I think you'd be helped out a lot by learning about saturation and color theory, as well as studying some general anatomy.
Mix up the poses too, the "standing still and stiff" pose doesn't really tell anything about the characters.

The main problem was the for the most part, about half of the people we're all for going all out on the shmup, while the other half shied away (myself included) when any work was needed to be done.
And then we hit the brick wall with programming and we pretty much stopped
