Should the immediate family (i.e. children, wife, parents) of a U.S. soldier who is serving or going to serve, face deportation if they are illegally in the country?
A professor of Immigration Law at West Point University says such a situation is detrimental to the morale of a soldier. The soldier is already doing the country a favor by putting his life on the line for the existance of the country and he is repaid by having his family deported?
A opponent of the position says military families should get no special incentive or prefferential treatment.
I for one say the opponent on the matter should go out there and take the soldier's place then. Or at the very least, care for the soldier's child while he faces certain doom.

Maybe if things cool down enough N Korea can start becoming a real nation, and we can pull our guys off the DMZ lines.
True, a friend of mine spent 2 years stationed at the DMZ.
A few days ago S. Korea's president met with Kim Jong Il. I noticed there has been no thread about it and was wondering what you all think of this? There are plenty of broadcasts about the event on youtube, some very lengthy, some short. I decided to link a short one: http://youtube.com/watch?v=GroMH9762rU
So... Ahmadinejad comes to the U.S. and enters into discourse with students, Kim Jong Il and S. Korea's president shake hands... what's up with all the niceness all of a sudden? I mean it IS nice for a change. Any thoughts on this event?

It's nowhere near as awesome as making that same trail with your rear tires :P

I find they just can't be bothered. No really I ask my coworkers or classmates and they say they're busy :\ *shrug* Voting needs to be held on a Sunday or Saturday, ALL DAY. I'm sure if they hosted it on a weekend rather than on a day when everyone's busy (like in 04') more people would vote!
So... we need to put some dirt tires on the government?
Lol metaphorically-speaking there's something there. It needs the right setup for the task. In fact it should be only on public roads because a rally's too demanding on it and it will roll-over even with dirt tires. Big like a bus, slow like a bus, and possibly yellow like a bus... I see your metaphor clearly :P
But seriously, back to the topic. Whoever the next president is, they will have a lot on their plate. I can see it now "Barrack Obama cuts education!" or "Hillary Clinton puts a stranglehold on defense and welfare, government weaker than ever!" Oh yes, just as there are people who hate Bush now for leading the country into a senseless war, people will hate the next president for trying to solve the budget problem.
In terms of solving budget problems though... now that I think of it, Clinton did manage to create a notable surplus during his term. I wonder if Hillary would do the same. Obviously though, she isn't Bill but maybe he could give her some pointers even though they don't sleep in the same bed :\
At 10/3/07 10:10 PM, Malachy wrote: first of all, the social welfare programs are a huge expense...
I wholeheartedly agree. Furthermore, welfare is a misused expense. If I had a dollar for every time I've seen someone here in urban Los Angeles abuse the welfare system by simply having more kids to keep getting financial support... I'd have 20 bucks or something like that... But seriously, people who take advantage of the government certainly are contributing a whole lot to the problem.
and in the end all you've got is a broken car, a ruined lawn and one less motorcycle.
I lol'ed. This problem stems from people who, again, rely on the government too much. The president's idea of letting you manage your own money wasn't so bad. I could certainly use the extra cash and store it away in some bonds or stock rather than let it sit there collecting dust or miniscule interest. If the government shed some of its responsibility layers, like a lighter car, it would be quicker and easier to maneuver.

I attended a town hall meeting the other day with the U.S. Comptroller General, that's the guy who balances the U.S's books. The issue he brought up was not one of immediate danger but rather, of impending doom, like a cancer... except with money.
With the retirement of the first wave of "baby boomers" less than a year away, it goes without saying federal expenditures for medicare and medicaid are going to go up. The revenue the U.S. government makes on taxes will not be enough to balance the budget in the long run. A situation where the deficit grows too large could leave the U.S.'s economic health in the hands of foreign investors which might not always be friendly to the U.S. (China & Russia). So, how would the government be able to keep its expenditures in check and create enough revenue to avoid financial starvation? With a string of otherwise unpopular decisions.
Yes, whomever is the lucky winner to be elected president will either be thoroughly hated because they will have to address the oncoming freight train, or thoroughly loved because they avoided a catastrophy. What you can expect your next president to do in regards to this issue will affect just about every aspect of your life. If you look at the links below they contain the Comptroller's presentation (charts and everything) and they show a massive increase in expenditures in the oncoming years and a revenue line unable to keep up. In order to make those expenditures less dramatic and slope the line upward you can expect your next president to do the following:
1. Have true medicare reform (as described in the concord coalition article)
2. Increase taxes, particularly on the wealthy (the rich will really love this)
3. Cut back on education, defense, NASA, etc...
Page 8 is particularly scarry to me because it shows the difference in figures from 2001 to 2007. Pages 9 and 10 illustrate the challenge which lies ahead for the government to curb the deficit.

I just wanted to re-kick off this topic since the issue died for a while after Bush's attempt at Social Security reform was shot down, but the problem still persists and draws ever nearer. Please give the articles and the links a gander and voice your opinions, concerns, etc... but please don't be mean to anyone. Thank you.

I have no idea where my limit is, got close to $2000 once :s I just pay the bill in full when I get it. I didn't mention ways to keep your credit score up because I assume ya'll know them already. But now that you mention, yes paying your bill is the no.1 way of maintaining a good credit score, others include, pay as much as you can not just the minimum, don't cancel credit cards. Yes when you cancel a credit card it hurts your credit score, so the more cards you sign up for, the more you will have to cancel. Also, make sure you know if your card has an annual fee (like capital one cards) because even if you don't use it, they'll still get you every year with that and it'll damage your credit score. Speaking of the score, I've no idea where min is *shrug* and I could care less, as long as I know I pay my dues.

I go by the Sith's "rule of two": one master card and one americanexpress apprentice, no more and no less. But seriously though, the rule of thumb is just 2.
My logic behind the rule of two is if one is not taken some place you can use the other. Then there's always cash, but that comes with its own issues... i.e. laundered money, robbery, no credit, etc..
Now that you mention it, I think I saw a segment on NOVA about The Universe in which gravity's grip on everything loosens when it expands too far and eventually all stars fade. I dunno though, the point is none of us will be around to witness it when it happens.
I just realized I had a message in my NG inbox from some dude called MikeTaken, here's how it reads:
"FUCK YOU MAN

Not only that but religious extremists would probably be adamantly against it saying "you won't get into heaven because you have some mundane animal's entrails in you" or something of that nature; making mountains out of molehills as always.
