Forum: Flash

So the gameplay for CF2 is pretty much done and we're finally starting to think about sounds, and this is where you come into it.

The characters in CF1 were a bit lifeless, and as part of our effort to give them more character this time we want to give them a more varied range of sounds as they react to the gameplay, which means voice acting! We've split up the voices into 5 'personalities', and the sounds into 7 types.

The personalities are:

Kids
A cartoony kid's voice, think Nes and Ice Climbers from Super Smash Bros. Might want to get younger brothers/cousins to have a go at this one.

Snide Male
eg. Waluigi, Murdoc from The Gorillaz etc., this will be for the bully characters, the scientist and the ghost.

Generic Male
Just a generic male voice, like Fox and Captain Falcon from SSB.

Gruff Male
This will be for the pirate, farmer and builder, so it shouldn't be too specific to any of these (no Yarrrs, ooh-arrs etc.)

Animal
Growly and snarly, think lions, tigers, bears, zombies.

And the sounds we need for each personality are:

Small grunt (eg. hah!, huh!, rg!)
This will be for regular kicking/punching. These should be short and punchy (lol.) no more than a fraction of a second.

Big grunt (eg. Haaaaa!!, Rrrrraaaah!!, Yaaaaagh!!)
For more powerful 'rage' attacks (like special moves in Street Fighter/Tekken)

Get hit (eg. oof.. ah.. ng..)
Again, short and punchy.

Die (KO'd) (eg. aagh!, no!)

Fall off ledge/hit a long distance (eg. Aaaaaagh...!, Noooooo...!, Waaaaagh...!)

Sneaky laugh (eg. heh heh, heehee, *chuckle*)
When players pick up a crate, blow someone up with a mine, hit a switch etc. Maybe a bit like in Worms.

Happy (eg. Yeah!, Haha!)
Get a multikill, win the match etc.

We would need several variations of each of these sound types for each personality. (4 or 5 grunts, 4 or 5 deaths etc.)

We can't offer any money for the clips we use, but you will of course be immortalized in the credits for the game and be the envy of all your friends. So if you have a microphone, start playing around, have some fun, and send the results to me at neo42_40k@hotmail.com. Bear in mind we are more likely to use good quality recordings, also don't bother with additional effects (reverb/echo), we'll add them later if necessary. However if you want to shift the pitch, that's fine.

Thanks, -George Eade (EON)

The internet cares. People who pass off other people's work as their own are the kind of pathetic talentless losers the flash community could do without. Thankfully such people often aren't taken seriously, like this guy.

There seems to be a lot of confusion about this game. From what I gather it was stolen and put on NG by a guy called RockmanZ90, and was then blammed. Following the links to the authors' sites (Tagemi Games and Freaky Tiki) from the right-click menu, the game does seem to be on the sites, but with an Addicting Games splash screen. However, the game doesn't even appear on Addicting Games' site. This is a great game and it seems a shame there's been so much controversy around it. Does anyone have any more information?

Posted: 08/23/08 10:17 AM

Forum: Flash

I mean just create a rectangle with a linear fill, say black to white, then make another keyframe with exactly the same shape and fill, and shape tween them together. Export the movie and see what happens. It seems to make the linear fills into radial fills for the in-between frames. I think this only happens in Flash 8.

Forum: Flash

This is getting annoying. In flash 8 when trying to make a shape tween between two objects with simple linear gradient fills, it converts the linear fill to radial fills after exporting the movie. It seems like such a basic bug that I'm wondering if it's just to do with my copy of flash.
Have a go now, does this happen with anyone else?
Apologies if a similar thread has already been started.

Works fine through a browser just not on my desktop or by testing the movie in flash. It's nothing to do with my firewall and I can't find anything in the security settings..

That works fine for user-defined functions, but can the same be done for pre-defined functions in AS2, for example the draw function, instead of saying

myBitmapData.draw(this, myMatrix, myColorTransform, "normal", rectangle)

can something like

myBitmapData.draw(this, default, default, default, rectangle)

be used instead, if you only want to define the rectangle parameter?

