Eh, I guess. I just never really liked him as a pitcher because when he goes out there you really have no idea what you're going to get.

But I love him as a Yankee fan, and so does Aaron Boone. LOL.

Pretty cool. The animation is simply mind-blowing. With that said, the story seems to lack, at least for me. But I'm not going to say there's anything wrong with that because I've shown the series to my cousins who are young (6 and 4), and they seem intrigued by it, and that's a really good target audience.

Haha, that would be great. Someone should do an elaborate web video with that concept.

At 11/3/07 12:29 PM, Coop83 wrote: Yeah, that would be good, but even if A-Rod fails to get a contract with anyone (unlikely as it may seem), would he come crawling back to the Yankees, saying that he got some really bad advice from Boras.

Well, like I said before, I think the only way the Yankees even say a single word to him is if he comes to them with a check for 31 million dollars to offset what he lost them.

Come to think of it, would Uncle George want him back?

I think that's actually a very good point. That's another way he might still be a Yankee. If George is still even in the state of mind to do it, if he really wants A-Rod back, he can go over Hank and Hals heads, Cashmans head, and sign him himself.

I wouldn't say hypocritical, more like functional and aesthetic. The 90px height chewed up by my site is annoying, as well as unpleasant to look like. And secondly, being hypocritical infers that I am delivering a negative connotation while supporting it, which I am not guilty of.

I'm not saying you're hypocritical, I'm saying the argument, which many seem to believe in here, is fundementaly hypocritical because of the society we live in.

Because our society thrives on capitalistic conquest, that's a given. But at the end, people have a negative perspective on ads because they think they are a waste of time and an annoyance; a negativity I would like to prevent on my website. They already have to deal with sponsor ads on games, let alone banners strewn around them... now that my site actually gets some traffic I want people to come back and enjoy it.

Even with the negative perspective, they don't have nearly as much of an effect on people as you're making them out to have. I bet you have a favorite TV show. I bet during that show is interrupted every episode by about 19 minutes of ads. And I bet on top of that 19 minutes they also show you some ads in the form of product placement within the show. But do you stop watching it? I know my favorite show does just that, but I continue to watch is for I think it's 7 seasons now (24). 24 is actually HUGE on product placement. I would guess that they make close to as much with product placement as they do with conventional commercials.

I was talking to a friend and we came to the consensus that Scott Boras is loosing it.

First of all, he's living in dream land where he's under the belief that some team will pay A-Rod $35 million a year WITHOUT the Yankees bidding. That means the richest team isn't there to drive up the price. HELLO, who's going to drive up the price??? The Mets? LOL.

His second thing, blaming A-Rods post season numbers on MARIANO RIVERA. That's really professional. If Boras didn't have A-Rod on a leash and wasn't walking him all over the place, A-Rod would say you need to shut up because you're making me look bad. But A-Rod seems to be under the impression that he works for Boras instead of the other way around like it really should be (Boras works for A-Rod)

Then his last thing. Saying that A-Rod should be entitled to free agency just like Posada and Rivera and it wasn't fair that the Yankees "threatened" him. It's like hello scott, we're not stupid. We can all think of 31 million reasons why the Yankees made that "threat" to him and not Posada and Rivera.

A-Rod needs to take a little more control of his life and act his age instead of letting Boras run it because now he seems to be slipping a little and making A-Rod look awfully bad.

The entire "no ads on websites" argument is so hypocritical. We see ads from the SECOND we get up to the SECOND we go to sleep. In the movies, on the road, during our work, at stores, while shopping, everywhere. Why should websites be the only exception in our society that don't have ads? They shouldn't be. I forgot the exact number but the average American sees 1,000+ advertisements every day.

RE: Bests Ads for sites

I don't think there's any set answer to that. Different types of ads will perform better on different types of sites. There's an art to it.

A great way to learn more is attend something like ad-tech: http://www.ad-tech.com/ny/ EVERY advertising company will be there. It seems like a great way to talk to different companies to see which would perform the best on your site. I'm going to attend ad-tech NY next week. Anyone else thinking about going?

Good point and I agree, if you only want the id I would do it the way you showed. If you want the actual record contents I would use one single query without max.

Whoops, I messed up.

Now that I look at it, I don't think it would even make sense to use MAX or BETWEEN because you can just do something like this:

SELECT field1, field2 FROM news WHERE id < $currentid ORDER BY id DESC LIMIT 0, 1

I think that would make the most sense.

And sorry if I wasn't clear about that, if you just want the id and not the actual data associated with it, then of course use max because it'll get that id.

Although I would assume you can do something like this to get the data:

SELECT field1, field2 FROM news WHERE id < MAX(id) ORDER BY id DESC

I think that would work, and it would probably be more efficient than both.

You completely missed the point.

You didn't include the second query needed for yours. When you use MAX, you're selecting the max id, not the actual RECORD. In addition to that query, you need to select the actual record, because then again, that's why we query the database.

So yeah, that proved nothing. For my test I selected the actual DATA with both. Obviously it's going to be faster just running a single function, but two queries instead of one is going to be slower most of the time.

I don't think it is. I timed both, and yours came out way more average time. I had it run 3,000 times.

I would say the reason is because using MAX requires two queries instead of one.

uh oh, here comes the flames

A few things. First of all, you need to follow the stories a tad bit closer if you're going to give harsh opinions on them. I thought exactly what you thought when he opted out, that he didn't want to be a Yankee. VERY close friends to A-Rod said he TRULY enjoyed playing with the Yankees and from the people who heard it, they certainly sound convincing and I would believe them.

Secondly, if A-Rod screwed anyone, it's himself. Now he's in a tad bit of trouble. The Tigers have said they wouldn't spend 28-30 million for him. The Giants said it would be a reach. The Angels said they have no desire to pay that much for a single player. It might simply be out of the Mets pay range. Now how is A-Rod going to push up his price with most of those bidders out AND the YANKEES not bidding? He's going to have a hell of a lot of trouble. He could have EASILY had $30 million from the Yankees.

NP.

Also, another way to do it:

$query = 'SELECT field1, field2 ';
$query .= 'FROM `news` ';
$query .= 'WHERE id BETWEEN 0 and ' . ($idz-1) . ' ORDER BY id DESC LIMIT 0, 1';

The bottom line is use which ever method is more efficient. I'm not really sure which is off-hand, but you can do some tests like microtiming or using the "EXPLAIN" keyword before your query to get information.

You probably have to define an alias like:

Anyone who owns a website should be interested because ALL of the top ad companies are going to be there. It's cool because I know I deal with a lot of them (valueclick, casale media, CPXinteractive, all guna be there) so that'll be fun.
