Yeah and the way I decided to do it was just add the gun with ActionScript (addChild()) and then use a point within the character mc to set the x and y of the gun each frame. That's really the only option I could think of that I know would work.

Aahh, I see what you mean. I don't really have time to try it because I've tried a million things and I'm running way behind, but thanks for the suggestions. You can read bellow of how I'm going to have to do it.

It's stupid, I know. There's probably a workaround but I haven't figured it out yet.

Yeah it's so fregin annoying. You have to use like callbacks on the MovieClips to tell them to run the code once they are loaded (like on the first frame of the MC, call a function), but it's extremely annoying to do :\

The first is that if you change any of the 'physical' properties of a MovieClip through actionscript (x, y, rotation etc), it will break it out of any tweens and rely entirely on actionscript to move it. A good way around this is to have your gun MovieClip inside another holder MovieClip. If you have the tween on that holder MC, you can change the rotation of the inner MovieClip without breaking the tween.

Hmm, I used a holder like you said, and the same problem seemed to occur where it stops moving it on the characters timeline. If that actually worked then it would be perfect, but it doesn't seem to...

Hey,

I'm having a really annoying problem with ActionScript 3 and finding MovieClips.

It's a little hard to explain but I'll try my best. I have a MovieClip that is an animated character that spans across about 30 keyframes. Within that MC, there is a gun in its own MovieClip that appears on each frame of the characters clip. That gun needs to rotate to the mouse. I tried giving the gun MC the same name on each frame of the character, but then Flash only draws it once on the first frame instead of redrawing it throughout the character MovieClip.

Does anyone know how I can put this gun in the character but still be able to call it with ActionScript in order to rotate it and manipulate it?

Most epic thing

Just something that came to mind right away: A few years ago, my aunt and uncle purchases a 1.5 million dollar house. At the time, they were living about a half and hour away from the house, and we lived about 15 minutes from it. They drove out one night so we could go in and check it out. In their new bedroom, there was a little remote on a night table, and I picked it up and started playing with it. I said "what is this?" and they're like "you didn't press any buttons right?". It was the remote for the fireplace in their bedroom that wasn't working. They said no one was supposed to try to turn it on. I was incredibly freaked out because I wouldn't want to have any piece in burning their new house that they've yet to move into down. So yeah, I told them what I did, we waited there like 30 minutes to see if any smoke formed, after it didn't we all left, but I don't remember sleeping much that night :)

Oh well of course, the whole speed issue is usually just because of MovieClips being redrawn. Wipping them from memory and clearing references and listeners just has a microscopic effect compared to the actual drawing on the processor.

Nevermind - its a pointless question anyway.

Adding to what you said, how do you find the best way set all references to a movie clip to null wen the movie clip was created dynamically, say for example in a for loop.

I would guess you're storing the reference in an array? At least that's how I do it, which makes it simple because you can just set that item to null, or I THINK you can splice it, but I'm not positive if that clears the reference or you need to set the item to null before you splice it. In AS3, a MovieClip is removed from memory when there are no longer any references to it in the code.

Using removeChild has no effect on anything about the MovieClip except its actual visual on the stage.

This means that when you do removeChild, the MC is still in memory, all listeners are still present. The proper way to get rid of it would be:

1. Remove each of the listeners
2. Remove is from the stage
3. Set the reference in ActionScript to null, like MyMC = null; to get rid of the reference in memory.

Actually, it's a MUCH more realistic solution than suing that won't break the bank because it's free, and you can prove your point at the same time. It costs nothing to get people to file complaints against them, so you can probably get a number of people to do so.

Gah Momo, I wouldn't spend anymore time on them. I know it's probably VERY frustrating, but look at it this way: they are a failed company who clearly doesn't do much business and probably won't even be there that much longer. I doubt you want to pay thousands of dollars in lawyers fees to receive at most $60 in damages (unless you can somehow prove that the downtime is causing your site to lose tremendous amounts of money).

I think the best thing to do is just move on and not renew your service with them. Do you really want to have your data on the servers of a place that you're disputing with and doesn't want you? I know I wouldn't, being that they had access to all of my files and passwords.

I have to say, that score is an outrage. That game deserved MUCH higher. I've always said it in the past, never go by the NG voting system. It's a pretty weak voting system to begin with and in addition it caters more to movies. Anyway, shame on the system.

Rivera was never leaving NY. Just like Soriano was never coming to Philly. The Phillies have a knack for making it look like they're going for free agents, but never really giving a legit offer that brings 'em in. The last big name I remember them signing was Thome back in 2003.