Topic: Function parameters

Posted: 06/19/08 06:08 AM

Forum: Programming

This seems like a pretty basic question but I can't seem to find any obvious solutions.

Say we have a function, f (a:Number, b:String, c:Boolean) and we want to call the function, but only define parameters a and c. Is there a way of doing this by calling the function and only making reference to a and c, ignoring b, ie having only two parameters in the function call?

One way I tried that seemed logical was to call the function like so: f (a:123, c:false) (rather than f (123, undefined, false), leaving b blank.)

The reason I'm trying to find this out is because functions like draw() can be a pain if you want to set only the final parameter leaving the others as their default values, as you have to create empty default objects for all the other parameters first to get to the last one. It would be helpful if there was some kind of 'default' value you could use, rather than defining your own default parameters.

Anyway, one workaround I figure out for user-defined functions was to have just one parameter for the function which is an object, and then for each function call just create an object with only the necessary values set, eg:

function f(x) {
trace(x.a)
trace(x.b)
trace(x.c)
}
obj = {a:123, b:"omg", c:false}
_root.f(obj)

then the function f() can refer to any of the variables in the object in any order, without the user having to define each individual variable that the function might use.

If anyone has a similar solution for pre-defined functions such as draw() then I would really appreciate the help.

So I'm trying to get a PHP script to return the URL of the swf using the sendAndLoad method to call the script.

I've tried using $_SERVER['HTTP_HOST']; but this only seems to return the host of the PHP script, not the host of the external swf calling it.

Any ideas on how to get the URL of the external swf calling the PHP script? This is for a secure flash/php-based scoreboard in case you hadn't guessed.

Topic: Crackling/popping In Fl Studio

Posted: 03/01/08 11:53 AM

Forum: Audio

For years I've been frustrated by the inevitable crackling that occurs in Fruity Loops when there are a lot of channels and events in a complicated mix, and I've finally found the solution to prevent it here:
http://www.freelists.org/archives/fruity loops/10-2002/msg00105.html

Basically, the buffer length needs to be increased which allows FL more time to process the mix when streaming it back.

Go to Options > Audio settings and then drag the 'Buffer length' slider up to about 100ms. Increase it if you're still getting crackling.
The disadvantage of increasing the buffer time is that it increases the lag when tweaking knobs and faders etc, but experiment until you get a good ballance.

Topic: Graphics cards for Valve games?

Posted: 01/08/08 07:42 AM

Forum: General

I, like most people, have been counting down the seconds for over a year for the release of Valve's Portal. So needless to say, when I found the game would only run at about 4 fps on max resolution on my PC, I was slightly pissed off. I've tried everything, reducing the game quiality, updating drivers, but nothing makes much difference.
I have an nVidia 256MB GeF 7300GT graphics card. I know Valve recommends using an ATI Radeon card, so this might be the problem.

So what I'm asking is for anyone who has Portal, or any recent valve games, to say what gfx card they have, and how well the game runs for them. I'm doing a bit of research before I buy a new card.

I finally did mission 4! <:'D Upgrading turrets really is the way. Don't spend too much time mazing earlier on, only extend the maze when you need to later. Instead, start upgrading plasma turrets 4 or 5 times to light blue. They take off like 50HP/shot, and they fire a lot faster too. Build a few plasma turrets in a small area and max them out as soon as possible, and put plenty of sonic turrets and freeze turrets near by to hold the xenos in place while the plasma's take care of them. I managed to take out most of the level with this one little arrangement, which you can see in the top half of this screeny:

I recently bought vista, seduced by the pretty interface and assumption that they might be able to come up with something infinately better than XP in the 4 years they made us wait, and was horribly dissapointed. Aero was fun, for about 5 minutes, until I switched to the Vista basic theme because aero was so stupidly laggy.
Did anyone else have the problem in flash, when you double click a MC to enter it and it takes about 30 seconds for it to expand? I mean what the hell.
