First of all, ugh. If that doesn't make everything I'd been trying to talk about in this thread clear as day then I don't know what does. Thank god they caught him before he did anything.

Second of all, this was at the University of Washington, not Washington University. Washington University is a completely different school in a completely different state. I know this because that's my school and you nearly gave me a heart attack haha.

Yeah, that's a bummer. It's also why I love Adventure Time's willingness to feature guest directors with wildly different styles. David O'Reilly and Masaaki Yuasa's episodes were some of the most visually bonkers things I've ever seen on an American animated show. I hope they continue to do those in the future (not that he would ever do it in a million years but wouldn't a Don Hertzfeldt Adventure Time episode be fucking insane?).

and have Nick and Disney look at CN and start taking some freaking notes.

Well Disney certainly has. What are Gravity Falls and Wander Over Yonder if not clear efforts to emulate CN's creator-driven model? I think they also have some sort of development deal with Matt and Mike Chapman of Homestar Runner fame, which, holy fucking shit I can't even imagine.

Nick on the other hand is in a much more dire situation. Producing new shows costs lots of money, airing reruns does not, and right now literally nothing they program will get higher ratings than a Spongebob rerun. So cultivating new shows clearly isn't a priority for them. Of course in the long term the Spongebob bubble has to burst sooner or later, and if they don't have something new to take its place when it does they're screwed.

Meanwhile the past two seasons of The Legend of Korra seem to have proved that Aaron Ehasz must have been the secret weapon of the original series, because in his absence the show is a fucking mess. As always the trailer for the new season looks amazing, so let's hope this is the year they finally get their shit together on the story end. And it is to Nick's credit that they continue to put so much support behind such an ambitious and (probably) expensive show.

All of 'em. This is a goddamn golden age.

Srsly tho, Rick and Morty was the best show of any kind on TV this year. Adventure Time was the best show of any kind on TV last year, and aside from maybe Louie it's still the most experimental show on TV.

Bob's Burgers is fantastic. Gravity Falls and Clarence are great. Archer and Regular Show and American Dad continue to be solid. Steven Universe is fun and only stands to get better as it finds its footing.

I can't remember the last time there were this many great animated shows on TV.

Haha, what? That's Al's self-pitying narrative about himself but the whole point of the show is that really they're all assholes. That's what makes it fun!

I think my favorite part of his character is how he reminds everyone about the time he scored 4 touchdowns in highschool and won the championship game. It really reminds me of how people see certain things as the highlight of their lives.

I think that's just supposed to clue us in to how much of a fucking loser he is.

I realized if the show was released today in this day and age, then it would be way too controversial.

I don't know how relevant it would be now because the kinds of family sitcoms it violently tears apart aren't really around anymore, but yeah, the broadcast networks now would never air anything so gleefully cynical and mean-spirited (that isn't produced by Seth MacFarlane).

I think It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia is somewhat similar to it in spirit, though it's more of a riff on the friends-as-family sitcoms that became more popular in the '90s and '00s.

Huh, if anything my (very, very slight) beef with GoT's popularity is the other way around. For the past 50 years nerds have been laughed at and harassed for reading fantasy and sci-fi novels/playing RPGs/whatever and obsessing over the mythology and minutiae of these fictional universes, but now that it's a sexy, violent, popular HBO show it's totally cool for anyone to gush about lines of succession and White Walkers and Valyrian steel and so on. Hmmph.

Response to: Women are always right? Posted June 16th, 2014 in General

It's based on the hoary sitcom cliche of nagging wives and bumbling husbands. The line is used by hacky comedians to suggest that women are irrational, hysterical harpies waiting to pounce at the slightest provocation, so all a guy can do is shrug and humor her the way you might humor a small child, it's not like her concerns really matter anyway. The "humor" comes from this apparently being a "relatable" situation to the braying jackasses in the audience.

The line is meant to be condescending and insulting to women, not men, so y'all can unbunch your MRA undies.

Response to: Senior discounts are BS Posted June 8th, 2014 in General

Senior discounts exist for the same reason student discounts do; because the vast majority of their recipients can't work full-time and therefore have limited disposable income, but they still want/need to buy shit and do stuff like anyone else. Are seniors (or students) entitled to a discount everywhere they go? No, but it's a smart decision for businesses to make because it attracts a demographic that might otherwise not be willing or able to spend there.

You're vastly overestimating the amount of money most people manage to save for retirement and how far that money will get them. People who rely entirely on pensions/social security are living on a very fixed income and by and large have nowhere near as much spending money as they did when they were working.

Plus there's just the cultural matter of respect and care for the elderly, which isn't going to change regardless of which generation had a better job market.