I dunno, I heard something very different on the Rivera front... I was under the impression that the Yankees offered him 39 million for 3 years and he didn't like that offer and was going to shop around elsewhere before making a decision. Not sure which is correct but I'd rather you be correct in this case.

With that said, it's from a players point of view. I think we can do something much more edgy, and from a NUMBER of different point of views. That's the problem I have with most baseball blogs. They are mostly written by one person so you only get one point of view/interest area.

I think it would be cool to get together a lot of people who love baseball, know what they are talking about, and write some interesting stuff with some insight. It would be a casual thing, write whenever you have time, and we obviously would be doing it for fun and not to try to turn a quick profit. I'd really like to see if we could get some eyeballs and readers.

ANYWAY, let's see if some more people here want in, and in the next few days I'll set up a temporary forum where we can brainstorm things like names, blogging platform (wordpress, serendipity, etc.), site features, look of the blog, etc. I know I have one or two friends who would probably be interested in taking part in this also.

An idea for a collaborative project

I know there's a lot of people like me in this thread who really enjoy baseball and writing about it, so I wanted to propose an idea I had for a fun project.

I always wanted to have a place to publish my thoughts on baseball, so I was thinking about making a blog. But I don't think it would be much fun for people to read if it was just me writing. SO, I wanted to know if any of you guys would be interested in doing some kind of collaborative blog where we would all write articles on current MLB news and give our opinions. It doesn't matter if you're a Red Sox fan, Yankee fan, whatever, but you do have to have adequate writing skills. That doesn't mean you need to be an amazing writer, rather you are simply able to effectively convey your point.

Would this interest anyone or am I alone? I have a server so if we wanted to do this I would easily be able to set the site up and buy a domain, but I just wanted to get some thoughts on the idea first.

Maybe Adam Phillips just thought, 'you know what, I love this little idea of mine so im gunna make it'. Dont think in formulas and shit all the time.

Having a story in your Flash movies now-a-days is following a formula? Jesus, I'm not saying follow the movie-writing template, I'm saying have some kind of story that's better developed and people can actually get into.

Whats this quote of Adam's that you based half your post on (got a link)? Maybe it was just a flaking comment not to be taken to seriously anywho.

It's in the description of waterlollies right here on Newgrounds...

One reason im starting to really not like the idea of doing something to do with film when i finish college (studying 'media moving image') is because I really hate all the formulas and cliches. I like to think back to more naive and unknowing ideas rather than having it all worked out already. It's 'too big a thing to grasp' sort of thing.

There's formulas and then there's basic concepts. The basic concept of a movie is it has some sort of plot and storyline.

Wait, then answer this, what is his target audience? People who like movies with weak stories... You can't honestly be serious. Adam even ADMITTED that the story is weak and he's trying to improve it. The animation and drawing are amazing, and if he could just put it in some story form with just a little bit of some story element, it would take it to a different level. It's not action packed, it's not suspenseful, it's not meant to be a comedy, so the way I see it, it is not targeting ANY audience. I have no problem with dull stories. I love movies like that. The problem with this is there is no clear story or plot or any story ELEMENT... You just kind of watch it and go those graphics are amazing, but never say anything about the actual movie as a whole.

But please, don't try to make this about "target audience". "People who like weak stories" is not a legitimate target audience because the truth is those people rarely exist. Luis said he doesn't like Xombie. OK, but that's reasonable because he must not be part of the clear-cut target audience, people who like action-drama's... That's a target audience, and that's what this series seems like it's lacking. I think I saw Adam talking about a full length motion picture or something which would be awesome, but it's not going to happen unless he can go to a studio and show them some kind of story with a valid target audience. It seems like it would target younger kids, but kids can't sit through a movie unless it has some kind of story.

So he's definitely aware of this, and it's great that he's trying to improve it. The bottom line is that it has so much potential, why have a movie with amazing graphics/animation and a story that clearly lacks when you can easily have BOTH elements be very strong?

I agree 100%. The storyline needs improvement. And I don't by the 8 minute excuse. I see plenty of short flashes with good stories.

At 11/5/07 05:35 PM, Paranoia wrote: Meh, it always annoys me when people complain about stuff like storyline. You have it mixed up. A good story line should allow you to make good animation for it. I'm sorry, the story is boring. I know I took a look at it, saw the amazing animation, but felt compelled to x it out half way through because it didn't seem like it was going anywhere. There's absolutely no reason that Adam shouldn't be able to combine a great story with his amazing animation, but right now the story is far from great. Even a flash movie like dad's home, or dad's at work, tells a story that is interesting. It just seems the Brackenwood series has no start point, no middle, and no end. It's like "blah".
