Response to: Bolivia Is Falling Apart Posted December 17th, 2007 in Politics

You're forgetting that the eastern regions (the ones trying to secede) are predominantly white, compared to the more indigenous western regions.
I'm not the biggest fan ever of Evo Morales, but these people from Santa Cruz and the surrounding areas are just fucking A.
Sure, they never had a problem with forming part of Bolivia as long as they had a white, aristocratic and oligarchic "president". Some darkie gets elected and he tries to distribute better the wealth of the nation (regardless of how good he's at it) and suddenly it's all "different cultures! we must break away!".

I mean, we're talking about an area where their people tend to identify themselves as "the part of Bolivia where everybody's white, tall, and speaks english". Eastern Bolivia has been historically racist and opressive towards the indigenous population. If Morales, along with 80% of Bolivia's population, were black instead of Amerindian/mestizo, this would be a fucking outrage.

It's like saying "black people probably should stay away from the presidency, since some of them are criminals".
Of course a criminl shouldn't become president, but who's going to elect a criminal into presidency in the first place? Or what party's going to choose a criminal as their running man?

Yeah, I know, all politicians are criminals, son todos naaarcos, etc

A quick skimming through wikipedia reveals this line:

"Unlike many world leaders, Mbeki appears to be at ease with the Internet"

I don't know why, but that made me laugh my ass off. I say vote for the Internet guy.

In all seriousness though, and again only by a shallow fast read of their wiki pages, Mbeki seems like a better choice than this Zuma guy. Even though neither of them strikes me as a perfect candidate (Mbeki strikes me as being too lenient on crime and on his foreign policy, specially relating to that Mugabe fellow; Zuma , well, he just gives the impression of being one sneaky bastard), Mbeki has done a decent enough job and, if there's truly nobody else who's a strong candidate, I guess it's better to go for him than some random guy who could make all the progress made in the last few years go to the shitter.
And re-election limits aren't too hard to get past by, he could call a referendum to modify the constitution, like Hugo Chávez tried to do (and since he apparently doesn't garner as much rejection as Chávez does, he could succeed), or he could choose a "puppet candidate" or some other shenanigans, like, I don't know, hving his wife run instead of him.

Can I be the minion/ henchman/ bad dude whom you know from the first time that he's going to turn good at the climax because he makes a troubled face when the main villain orders him to do something evil? As in:

Villain: Minion! Kill that person!
Empanado: *troubled face* But, sir...
Villain: OBEY!!
Empanado: *kills person*
Villain: Mwahaha, that's great, you're my best minion and you would never betray me.
--CLIMAX--
Empanado: *betrays*

An optional feature is a small but "meaningful" monologue in the middle of the movie where I say something along the lines of "I know that we're doing bad stuff, but in the end we're the good guys... right?". Also, in the middle of a shootout or something, when we're both aiming our guns to each other, one of the good guys will say something cheesy like "you can choose your role... or you can let your role choose you. REMEMBER THAT!!1!!". Then, in the end of the movie after I've shot the villain from behind, the good guys will stare at me befuddledly and I'll say something like "I guess I chose my role now".
After that I can either collapse and die because I had been shot earlier or I can survive and join the good guys in celebration even though it's likely that I've killed about 20 of them or so in the past.

Isn't it? I've always thought of it as a "Religion Expansion Pack". It's basically compatible with most religions if you skip the nontheistic view, which isn't necesarily a quintessential part of their philosophy anyway. Still, religions tend to get pretty messy when they mix so probably it's better to leave them just the way they are and leave the mixing to a reducted group of ageing hippies.

Unfortunately, no. She was pretty hot in college, but all of her daughters are fat. I think.

Although CFK has no experience in the executive branch, she's been in politics since she was in college, and has governed with her husband; I think she's fit for the job.

Well, Bachelet was pretty much unrelated to conventional politics until the mid-90's. She was never elected to Congress or the Senate but she held a couple of Minister gigs during Lagos' administration. When the general public realized that she also happened to be the daughter of one of the martyrs from Allende's government, she got the little boost that she needed to be chosen as a candidate, even though seemingly the original plan was to have her as a stick-up dummy until Lagos could run for another election - which now seems unlikely.

Ah well. To be honest, she did strike me as a good candidate at first, too. And she's still doing it better than any of the shifty-eyed snakes on the other side could do, anyway.

Response to: Cia Using "enhanced Interrogation" Posted December 14th, 2007 in Politics

I don't know if this comes as any help to this argument, but if Wikipedia's definition is correct, then I'm pretty sure that my uncle admitted to have been subjected to waterboarding along with a hefty list of more conventional tortures, y'know, back in the day.

While experiences on torture camps aren't exactly dinner talk, I do recall part of his description. Coincidentally enough, he mentioned a highly uncomfortable bed or bunk, not sure if it was an iron bed but it did cause him back problems for a long while. Then again, he mentioned that for couple of years after spending some months in that lovely place he was terified of bathtubs, swimming pools and beaches. I mean, in practice, he didn't describe it as "kind of like drowning" - it was drowning. He didn't mention anything about being terrified of unconfortable beds, though.
All in all he rated the water thing, along with sleep deprivation (actually preventing him from sleeping), as "definitely worse than the beatings. Except when the beatings involved dogs. Fuck, I hated those dogs."
All in all he said that most things were rendered as "pretty tame" if compared to the electrical shocks and the mock execution, but if you ask me for my two cents, anything that counts as "definitely worse" than a beating can and should be considered as torture.

In fact, the other candidate on the primaries for that coallition also happened to sport breasts and a vagina, and even though she was older and saggier she was much more capable.

Response to: Brazil will pwn Chavez Posted December 14th, 2007 in Politics

Well, it worries me that now they might drop their efforts on what they've been doing regarding ethanol combustibles, I mean, why spend a lot of money in order to get a lot of money when you can simply, you know, just get a lot of money right away?

Other than that, yeah, I guess that as far as South American rulers go, a pretty cool dude with an incredibly stupid nickname who happens to have a shitload of oil seems like a better idea than a rather deranged guy with a Perón complex who happens to have a shitload of oil.

They both have a shitload of oil now, though. Lula might be tempted to cut himself a sligthly bigger slice of the petro-dollars cake, but I don't foresee any serious shit going on in Brazil because of this. The problems that Brazil faces today are these:
- Favelas
- Things located within the boundaries of favelas
- The fact that other than things, there's also people located within the boundaries of favelas

Other than that, they've got a relatively functional democracy (minus the gentle sprinkles of tropical coruption) and for the most part they don't try any funny business. Lula will probably take a path slightly similar to Chávez and spend part of the oil money on social programmes, but since he's not insane those things could actually work.

I mean, meh, they'll probably blow it all off on a couple of gold-plated soccer stadiums and a full equipment of bling-bling soccer uniforms.

That video is bullshit. It's misleading and it never shows what they're shooting at.

And before you say that them ahooting their guns makes the target irrelevant, I seem to recall that the coup against Chávez in 2002 was partially fueled by footage of Chávez crowds firing their guns at an unseen "opposition rally". Days later, a different camera angle revealed that the rally was nowhere near the Chavista militia, which were defending themselves from snipers.
