Topic: Epic Game Collab

Posted: 07/17/09 04:22 AM

Forum: Flash

I am currently developing a game, called Third Strike. Originally, I intended this game to be for the Power of Three event.

However, I think that this can be so much more. Not just a free charity game, but a profitable collaborative effort!

I already have a Voice Actor, and a Musician on board. I am in need for about one or two more programmers and artists. More positions may be available, but only if necessary.

Here is the music for the first level. Other audio hasn't been fully completed yet.

Here is the node-based engine.
Click around, and hold down your mouse button for fun.

The programming tasks is to simply create various individual game-play engines, like the one above. All programming must be done in AS2 (Action Script 2)

The game ties in various game-play aspects into three levels, with an over-arching storyline I have planned.

For those who are willing to give a hand, I cannot guarantee rewards immediately, but I do plan on giving payment, as fair shares from all the profit and revenue received from the final product.

If you are interested, and further details, send me a PM on Newgrounds. Here is my userpage.

Thank you for your time!

I'm starting to get tired of this.

I know how to read very well, but if you or anyone else are still irritated about where a forum post should be, CLICK HERE to help me in the Flash Forum. Or you could still help me here! I don't mind either way... :D

Hey guys..

I'm starting to develop my game for the power of three thing, but I'm running into a programming issue (which has haunted me in every flash game I wanted to make)

I want to develop an army of enemies. I programmed the AI into a movieclip, which in itself will have animation, like running, jumping, slashing; but here's the tricky part...

I want to have multiple enemies, to dynamically be added into the game, each with it's individual AI. I have succeeded in giving the player control to shoot multiple bullets, but they are just bullets, very simple. I don't know how to create multiple enemy objects, each containing their own separate AI.

I also don't know how to make the cloned objects of bullets to interact and hit cloned objects of enemies. Do I have to make the program search through the whole database of objects with a loop to find the right collision interaction?! Is there a better way to do object oriented programming?

This problem has been draining my energy and enthusiasm for developing this game :(

Instead of insulting users, the ads could say:

This is an advertising supported site. Please consider disabling your ad blocking software on Newgrounds!

Hmmm. Seeing these ads getting around the blocked system... They are insulting the user to attempt to make them buy stuff. If this keeps up, I'm gonna have to find a less annoying hosting service >:(

Topic: Third Strike - Power Of Three Ideas

Posted: 05/30/09 07:14 AM

Forum: General

Hey guys!

I have been starting a game for the power of three summer event. Heaps of info and planning can be found on my userpage. However, I would like your input to make this a great game!

The objective is to defeat the incredibly powerful enemy within three strikes, and I thought of two ways of implementing it.

1. You are a captain. It plays like a Real-Time strategy game, where you control your troops, do all the war planning and management. Each strike/ level is completed whenever you finish an objective, such as infiltrating the base, for example.

2. You are an alien entity. It plays like a platformer shooter. Unlike my previous idea, you are actually doing most of the dirty work. You can still have human troops to help you, but it's less management/ strategy, but more interactive ACTION. I like this idea the best.

I'm thinking of having a mix of both in my game, but I'm concerned that it will confuse the player with too much multi-tasking. I'd like to know, what YOU, THE PLAYER would want in this upcoming game.

While I'm here, I'd also like to bring up the issue of money and profits. I'm fully aware of the concept of in-game advertising AND game sponsorship, but I was wondering if anyone has any other nifty ideas for monetizing games.

If you actually read all this, I'd like to thank you for your patience and time :D

After a lot of thinking, I realize that there is something truly wrong with my plan. The website system i have described is like an over-protective mother. It has good intentions and all, but it doesn't treat the artist right, no matter how much I want it to. This is because of all the security precautions, restricting the artist's work to this website. There is also the fact that there are no advertisements to any external site. Only self-advertising. The system is like communism.

The artists have to rely on this website entirely for their business, and can only make specific types of art. This is highly restrictive! Instead of giving them more freedom, like I wanted it to, it will only hinder them. Restricting users, and closing them into a system is NOT a good business practice.

It's amazing. With all the imperfections it has, Newgrounds seems to be the most perfect portal I have found. If I still make a website, I think it'll just be for my personal portfolio :)

The reason why everyone is posting long stuff is because they have something important to say which cannot be condensed into one or two sentences.

I may be repeating myself, but you need to understand, Sovalkov, that this is not some portal where anyone can join. This is only for those who want to do professional art and gain more experience in this field of business. Therefore, the resources that I need to build the site will be smaller.

