I'm not saying a better system wouldn't be beneficial, but I have no idea how exactly the current system works and what it would involve to improve it.

good point, but I think we need to look at it differently. Like, for instance, when were the times that people came flooding to Newgrounds? They were during the internet crazes (Numa Numa, Charlie the Unicorn) controversies (Target Practice, Virginia Tech Game) and pretty just when Newgrounds had something that caught the public eye before all the other websites had it. After that they left, dismissing Newgrounds as a place that got lucky, but didn't really have anything else to offer. I mean look at our Top 50, it's full of flashes relating to the site and then there's a bunch of artsy stuff.

People out of Newgrounds will come in, watch flashes like Tankmen and be like, ha that was pretty good, I wish there were more like. No one who doesn't use the site is familiar with or wants to take the time to use the search bar for related stuff. The things that keep people from leaving after they've been drawn in are these 'hidden treasures' we keep talking about on here. We need a system will say "Oh you liked NSFW's The Miracle? Why not try Schiendlin's Reign then? Or Lost Rhapsody?" I think it would basically help people see more of what they want to see without having to go through all the effort. Newgrounds will remain the same in principle, but to the audience will become more like youtube than addictinggames

Many of the SWF to Video converters never work. It would be best to get a screen capture program and record the SWF file. Try using the trail version of Camtasia Studio.

I might have to disagree there. Unless you're trying to convert something that's protected, it should be alright. I've talked wiht Adam Phillips about this concerning Waterlollies. What he's done is used
FlashAnts Swf to Video so he could get Waterlollies onto Youtube. The result is quite remarkable. He talks about it more on his Bitey of BrackenWood Blog.

On the other hand, I've found that it's sometimes difficult to get the settings matched up the way you want it. Also, they're are some sound issues. Overall it's great if you export the .swf as a sequence of .pngs and string the images and external audio back together in Adobe After Effects

My preferred software is Moyea .Swf to Video Converter. Adam tried this and told me he found some dropped frame issues. I don't know if he was being nitpicky (though of course he strives for the best quality so each dropped frame is like a dagger) but I found no problems when converting waterlollies.

So yes there is software, but it's very dependent on how you use and what kind of flash you have.

Haha, yeah Tom, out of all the controversy you've put newgrounds through (virginia tech shootings, clubby the seal, target practice) you could have done nothing more extreme than get some revenue from the army.

Btw, does the army really expect me to get up from my perfectly comfortable bean bag chair to get some fresh air in Iraq?

Newgrounds Recommendation System Posted February 24th, 2008 in Programming

I don't know the first thing about programming, but I'm always interested in what makes the internet such an efficient machine. In particular, I've always wondered about the algorithms of searching, the ones that have made Google, and Netflix the powerhouses they are.

I mention Netflix not really because of their great recommendation systems, but for their intense use of crowdsourcing for making a recommendation engine that is 10% better than their current system. Those of you familiar with the NetFlix Prize probably know where I'm going with this. This whole thing was brought to my attention by the article "The Netflix Challenge" in this month's issue of Wired.

Hopefully you are all open to the idea of a bigger newgrounds community. I'm not talking massively large, Newgrounds wouldn't be Newgrounds if we opened it up like that. I'm talking about people who are seriously into quality animation, but don't have the resources or time to mindlessly wade through the flash file system.

I think the Recommendation system at Newgrounds isn't being utilized to its potential, and I think the reason is because it has been engineered to its fullest potential. Yeah sure we can all see how Waterlollies can lead to the likes of The Composer, There She Is, and Metropolis, but it's kind of ridiculous that my most popular submission, a soundboard, get recommendations like Interactive Buddy and Dress My Babe.

I don't want to go into much more detail until I get a few responses because few people will read a whole speech. But I think the future of Newgrounds lies in the Recommendation System. Ideas?

You are earning money on someone else's copyrighted, non-licensed work. Music companies are more eager to tackle games that use their content, even moreso than animation due to the usual financial variable. I would advise you to choose a different song.

yeah this is question about sponsorships and copyrighted music. Anyone here experienced with sponsorships, I'd like to know if you can still get a flash sponsored if it has copyrighted music, specifically "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen is in my flash, I just want to know if it's possible because I don't want to have any future issues. thx.

Cmon man. Do it.

Let's take a quick moment to look back on the life, shall we?

It was the bare bones year of 2004. The Newgrounds Community was just waiting for something big and exciting to happen to put them on the map. But no, this was months before the Numa Numa craze, back in the days when the simpler pleasures of being a problem of the future in the present day could be enjoyed without the worry of such trifles. The day finally came (mark it) on April the 17th when the Wizard of Newgrounds stepped out from behind the curtain in order to restore calm to a situation which well could have turned into internet rioting.

What Just Happened?

We salute you on this day Tim, may you're journey to the land of 100 posts be blessed with the sounds of chirping birds, the laughter of children, the whir of unstrained processors, and the splashes of freely flowing servers in the babbling brook that is the internet. Cheers!

your opinion on all counts, but you should know that scantily clad women are the only option since this is based off the heavy metal magazine cover which features solely scantily clad sexy women.
Yeah so anyway don't be afraid to critique. The appeal to the general public in my mind is just as important as the appeal to the contest judge.

the girl is great, matches well with the magazine style. The dragon in the background could use some work. I'd think to have it so close to the girl, it'd be better to make the head have a little bit more detail and depth with the scales. Right now it just kind of looks like the dragon got hit in the face with a tennis racket.

Hey, not to sound like I know anything or anything, but since most likely people are using reference images, is it legal under fair use to compete for a prize without crediting the images' creators?

Pwnd By Well/dead Chicken Combo Posted February 19th, 2008 in General

A devastating event has been brought to my attention about a woman who tried to rescue a dead chicken from a well.

http://www.thelocal.se/10010/20080217/

"Woman dies trying to rescue a dead chicken"
Published: 17 Feb 08 09:44 CET
A 63-year-old woman died on Saturday night after falling down a well while trying to fish out a dead chicken. The accident occurred near Ed in Dalsland in western Sweden.
According to local police officer Patrik Ahlbom the woman was trying to fish out a dead hen from the well when she fell in herself. The woman fell 2-3 metres and probably died immediately, Ahlbom said. The 63-year-old was found by her husband.
The woman was taken to Dalsland's hospital in Bäckefors where she was confirmed dead.
Ahlbom reports that the woman's husband suffered from shock following the accident.

It was meant to be interpreted as a complex allegory for the incompetence that ensues in our everyday lives. By simulating, to best of my ability, the situation where one sets up NG the bomb, as I am sure will occur someday soon, I have in effect drained your souls of incompetence, and therefore all the deficiencies that make the human mind so very weak.

How does a microphone 'burn' out a motherboard? What do you mean by burned out anyway?

i don't know that what the comp guy said. WHat happens is that when it's plugged in too long all the usb that I had on the front stopped working. That's what I mean by burnout.