Nah. The constant malapropism-based humor can get pretty grating, but other than that this was a pretty solid and groundbreaking show. I like how the adult characters always have their own plots and problems and shit going on, it makes them seem more like real people instead of just being adjunct to the kids like the adults on most shows like this.

I also have to appreciate the show for featuring what remains to this day one of the best (one of the only?), most thoughtful, least stereotypical or tokenized depictions of Jewish life on television. It kind of meant a lot to me as a kid to see a show I watched devote entire episodes to Hanukkah and Passover, and now I can't think of a single other show that's done it before or since.

Did anyone see that last episode? Damn! It seems like things could wrap up and end with this season or have just one final season. I'd be fine with that. No need to drag a good series along like that.

Even now I'm getting a little worried about all the mythology getting stuck up its own ass. So far the show has always made sure to put character first, though, so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.

@Dr-Worm got his fix of Alison, I'm sure, after her presence was a little bit scarce for a bit.

Yeah, and that's the really insidious thing about these groups. They co-opt the language of social justice to give themselves the appearance of a legitimate civil rights movement, and it confuses and tricks people. Which of course makes it all the more important that we expose them for what they really are whenever possible.

but when people are arguing for it as movement, at least show them that feminism already fights for those things and try and convince them if they really are just annoyed about the inequal things a man might face but made the mistake of choosing the wrong banner to fly for it.

Right. I think I've tried to do as much in this and similar threads.

Okay, first of all just take a couple deep breaths or something. Your grades as a high school freshman really don't count for much of anything in the long run. Obviously you should still try to do your best, but my point is that it's not worth stressing over as if getting a bad grade will ruin your life. Take this time to learn how to study/manage your time better so you'll be less stressed once things actually do count.

And grades are all my parents care about. My father is a genius and he always compares himself to me. He was top of his class and got straight A's in highschool. I could never possibly compare to him. He's just smarter than me, and I hate having to compare to someone I can never possibly match.

Have you tried talking to them about any of this? I'm pretty sure your parents care more about your mental well-being than they do about your grades.

As for your dad, obviously I don't know the particulars of your situation but unfortunately that's just something parents sometimes do, often unconsciously. Again, have you tried seriously talking to him about it? I think if you did you may well find that you're putting more pressure on yourself than he's putting on you.

Everything seems like it has a deadline. I always need to worry about time, and it always seems to be against me. It's just stress piled on stress piled on stress. I hate it. And that's all anyone ever talks about. "You have until May third to hand this in, there's a test tomorrow, you have three hours to study, you have a minute before the quiz." It's like I can never be without worry of a ton of deadlines right in my face that I can barely reach.

Well honestly it's not going to get any easier. People get through the day not because they don't have deadlines and stresses to worry about but because they've learned how to manage them. That's what you're doing right now. It's okay to feel overwhelmed because your only job right now is to learn. It's okay because the consequences you'll face for failure are just bad grades and disappointment, not starvation and homelessness. But by the time you get to that point you'll be much better equipped to deal with shit.

And honestly adults get overwhelmed like this plenty of times too, but again, you eventually learn how to manage it. And part of learning how to manage it is learning when to stop being so hard on yourself, to take a few breaks, to relax.

And for the past year, I've been trying to lose weight to no avail. I want to lose twenty pounds, but I can never pull it off. My house is just filled with sweets and food, and I have awful self-control. I always feel fat and ugly and I can never be complacent with myself.

Again, have you talked to your parents? If you let them know you're trying to lose weight then they can work with you to make sure you only have healthy food in the house.

And do you exercise? Because eating right alone probably isn't going to cut it. Besides, exercise releases endorphins and helps to relieve stress/depression. Or so I'm told at least, I've been dragging my feet about this too.

I really don't see the point of living anymore. It's like, if I kill myself I'll finally be without stress and free. I won't need to live a shitty existence where I hate everyone and my grades are going down the drain. I won't need to compare myself to anyone or live up to unrealistic expectations set by others.

Being stuck socially with a bunch of random shitty kids you don't relate to. Constantly feeling like you're being judged by your parents. Worrying about grades. Y'know what all these things have in common? They're temporary problems that are exclusive to kids. Adults get to choose their own peer groups, they don't live with their parents, and they don't have grades. So even if you resigned yourself to being totally miserable in your present circumstances and did nothing to try to make things better for yourself (which, of course, is a terrible fucking idea), all you'd have to do is just survive for three years and all these problems would disappear anyway.

Please please please don't even think about implementing such a permanent solution to such temporary problems. It is so so so not worth it.

I don't know what to do anymore. Please help me. I've never been this sad or hopeless before.

It's super late and I need to go to sleep, so sorry I couldn't go into more detail. Honestly knowing this site I kind of half-expect to wake up tomorrow and find that you were just trolling or whatever, but assuming that's not the case, seriously, feel free to send me a PM whenever and I'd be more than happy to talk.
