awards for these people, and front page exposure. Notice the and, not or. Front page exposure is everything in this place, because when you get down to it the system is FUBAR, the front page is all that anyone could ever hope for as far as exposure is concerned. The rewards could include anything from multiple votes per day, to displaying a pic or banner in place of one of the ads. Its whatever kind of arbitrary, in house benefit can be mustered, but its something that signifies a since of accomplishment and doesn't eat into the websites revenue, because we all know its all about the benjamins.

That's all I got for now. You do those things, it will make life easier for everyone, except the poor sap who gets stuck implementing the changes.

I mean, think about it...everyone always says the audio portal is here strictly to serve the flash artists, right? But how many really good songs are there on here, even best of all time songs, that deserve to be there, that aren't featured in any flash videos? And how many flash videos, even flash artists, are there in the flash portal that absolutely refuse to use audio portal music? Despite this irreputable fact, you guys are gonna sit there and tell us the audio portal is strictly to serve the flash artists? My ass. The truth is, there are thousands of people that come here, strictly for the audio portal, and twice if not thrice as much just for the flash portal. Whether NG and mr. Fulp want to admit it or not, the two are independent entities. It is irresponsiblility, negligence, and down right fucking laziness that prevents the staff here from giving the audio portal the attention and maintenance it deserves, not some righteous and divine purpose like the fact that its devoted to the flash artists.

NG, like any community of this stature, started out modestly. No one behind the scenes expected it to become what it has. Same goes for the audio portal. But the shit happened. When other communities deny their obligation to their viewers to properly maintain and upkeep the facets of their website, they loose viewers. Mr. Fulp and the NG crew have benefited in this respect from the many series, and re-watchable video content in their flash portal. No doubt, that is and always will be the focal point of the website. But it has become a scapegoat for them to ride out and say the audio portal can be cast aside. You are all...nay, we, are all fools for believing in it and following it and contributing to it for so long. I can't say that if a great majority of the audio artists left this place that it would get any better, I imagine it probably wouldn't. If anything, its condition only proves to me the lack of respect NG has for audio artists. But we would be better off for it devoting our art and our hard work, sweat and tears to some other community that better appreciates us for what we do.

Make no doubt about it, and do not be duped my fellow musicians, this place has neglected you, will not change for the benefit of you, and refuses to recognize your contribution to its visitor flow, and as such has wronged you for it. It's not fair, that we contribute how many dollars in advertisement revenue to this website, and yet they give us nothing...they yield for nothing, saying that we are part of a secondary facet to the primary effect, neither of which seem to completely cooperate with one another. Even in its own mission statement, the website cannot fulfill its dubious purpose. It's a completely arbitrary example of internet community and social environs. You need not suffer it, there are countless alternatives willing to welcome you with open arms and impart unto you a system breeding fairness and proper recognition for talent and influence. This place is made of clicks, who rule it, and trends which fuel it. You need not suffer this horseshit any longer.

Some of thats wrong...but fuck it. You guys know this shit is fucked up or this thread wouldnt be here. And if anyone with any influence or say in it actually gave a shit, stuff might start changing. But it hasnt. The solution is still to go somewhere else, even if I am wrong about a thing or two.

This entire community is screwed up and off in its own little world as far as user/content management is concerned. The audio portal is just one facet of that screwed upness. If you want a real solution, attack the problem at its source, go somewhere else. Tom Fulp seems to be convinced he can run this place differently than any other community of a comparable size in the world.

Threads dedicated to specific topics and kept alive for weeks, months, even years, does not make sense. Posting every single new song in a single list without the slightest hint of differentiation, not even genre, doesn't make sense. Not enforcing any regard or guidelines as to what defines each genre, much less putting them in place, does not make sense. Allowing users to vote on any entry any number of times on any given day, does not make sense.

Essentially, what this place is, is a truth serum for society. We're a bunch of evil kaniving bastards, and this place harbors and displays that perfectly. If you want fairness, go somewhere that's actually managed, rather than one that puts forth a facade of management and lets its users run rampant overtop of one another.

