Ok, so I've decided as one of my new projects to create a simple platform style flash game. I've looked through some of the tutorials here at NG and others across the net, but I haven't found many good resources. I'm rather new at actionscripting, but I have been able to create a character that walks and jumps without much trouble. What I am looking to create is a simple "survival" game where the player must defeat wave after wave of increasing enemies. My hope is, if I can build this simple game, the next installment can include more difficult stuff.

Here is what I want in the game:

1. small scrolling level about 3 screens wide (a arena pit)
2. one character who can jump, 3 chain attack, crouch, and throw attack
3. 3 types of similar enemies (easy, med, & hard versions) that randomly spawn in waves
4. 10% of enemies drop life hearts, 10% drop throwing stars
5. 3 life hearts, a throwing star counter, and a point score at the top of the screen

What do I need? Well, some links to good resources to start. Perhaps some suggestions for books that I may look into, and finally perhaps a mentor that could answer some questions and guide me as I learn this scripting thing.

Here is the character that I plan on using. Nothing fancy, but he may look familiar. Thanks!

Ok, here's the cool part! Do you wanna make your own film but are too lazy to make your own characters and backgrounds? Then use mine!

Rather than let them collect dust, I am offering all the assets (characters & backgrounds) to both my popular Maple Story and Slowloft series available for download. All you need to do is:

1. download either .fla file from my website (link below)
2. own macromedia flash 8 (this won't work with anything else)
3. give me some sort of credit somewhere in the film

Whether you want to make a serious sequel to one of my films, include one of the characters in another type of film, or brutally flame my stuff- I don't care. Either way, I'd love to see what you could do with them. So, check them out and be sure to read the more detailed rules on the download page.

Whatever you do, drop me a message when you've posted a completed film so that I can check it out.

For those who are interested, I have just opensourced all my .FLA files for most of my popular films such as "Slowloft" and "The REAL Maple Story." Available for download from my website, you (the teeming public) can now harness all this pre-made flash goodness and create your own sequel/spin-off films for submission to Newgrounds. All I ask is that in some manner you credit me. You dont need to ask permission to use them, but PLEASE email me when you do complete a finished film. I'd love to watch it. Have fun!

My name is Brian S. and I am best known as the animator for Imperial Rage EX, the Skywalkers and Slowloft 1 & 2. I am currently finishing the last bits of my latest animated film, "The Rebels." To do this, I need two voice actors to complete about 3 lines each. The first voice I need is a convincing Darth Vader who will be in conversation with the emperor. The second is an old warrior (like a 70 year old marine sergent with a texas gruff) I DO NOT need bad teenaged "over-modulated" versions of these, but as accurate as can be.

Canidates must have their own audio equipment and be able to email me the final wav or mp3 tracks with little distortion or noise. Credit will be given. The lines are as follows:

Vader:
"Yes my master"
"It must be so"
"Capture the exile" (an order to an officer)

Sergent:
"Not on your life Nerf-herder!"
"She is comming with us... she is coming with ALL of us!"
"Right flank, clear a path for the jedi's escape!"

Topic: "Skywalkers" original art on Ebay!

Posted: 07/24/06 08:18 AM

Forum: General

Did you enjoy the parody film "The Skywalkers" that blended the worlds of Star Wars and the Simpsons? Would you like to help an artist out and own some original art from this well received film?

I am currently cleaning out my studio before I move and have decided to post two packages of original art from the film for auction on Ebay! Each packet of artwork contains 5-6 original sketches used in the film, and at least two cardboard cutout scenes originally used when I first shot the film a few years ago! All will be signed by me to whomever wins the auction!

I ask that those here with angry-souls please look past the "spam" nature of this post and see this as a great opportunity to help support me in my next film, as well as snag some cool artwork for cheap! Thanks!

Oh well, I forgot that most of the flash artists never come into these forums. To answer some comments, no, I am not just lazy, just upset that I have found myself in a lifestyle where I can't find a spare moment to do anything I like to do, like make flash films. I can't imagine what lives people my age with kids are like. On a more legal note, even if I had the time, I would much rather devote it to a project that I could possibly sell and make money from. Not a tightly held copyright. Star Wars is fun, and yes, if anyone were to check out my site they will notice that I have another qsudeo Star Wars film in production- but a full version of Imp Rage is out of the question for me.

Thank you TSX. I'll contact you.

If you've been hanging out on the front page you'll notice the film "Imperial Rage." I made the original trailer years ago as a school project, then reworked it a year back with better graphics. Still, while I've had pangs of guilt time to time to make a full film based on this, full grad school, two part time jobs, a wife and sleeping are keeping me too busy to even think about it now.

However, that doesn't mean it can't happen! I figure, who has more time to finish it than the people telling me to finish it =) I'm not quite sure how this will work just yet, but I would like to assemble a small team of artists willing to finish it. Using the scripts and storyboards I sketched out over the last year, I will work up a quick sketched out animatic for the film before turning it over to them to complete. They can then make any changes to it they want, or abandon it all and do something new. All I ask for is a creator credit in the smallest of print. Sound fair?

Of course, I'm completely serious about this, and I ask that those who reply are as well. Please post here or email me if you are genuinely interested and be sure to include links to films or artwork that you have already done. From them, I'll select a few artists who I think could see the project thru and let them run with it. Not everyone will be selected, but everyone will have a chance to be. Fair?

So? Is this a good or a bad idea?

BTW, here is an image I sketched up from the full story (around 6 minutes)

Now are you refering to noobs at Flash, or just noobs at Newgrounds? I know some great animators who are only just starting out in Flash (mostly from After Effects). Are we lumped into this too?

are you using Flash MX 2004? it wont let me open it, and I'm guessing that's because I have the older MX. Could you try it again saved to the older file type? If not, perhaps you could explain to me what I did wrong. Thanks

If I can get this working, my film will be finished and ready for submisison. If someone could download this fla and tell me what I have done wrong. It is the first scene of my film (the rest follows in additional scenes) and I basically cut and pasted the NewgroundPreloader into it. I made some changes, but I dont think that would have affected anything. Please help, as I am super frustrated. Thanks

thanks! actually, i'm only a few days away from my first submission. watch out for "Hiro Shitaku" (and *cough... vote 5)

As for this, I've always wanted to do something star wars, but I really can't afford to spend too much time on something that is already copywritten by someone else. Thus, I was trying something simple. But, does anyone think it looks too close to Star Dudes?

I threw this test together to find out. I think the hop is a little out of characer, but let me know what you think,

Posted: 09/27/04 01:25 AM

Forum: Flash

I'm putting the finishing touches on my next flash film, but I'm running into problems with the loading screen. If anyone could help by pointing out what I am doing wrong, thank you.

Basically, I have a loading bar, and an animation that cycles every 50 frames. What I would like, is for the animation (guy at desk) to endlessly cycle as the loadbar builds. The problem is, I am using the action script "stop>if load x complete go on, stop>if load x complete go on" (not sure the exact wording). The problem is, the stop command also stops the animation cycle. Is there an easy way to do this?

Thanks