Right...

Advertising and Popularity CONTINUED
Yes, there will be a bit of advertising for the products WITHIN the website, but I don't wish to advertise other websites. Newgrounds mainly focuses on ad revenue, yes, but this is not newgrounds! Revenue is generated through services and products.

Mainstream attention to this website will also be created through products. I know it's hard, especially when you're starting out. This is why it will just start as my own personal portfolio. Quality products made by me spread throughout the internet and media should create enough attention for other people to follow my example, and create their own accounts. I will try to avoid traditional advertising methods, leaning towards more unique approaches.

Further Stealing
Stealing free stuff is fine, as I mentioned earlier, but what if people steal stuff that is normally supposed to be bought from the store? (This includes DVDs, albums, video games etc) That wouldn't be good for business at all.

Everyone one who wants to buy a product or service needs to have their own account. Similar to Newgrounds, but again, completely different. These accounts will be planned out more in detail later, but I can say that they are the basis for artists to find jobs, place commissions etc... and sell and buy products. When you buy a product, an order is recognized and placed via the account. And the product you purchased will ONLY work with your account information, by placing a unique tag into every copy. You must login to play it.

What if you simply share the account details with someone else? That would be forbidden. If the site recognizes multiple users using the same account on different IPs, it will be punished. A nifty hacker could find a way around, so you don't need to login to play. But the unique tag won't match with anything! It will communicate through the table where all the ids match the account, and it won't find a match! The product will not work. If the hacker tries to remove the id detection system, it's a similar case with watermark-encryption, which I mentioned earlier. Removing the watermark removes important segments in the product, since they are all merged together.

Well, that's about it for now. Let me know what you think!

Very good points noted here, especially from Doomsday-One. Constructive criticism is what makes a good product towards the customer's needs. Now...

Submitting Work
I should mention that all file uploading is free. There will be heaps of free content on the site. It's just that that artist has a choice, whether to release his work for free, gaining views through the site, OR sell it through the store. If you wish to sell it, that's when you get to the business end of things, and you have to pay a fee.

Copyright Issues
Indeed, that is a big one. Most notably, the music industry has been really affected by this issue. The answer is to LET THEM STEAL. As crazy as this sounds, it has it's advantages, especially in the field where copying a file and spreading it to everyone is very easy to do. The spreading of work creates more views, more attention. This gives the artist more recognition, along with the site. It's basically like free advertising, which comes to my next point.

Advertising and Popularity
Sometimes, people who steal work and rip code try to claim it as their own. This is not a good thing at all. The original artist won't get recognition for their work. Though this can be solved!

As I have mentioned, this site gives a plethera of help to developers, and new-starters. I plan to develop a water-mark encryption api for flash developers. This won't stop people from de-compiling, but it will make sure that if they attempt to remove the watermark, the rest of the movie doesn't work. I'm not sure if this will solve the problem entirely, but it's a start.

I will address popularity and more on another forum post in a few hours. I'm a bit busy right now.

I am planning to create a website to host my future complex animations and games, and give tutorials and advice for those who want to go into the entertainment business as well.

HOWEVER, not only do I want this to be my personal portfolio, but for OTHER professional artists as well. Newgrounds is like a flash dump, where anyone can put whatever they want into it. Original projects get shunned. My website will be the exact opposite.

Here's how the system works. There will be absolutely on ads on the website. Not even on the flashes. All revenue required to pay for domain hosting and such is created by selling services and products. Services like custom flash development for clients and more in-depth education (if needed). Professional artists will be able to sell their most quality products (movies, games, music) on the store on this website, however they must pay a small fee for the commercial hosting.
The development and programming? I plan to do it myself to save costs, however, if any web developers or artists are willing to lend a hand, feel free to PM me! If you wish to help voluntarily, HUGE THANKS! You will be given a huge amount of credit and recognition when the site is done. If you wish to receive payment, I can't fully guarantee, because it depends whether your not your work is good enough to make this project work. Though, if you manage to do it, you shall receive a worthy percentage of payment from the revenue I receive, until I have completely payed for the hours of service you provided.

Now, this is where you, the reader, come in. I need to know what other people think of this idea, and what they would like in a proper art website. What audio submission services would musicians like? What tutorials would new-starters want? Things like that. I need ideas to shape this website into the perfect art portal.

Also, if you read all this, I'd like to really thank you for your patience and time!