I have proteus x, it came with a midi keyboard I bought a long time ago. I was curious if anyone knew how to route the VST through FL studio other than the traditional way of bringing a vst into fl studio through a channel and whatnot. Proteus has these enormous soundbanks that are based on samples rather than synthesis, and its extremely bulky and heavy on system resources to have multiple instances of it in one fl file. So I was hoping theres a way to route each of the voices I'd like to use in proteus to their own individual channels in fl studio. Any help?

Yeah, it wouldn't exactly be changing the tempo of the pattern, rather just extending the length of the notes to emulate a tempo change...but honestly, if your only changing the tempo of one pattern in the song, its not really a tempo change. Tempo refers to the speed at which the entire song is played...

I cant imagine why you would even want to do that. Seems like it would totally screw up the feeling of the song. If you mean to make one pattern half-time, then just double the length of the notes in the piano roll, and realign everything so they don't overlap one another. Other than that...seems kind of nonsensical, in my opinion.

It all sort of depends on what you want, and what kind of musician you are as to what makes the best investment. If you want it to have its own onboard sound processor and speakers, like with a full workstation, it's gonna cost a crapload. But if all you want is to transmit data to your DAW, then you don't have to spend very much money at all. If you want a full keyboard, like to play out your own melodies as well as harmonies and whatever in between, I'd reccomend these ones:

http://keyboards-midi.musiciansfriend.co m/product/MAudio-KeyRig-49-USB-Keyboard?
sku=700932

http://keyboards-midi.musiciansfriend.co m/product/EMu-Xboard-61-Note-Keyboard-Co ntroller?sku=703635
http://keyboards-midi.musiciansfriend.co m/product/MAudio-Oxygen49-49key-Mobile-U SB-Controller?sku=706311

If you just want to tap some simple stuff out on the keys every now and then, these ones:

http://keyboards-midi.musiciansfriend.co m/product/Akai-Professional-MPK25-Keyboa rd-USB-MIDI-Controller?sku=580886
http://keyboards-midi.musiciansfriend.co m/product/MAudio-Axiom-25-Red-Special-Ed ition?sku=581617
http://keyboards-midi.musiciansfriend.co m/product/Behringer-U-CONTROL-UMA25S-USB -MIDI-Controller?sku=500285

And if you want to go all out and have the most badass thing you can possibly afford, these ones:

http://keyboards-midi.musiciansfriend.co m/product/Novation-61SL-MkII-Keyboard-Co ntroller?sku=523337
http://keyboards-midi.musiciansfriend.co m/product/Yamaha-Motif-XS6-Music-Product ion-Workstation?sku=700828
http://keyboards-midi.musiciansfriend.co m/product/Kurzweil-PC3X-88Key-Performanc e-Controller?sku=703055

Those are some good choices to give you some idea of what to look for. In any case, I'd say the best deal you'll find is on Musician's Friend, or possibly eBay.

See...there are soooo many people in this place, this is how the shit works. Zero bombers come, they listen, they bomb. They dont come back. So stopping them from voting more than once, pretty useless. Allowing the artist to vote more than once gives people a chance to actually save their shit from the bombers. Another plus, people who don't vote in the flash portal all the time, don't have much weight in the voting system. So vote on other peoples stuff...in the flash portal, because you don't get any points for voting in the audio portal, for one reason or another. Plus having friends helps, and if you can get some of those friends to say your song is awesome on any number of levels in a review, people will be intrigued and want to listen to more of your song than they otherwise would.

Three levels of combatance for zero bombers; vote 5's everyday on your shit, vote on lots of stuff in the flash portal, and get people to review your shit. Problem solved. Now...paragonX9 is a girl? What?

Mah guitar is a rogue HH ash set neck. Link. They stopped selling these, which is a damn shame. The price point was around $300, and in that range i haven't played a nicer guitar. It's got a huge range of tonal options, the pickups are very nice. It's also got a fairly interesting neck, it's a bit flat, which is definitely something I like. My only complaint is that i'm not a fan of rosewood fretboards, especially on lower-priced guitars as the wood tends to have a fairly open grain.

I also have an ibanez acoustic that I'm a big fan of. It's nothing special tone or electronics wise, but the action is wonderful. Plus it's pretty.

