Topic: Crackling/popping In Fl Studio

Posted: 03/01/08 11:53 AM

Forum: Audio

For years I've been frustrated by the inevitable crackling that occurs in Fruity Loops when there are a lot of channels and events in a complicated mix, and I've finally found the solution to prevent it here:
http://www.freelists.org/archives/fruity loops/10-2002/msg00105.html

Basically, the buffer length needs to be increased which allows FL more time to process the mix when streaming it back.

Go to Options > Audio settings and then drag the 'Buffer length' slider up to about 100ms. Increase it if you're still getting crackling.
The disadvantage of increasing the buffer time is that it increases the lag when tweaking knobs and faders etc, but experiment until you get a good ballance.

Topic: Graphics cards for Valve games?

Posted: 01/08/08 07:42 AM

Forum: General

I, like most people, have been counting down the seconds for over a year for the release of Valve's Portal. So needless to say, when I found the game would only run at about 4 fps on max resolution on my PC, I was slightly pissed off. I've tried everything, reducing the game quiality, updating drivers, but nothing makes much difference.
I have an nVidia 256MB GeF 7300GT graphics card. I know Valve recommends using an ATI Radeon card, so this might be the problem.

So what I'm asking is for anyone who has Portal, or any recent valve games, to say what gfx card they have, and how well the game runs for them. I'm doing a bit of research before I buy a new card.

Does anyone have any idea how the screen dimming effect is acheived when 'watch this movie' or 'play this game' is clicked in the portal? Any pointers would be much appreciated.

I finally did mission 4! <:'D Upgrading turrets really is the way. Don't spend too much time mazing earlier on, only extend the maze when you need to later. Instead, start upgrading plasma turrets 4 or 5 times to light blue. They take off like 50HP/shot, and they fire a lot faster too. Build a few plasma turrets in a small area and max them out as soon as possible, and put plenty of sonic turrets and freeze turrets near by to hold the xenos in place while the plasma's take care of them. I managed to take out most of the level with this one little arrangement, which you can see in the top half of this screeny:

I recently bought vista, seduced by the pretty interface and assumption that they might be able to come up with something infinately better than XP in the 4 years they made us wait, and was horribly dissapointed. Aero was fun, for about 5 minutes, until I switched to the Vista basic theme because aero was so stupidly laggy.
Did anyone else have the problem in flash, when you double click a MC to enter it and it takes about 30 seconds for it to expand? I mean what the hell.
Vista makes me cry ;_;

Forum: Audio

I have this problem occasionally too and I've been looking into it a lot with Tom. I gave him the results of my findings but nothing's come of it yet. He might look into it more in the AP redesign. It's nothing to do with the file, I've submitted the same 'blank' track with two different accounts and sometimes one works and the other doesn't. Bizarly it's something to do with the ID3 info attached to the file. That is, the track title and author etc. If you're going to resubmit a track, try giving it a different name.

btw this has been discussed a lot of times before, do a search to check a similar thread hasn't already been started before you post. Here's one I started earlier.

It wouldn't make sense why it would. It's a flash that runs off the Newgrounds music, it's not a real radio station.

And it wouldn't make sense for you to 'quote' that on account of I didn't say it.

That means hopefully not RadioGrounds, and Certainly not the radio, as in.. it won't affect the radio.

And sorry if I didn't make it clear, but the stations won't be "shut down", they will just go out of business because they won't be able to afford the increased royalty fees.

Update: we now have 14 days 10 hours 14 minutes and 44 seconds.

*appologies if this has already been mentioned*

On July 15th 2007, due to ever increasing royalty fees for internet radio broadcasters, many (if not all) american internet radio stations will be shut down.

Appeal to your congressional representatives by visiting this site: http://www.savenetradio.org/.

Hopefully this will not include RadioGrounds (and certainly not the NGAP Radio), but do anything you can to stop this ban happening. Don't let the music die!

July 15th is also my birthday. Best present ever :(

I'm making a punk rock remix of the folk classic 'Streets of London', and I need a singer.
Check out the backing track so far here .
If you wana give it a go, send me a sample of your singing to jorjeade@hotmail.com.
(Alternatively, any suggestions on how it could be improved are also welcome.)

btw, I'll set the final track as the default song on the NGAP Radio if it turns out well, so let that be an incentive :)

For those of you wondering if there is a solution to those mysterious 'blank' audio preview buttons, basically there isn't. That is, Tom doesn't know why they happen, so I'm guessing no one does. In his words: "Bummer, that's such a strange bug..."

Posted: 04/10/07 05:32 PM

Forum: Flash

Ok, so any port above 1024? Do you need to set the server up to receive from that port too or do you only need to specify it with flash?
Also, if I wanted to be able to play games like Stick Arena on my network, would I just need to find out which port it used and have my admins open that specific port? there's no way to automatically allow any port flash specifies?

:Chaos faction is good as it is...

..well ok, then only the hunderds of people who have suggested it can play it. Obviously it would be a simplified version etc.
But to GustTheASGuy, I know you can select any port to connect to, so does that mean the ports used in the multiplayer games such as WoW Flash chat, Stick Arena etc. just happened to be ports blocked on my network? Surely there must be a basic port that flash player uses for sockets. Yeah ok I'm a total noob at networks so throw me a bone here.

Does anyone know the port number flash uses for XML sockets? Or am I asking the wrong question?
Basically my network at Uni doesn't allow flash to connect with XML sockets and I want to know which port to ask my admins to open for me.
This is in preparation for Chaos Faction multiplayer btw.
Any help appreciated.

I don't know if anyone else is having this problem, but sometimes (2 in 32 for me so far..) after submitting a track, I find the preview button doesn't work. That is you press it, it loads for a while then shows the stop sign without playing the track.
Is anyone else having this problem, and does anyone know why it's happening?
