@Piggler is picking this week's movie. Yaay @Piggler!
At 7/22/14 01:01 AM, Piggler wrote: At that point I had a grin on my face and I was looking forward to the rest of the movie, but it kinda just failed to deliver. There were some mildly funny bits and there was a sufficent plot, but I honestly didn't feel as engaged in the movie in parts 2 and 3.
I dunno man, Dr. Korchek's love letter to Attractive Woman #2 is one my favorite parts of the whole movie.
It's the only thing more embarrassing/awful than regular people using memes.
Criterion Blu-ray editions of Repo Man and The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, and Bryan Lee O'Malley's new book Seconds.

DAMN IT
Well now that someone beat me to that joke I'll just have to say FLCL for the billionth time.
Though seriously, A:TLA is a significantly better anime series than most of the actual anime I've seen (which is admittedly not all that much, but still).

That's what I was gonna post! One of the best movie musicals ever.
The Great Randomizer has spoken (this is the first time in a while I've actually had to use it, so that's nice) and it has selected me to pick this week's film! And we will be watching...
Schizopolis (1996, Steven Soderbergh, USA)
I'm not even going to try to describe the film's plot, so let's just leave it at this: it's an experimental comedy from the guy who had previously helped to spark the indie revolution of the '90s with sex, lies, and videotape and would go on to make the Ocean's Eleven movies (among lots of other things). It's hilarious, absurd, and bizarre, and you'll never see anything else like it. The movie is positively bursting with playful twists of language and scrappy energy, and I hope you guys get as much of a kick out of it as I do!

Angel's Egg was an interesting one. Most of the Christian symbolism sailed straight over my Jewish kepi, so for me the whole thing largely functioned as a really effectively eerie mood piece. Obviously it's quite visually striking, with some outstanding art and animation work. I really liked how the film uses extremely wide shots and minimalist, often almost completely still animation to underline its atmosphere of downcast loneliness. Those kinds of scenes also make the rare moments of fluid action that much more intense and eye-popping. The giant shadow fish and the droves of ghostly-looking fishermen failing to catch it is an incredible, standout scene.
Still, it does kind of drag and repeat itself quite a bit, and I wonder if maybe it wouldn't be better served as a short instead of a feature. Then again that languid pace kind of seems to be the point, so who knows.
Also, between the vast, gloomy and barren world riddled with ancient ruins and restless spirits, the bond forged between the only two inhabitants of that sparse world, the sacrificial porcelain-skinned waif, and the constant sight of capes blowing in the wind, this movie reminded me an awful lot of the games of Fumito Ueda (never a bad thing). I wouldn't be surprised to learn that it was an influence on the visual style of Ico and Shadow of the Colossus.
In other news, I'm still far too verklempt over Boyhood to say anything coherent about it right now, but everything @TheMaster said about it is spot-on. It just absolutely floored me. Easily the best film of the year so far and unlikely to be topped. You guys seriously have to go see it, this is some generation-defining shit we're talking about here.

I don't know about that, but at least we'll always have Tina Belcher and Master P.
It's mostly about drawing circles and getting mad when people call you short.

No, I'm disputing it because it's an asinine and baseless sexist cliche that anyone who actually interacts with real people can easily identify as the utter bullshit it is.
At 7/14/14 04:04 AM, 1916 wrote: Females are certainly more emotional than males
Yeah, totally bro. Now let's all of us level-headed, rational men go do level-headed, rational men things, like screaming and crying at the people playing with a ball on television.

I think one of the most interesting things about them is the psychology of the followers. How people who are weak, lonely or having trouble in their life, can be so easily manipulated into following a totally foreign set of rules and beliefs. Like Aum Shinrikyo, which started off as merely a yoga class, and then escalated to be listed as a terrorist organization by several countries.
You should check out Lawrence Wright's book about Scientology, Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood and the Prison of Belief. I'm in the middle of reading it now and it's fascinating.

I know right?? I'm seeing it on Saturday, followed by a Q&A with Linklater and Coltrane! Though I'll probably still be in too much of a daze / too much of a blubbering mess to even pay attention to what they're saying.
Ugh, this whole thing is so heartbreaking and awful. But at least it's good to know that some steps are being taken to make sure shit like this doesn't happen anymore (like CN actually firing Page, which is actually a pathetically rare outcome in situations like this, or Partridge and other women in the industry speaking out about their experiences, which is pretty goddamn brave, or Partridge and Pen Ward talking about setting up spaces for other women to do the same more safely and easily).
At 7/3/14 05:10 PM, yetanotherjohn wrote: it will be interesting how they'll move on with production (and according to that article, they are continuing production without Page.)
Given the accounts of Page's mental state that have been surfacing in the past couple days I'd imagine they've already pretty much been running the show without him for some time now.
At 7/3/14 06:12 PM, SithCorduroy wrote: Here's the first image from Genndy Tartakovsky's Popeye movie.
Wow, between this, the Fleischer brothers, Robert Altman, and Shigeru Miyamoto, Popeye has worked with quite the diverse and impressive bunch of auteurs over the years hasn't he.
I really hope Tartakovsky starts earning serious bank and clout on these journeyman Hollywood projects he's been doing lately so he can get back to the good stuff (like that long-gestating Samurai Jack movie).