Squier affinity j-bass. For the price, this bass can not be beat. Less than 200 bucks and it's got solid tone and playability. It's no g&l but it gets the job done.

Amps I've got a roland cube 30x, great little modeling job. Good cleans, excellent metal tone (if you mic it right). I've also got a little pignose which is lots of fun.

Well I think that's all the physical equipment I use. Well, I also have an ev something or another dynamic mic (kind of in the range of the sm58) and an AKG 'hanging' condenser mic that I treat like a standard small diaphragm unit. As well as an old shure mic mixer i use sometimes (wonderful oldschool tone)

Lots of stuff, wow. I'm thinking of getting into recording a wider variety of instruments. I have a buddy whose got a bass and is thinking of investing in a compressor mic with an audio processor package at musicians friend. What kind of software do you use to digitize all that equipment? And how is it you route your USB keyboard through a receiver?

LOL, a PC running a Mac OS running Windows...

paradox

lol yeah, that is kinda funny..heheh. I don't want to have to emulate windows to run my DAW (or anything if I can manage it), so if FL Studio isn't ported to MacOS, then I'll just have to find another one. Garage band seems comparable to FL Studio, though I have very limited experience with it. Otherwise, I'm sure Cubase or Ableton Live are ported to the MacOS. If I have a hard time coming up with a DAW I can work with for Macs, I'll just have to settle for another XP machine...because I sure as hell am not going to use Vista, heh.

As for how to build a hackintosh, Lifehacker (www.lifehacker.com) has a variety of articles regarding different configurations of hardware that are compatible with the various MacOS's and hacks to make them work. The one that interested me most was the configuration that did not require a hack, and had some impressive hardware to boot; http://lifehacker.com/software/hack-atta ck/build-a-hackintosh-mac-for-under-800-
321913.php

I saw the M-Audio Axiom controllers, and they seem awesome. Very feature laden, and the drum pad on the controller is super cool. I dunno if you caught it, but I suppose its important to note, I'm a penny pincher. My controller was super cheap, it doesn't have very many features (just a few knobs and buttons and a pitch wheel that I can't seem to get working correctly with FL), but the truth is I probably wouldn't use them if it had them. All my automation is done in the DAW with automation clips and the event editor. I figure those features on your controller are for performances, and I don't really perform...ever. So, considering its solely for recording, the cheapo alternative works nicely. However, I've often wondered how cool it would be to have a drum pad...heheh.

Questioning

Topic: hardware...

Posted: 08/03/09 08:41 AM

Forum: Audio

I see lots of threads regarding different types of softwares, and which VSTs people like and what DAWs are the most capable...and lots of subsequent posts explaining to the thread starters that such discussions have occurred countless times on these boards before, though rarely have I found any good hardware threads...not that I've spent a great deal of time looking, nor do I intend to...so save your breath if you know of a thread that already exists regarding the subject.

But I'd like to go ahead and ask; what hardware do you use, and how well does it work for you? PC, Mac? Gibson, Ibanez? Yamaha, Korg? Creative, M-Audio? I ask because I have a shell of a PC that I'm thinking of turning into a "Hackintosh" (a custom built PC running a Mac OS). But I'd like to have a handle on what hardware works best with what before I make any major investments. To illustrate what I'd like to know, and how imperative it is I make an upgrade, allow me to showcase what I'm running now;

Computer;
Dell Inspiron 1501 (Laptop)
OS - WinXP64 Home Edition
CPU - 2.0GHZ AMD Turion64
RAM - 2GB DDR2
Integrated Sound
GPU - Radeon Xpress 1150

Peripherals;
MIDI Controller - E-MU Xboard 61
Headphones - Sennheiser HD 202
Monitor/Speakers - Philips 3.1 computer speakers (for the sound of the average sound system)

And thats pretty much everything that's pertinant...I also have a bad ass HD 23" widescreen 20:1 monitor, but I figure thats not important. I'm having trouble with running some things in FL Studio, once my music becomes too complex, it starts skipping and getting all staticy and crap...its seriously limiting me I'm afraid. So the comp upgrade will be a much welcome improvement to my capability, I just want to make sure I make the right investments.
