Well, I've never heard of anyone hating Mp3s either, but Ogg Vorbis is a better compression. If you compare an MP3 and Ogg of the same bit rate, you'll notice that Ogg sounds a lot less compressed.

you have to setup the midi device, which can be done under Edit>Preferences.

At the top of the window switch from General to Control Surfaces and Keyboards on the drop down menu. If you have your keyboard setup and working in FL Studio, then you should be able to simply press Auto-detect Surfaces and be on your way. You might have to restart your computer for it to start working properly.

Maybe in a year or two when/if electronica becomes more popular and the demand rises.

MIDI Keyboards aren't just for electronica.

There are wireless midi keyboards, but you do need to still hook them up to your computer. M-Audio has a series called "MidAir". It's a bit pricey, but it is wireless.

The best thing to do is to find a few artists who you like and think could do a good job, and then contact them. Once you hear back from them and figure out who you think would do the best job, work from there. Be sure to show each artist a portion of your movie (or the entire thing) so they can gauge whether or not your work is of a quality worth their time.

Posts like these typically don't yield very good results because many of the more established artists here don't respond to these posts. If they are good enough, they will have people PMing them requesting music. I rarely take on jobs like these. If an artist personally contacts me, however, I'm much more willing to take a look at what they have done.

Also, since you haven't submitted work before, it's very important that you show screenshots of your movie (or provide a clip), so the musicians here can decide whether or not they want to take on the job.

That's not significant publicity. You need to offer artists something if you want them to sign up. Some sort of promo giveaway, an audio competition with a prize, or something worth joining for. You're not going to get anyone very good to sign up and stay unless they have a reason to.

You may want to spend a little money on advertising or gain some more publicity, or else no one is going to stick around for too long.

Topic: Computer Specs {Powerful Enough?}

If you're running HALion Symponhic Orchestra alongside those other programs 2 GB may start to restrict you, but that all depends on how much you use the Orchestral Samples.

To put it in perspective, When I use EWQLSO Gold (about comparable quality) I can load roughly 16 instruments and use up about 1 gig of RAM. If you used 16 instruments from HALion, that would leave you with 1 gig of RAM left for you system and other plugins. I believe the Macbook Pro can upgrade to up to 4 gig of RAM, which may be something to consider. I'd try and do it yourself though, Apple tends to be pretty anal when it comes to upgrade prices (I believe the cost to go from 2 to 3 gigs in a laptop is around $600)

You should also be aware that Cubase positively benefits from quad core processing, which the Mac Pro has. You would see a noticeable speed jump from the Macbook Pro to the Mac Pro, and you would also be able to run more VSTs with the Mac Pro.

Again, I'd recommend trying to find out how much RAM each plugin will take to get an estimate of the processing power you'll need.

Well, the power of your computer really depends on what you'll be doing.

If you're going to be using high-quality samples (for instance, the Ivory VST, or the Symphonic Choirs VST), you'll want as much RAM as you can get...

...but I think you should be fine with only 2 gig of ram. In reality, unless you use the highest-end samples, you could easily get by with 2 gig. Both machines you mentioned are more than capable of running multiple synths and VSTs at once.

If I were you, I would check the system requirements of the software you use. Adding all of the requirements up can give you an estimate of the kind of machine you'd need.

In terms of value, the Macbook Pro is a very good deal. If mobility is desired, than that will really serve you well. Although the Mac Pro is quite a bit more powerful, I think it offers a lot more than most musicians here would need.

So, from what you've already said, I would advise you to get the Macbook.

It's hard to balance mobility with playability, especially if this is going to be your main keyboard.

For a main midi keyboard, I wouldn't recommend anything less than 61 keys if you're going to be doing a lot of piano work. Otherwise, you will probably be fine with a 49 key controller, but if you go any lower than that you'll start to find yourself limited. With a 25 key controller, I always feel like I about to run out of keys in either direction.

I'd recommend going to your nearest music outlet and trying out a few different sizes to find which one meets your needs (and budget) best.

VST is just a format created by Steinberg, and nothing more. You're question is like asking "are JPEG pictures really that good?". VSTs They come in all shapes and sizes (and price). There are very powerful, very amazing sounding VST instruments out there, and there are some pretty bad sounding ones too.

Typically, VST plugins will come in other formats as well, such as DXi and RTAS.

However, I will happily boast that garritan is the mother of all orchesteral sample packs. 2 gbs of sweetness.

Also it works in notation programs. So yeah.

Garritan is not the mother of orchestral sample packs, it's at the low end in terms of sample quality. Yes, it's certainly a step up from Reason Orkester, but Orkester sets the bar pretty low to begin with.

If you want to hear a quality orchestral library go listen to VSL's Symphonic Cube, or EWQLSO Platinum orchestral libraries. Yes, they are many times more expensive, but that isn't the point. Besides, if price is an issue you'd be much better off spending another $150 and buying EWQL Symphonic Orchestral Gold, which is a huge step up from Garritan. Steinberg's orchestral package is also a better choice than Garritan.

You get what you pay for. Yes, Garritan offers great value for the money (and has pretty humble system requirements), but it's definately at the low end of the dedicated orchestral libraries out there.

But that really is besides the point anyway.

Let me stress again that if you ever plan on having people perform your music you will want notation software. As far as I am aware, FL doesn't offer any standard notation features, and I know that Reason doesn't. Cubase has some notation features, but they don't compare to Sibelius, Finale or Notion.

The question I have for it is are you looking just to replicate a symphony orchestra with your computer? If so, the garritan + FL would be a pretty inexpensive entry-level combination.

Wow.

Sibelius is not low-tech, it just deals with a different method of notation. If you are planning on just writing orchestral/"classical" pieces, then I'd recommend Sibelius, especially if you are planning on ever having something performed. I always use notation software over sequencer software when I know my piece will be performed.

Well, it's an interesting thought, but the quality of sound will probably be mediocre at best. I'm not sure what audio capabilities the sound chip in the DS has, but I doubt it could even compare with a budget field recorder, such at the Zoom H4. Granted, This little DS rig would cost hundreds less, but I'm not sure if it's worth the trouble.

Have you found any sound clips anywhere?

Strange, I'm writing a piece right now that is "Egyptian Industrial" also. I'd definitely put it under industrial. In my opinion, for it to fall under any sort of ethnic or world genre, you'd have to use mainly instruments native to that part of the world.

Project 5 is a very nice program, it's much like Reason. It comes down to a preference thing in the end, but Project 5 is a great program to try out if your in the market for for an alternative to Reason. Although I don't like it as much personally, it does offer VST support, which is a nice added bonus.

Besides, if they don't know your name in real life they won't know it's you here, unless they refer to you in real life as "Paul-Stetich". Don't be paranoid or be afraid to use your own name. I personally think you should use your own name. The fact that you are paying respect to your mother by using her name as an alias is probably not what she would have wanted. To pay her respect, use a name that would have made her most happy, which may very well be your own name.

Posted: 12/26/06 10:43 PM

Forum: Audio

Well, you could record it into your sequencer, and then have your sequencer send the data back to your keyboard during playback. Then you'd have the midi data on the computer, but you'd have your keyboard playing it back.

The only other way I know of is recording the track separately, and then putting it into FL Studio as an audio file.