Cool. Cool cool cool. Once you post your thoughts on the movie feel free to also make a pick for next week's film (with the requisite @ mentions and everything) and that'll be our MotW through next Sunday/Monday.
I started at a new job this week, which is why I've pretty much been MIA, so hopefully this will get us back on track.
Aw man, this really sucks. Viksten was a fantastic voice actor, but even more significantly he was one of the most prolific writers on the show. Dude wrote the classic "Stoop Kid," among lots of other things.
R.I.P. Kokoschka, you bum.

Well there was that time they converted a bunch of 7-11s into Kwik-E-Marts to promote the movie.
At 6/26/14 12:16 AM, Vnzi wrote: Arby's is best out of the fast food market.
Gross. Though to this day the worst fast food I've ever had was an Arby's-esque Missouri chain called Lion's Choice, which makes Arby's seem delicious in comparison.
At 6/26/14 01:21 AM, NeonSpider wrote: Five Guys is fast food though.
It's more like mid-level fast food, though (better ingredients, a little more expensive, longer prep time, somewhat nicer restaurants), which is a whole different ballgame from the likes of Burger King, McDonalds, Taco Bell, etc. It's not really fair to compare them.
Good enough burgers but hold off their fries unless you want a bag of grease. Those who have been to Five Guys will know what I'm talking about. Those who haven't may think the "bag of grease" is an exaggeration. It's not.
They also just give you so many fries. The bag is literally overflowing with fries. And that's just a small order! I mean, they're decent fries, but still. Plus the floor is always covered in peanut shells.
If we're talking mid-level chains I vastly prefer Steak 'n Shake.
Nah, she just says shit like that because a bitch got books to sell.
Totally. I hate 'em, they're the worst.
I don't have anything on my walls right now because it's all packed away for when I move into a new apartment, but I've got:
-"The Kramer"
-This 400 Blows poster
-This FLCL poster of Haruko's bass guitar
-The Velvet Underground banana
-Two Zac Gorman comic prints (this one and this one)
-These concert flyer prints for Beck and Modest Mouse
Plus some Beatles, Bob Dylan, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Flight of the Conchords posters that I've had since the beginning of college, but they're in pretty bad shape (and they were pretty cheap to begin with) so I'll probably just throw them out.
So now that we're on our 20th Movie of the Week (!) I thought I'd post some stuff about the movies we've picked so far. Hopefully this information will give you some idea of what sorts of things we've been picking already and how we might be able to branch out even further in the future.

At 6/25/14 03:33 PM, HeavenDuff wrote: Also, how do I get to join the club?
You mean this club? Just watch this week's movie and share some thoughts about it here and you'll be in the pool for picking next week's film. Or just talk about whatever you've seen recently or anything else having to do with movies, whatever, s'all good man.
At 6/23/14 03:18 AM, K1LL80Y wrote: But anyways, those were just the most obvious ones, lookin for more.
To be fair it seemed like you might not already be aware of the obvious ones given that the bands you listed are unilaterally fucking awful.
Anyway, some (marginally) less obvious choices I guess (I don't know/care about the exact distinction between what is and isn't punk, so whatever, these are all punk enough as far as I'm concerned):
Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers
Richard Hell & the Voidoids
Dead Boys
Rocket From the Tombs
Flipper
Television
The Exploding Hearts
Minutemen
Toy Love / Chris Knox
Sleater-Kinney
Buzzcocks
The Modern Lovers
The Marked Men
Patti Smith
Wire
New York Dolls
The Raincoats
Eddie and the Hot Rods
The Dead Milkmen
The Gories
Dillinger Four
The Replacements' early stuff

This guy. This guy knows his stuff.
Since he's the only one who ended up participating, @Natick, go ahead and pick this week's film, our 20th MotW!
Because Natick has already picked a film this "round," this week will be the start of a new one. Anyone who participates this week will be eligible to pick next week's film.
Once Natick posts his pick I'll also be posting some fun facts 'n shit about the 20 movies we've picked so far.
And I will watch Ace In the Hole soon, I swear.
Also I saw Ida today and it was pretty damn good. I was the youngest person in the theater by about 40 years.

Given his most recent album I'd imagine it'll be more low-key, right? Party time Beck should be pretty great in its own right, though.
At 6/20/14 08:28 PM, Spooky wrote: In terms of live shows, I'm going to see Neutral Milk Hotel this summer for the first time.
I saw them some months ago and it was fucking transcendent (well, other than the one asshole who kept screaming "we love you Jeff!" every ten seconds). You're in for a treat.
At 6/22/14 08:49 AM, Sense-Offender wrote: Are we doing MotW this time?
Yes, but probably not until tomorrow night. We kinda skipped a week.
