Topic: Buttons to change music in Flash?

Posted: 08/07/07 11:43 AM

Forum: Flash

this is my round about way of doing this (which I just came up with to try to help, so it may not work):

-make a movieclip called 'music'
-in each frame, put another movieclip, so that each frame contains one of your tracks
-put a stop(); action on the first frame of the 'music' MC
-when the user presses the change track button, the script should be:
stopAllSounds();
_root.music.gotoAndStop(whateverTrack);

that just seems like it would work to me. Try it out. I'm not a scripter, but I like to try to help when I can.

my feeling is that you need to use isToggled for both switching to 2 and 10. I'm not really a scripter, but that seems like a logical solution.

Topic: problem w/ Ctrl+Z in MX 2004

Posted: 08/07/07 11:27 AM

Forum: Flash

I've been constantly having this problem with Flash MX 2004 Pro(and other Macromedia MX 2004 Products):

I can use Ctrl+Z like normal for awhile, but occasionally Z will be switched with Y, and a bunch of other keys get switched as well Ex: _ is now: ?

As you can imagine, this causes problems and frustration, especially when I'm trying to undo something and it just ends up repeating it or doesn't do anything at all. I have a suspicion that my keyboard is somehow entering a European mode, because one of my characters keeps getting switched with the Es tset(ß). However, when I am not in a Macromedia program, this doesn't happen. Also, if I close and restart Flash or Fireworks, it solves the problem(until it happens again).

If someone knows what I'm talking about, please share your wisdom.

Topic: preventing Flash 8 crashes

Posted: 08/07/07 11:14 AM

Forum: Flash

I think it's in the AS:Main, but I read somewhere here on newgrounds that if you use Save and Compact rather than just Save, it helps with slowness and crashing. It basically clears the cache, so you'll loose the ability to use Ctrl+Z, but if you're saving that shouldn't matter anyway.

Although I'm not willing to share any info about what will happen in the actual story, I'll tell you this much:

1) Even though the story of the boy plays a large role in the series, he is NOT a character.
2) This will not be about somebody undergoing any trials or tests.
3) Try to ignore the possibilities of where this story might go and take a look at the back story. Is it interesting? Is it original? Would you play/watch this? Would you rather find out what is happening by watching this or playing this? etc.?

Well, in that case, yes. The story is interesting, and I would watch a movie like this or play a game about this. As for it being original, It's not so much, but that doesn't really matter as long as the final product is good. I mean, there's very little originality in Hollywood(not that they set a good example), so if they can get away with it, you can too as long as you make it your own somehow and make it good. As for what medium you should use to tell the story, I'd go for a movie instead of a game. It just seems like it would be better suited for viewing.

good luck, peace.

Topic: Halo 2 for 12 year old?

Posted: 08/07/07 09:16 AM

Forum: General

yes. my five year old nephew plays halo 2...well, he plays with the controller, but he watches the screen. I honestly don't think there's a problem with kids playing games like Halo. They're going to get desensitized anyway, and it might as well be around some people that can guide them. This is why the rating PG-13 exists, so the parents can guide...and also as a lead-in to rated R movies, and then NC-17, and your kid will become and evil hooligan.

But yeah, i think it should be fine as long as he doesn't begin to think that shooting at grunts is actually okay. We all know how video games teach violence...

I'm having a problem when using an imported .png in my Flash. What happens is my quality .png artwork seems to be getting smeared when I export to .swf. The effect is similar to if you were to draw something nice with pastels, then run your palm all over it. I'll include an example.

As you can see, there isn't much difference, but it's bothering me. If someone knows why it does this, or if I need to optimize the image, or possibly export it as a .gif or .jpg before importing to flash, let me know.

thankyou.

Forum: Flash

Okay, this is actually done(it's a short). I didn't take a picture of me working on it because I used Actionscript to control the character stance, mouths and eyes, so showing the .fla stage just wouldn't do justice to the picture. I did this short to get the moral up in my circle of friends. We've been planning a Flash series for 5 years. Pretty ridiculous, i know. It took me five days to make this final product, assets such as phonyms and character palettes (as named by JackSmack) included. You can use this link to go to my freewebs page where I've posted the final version here. Anyway, I still consider this my current Flash project since now that I've made this short and everyone is on the bandwagon, I will be doing some full episodes. TMI, i know. thanks for reading if you read and watching if you watched.

If you feel any need to verify that I in fact did make this,my freewebs homePage is http://www.freewebs.com/willg1987/

another way to do it, say for a platformer or top-down game, would be to use tiles to create your backgrounds. I'm learning AS myself right now, so I couldn't help you with how to do this, but check out As: Main and see if you can find anything about Tile Based Worlds. Also, you will need a good knowledge of Arrays. Sorry if this was tmi.

Topic: How do you get flash with swf ?

Posted: 08/05/07 09:24 PM

Forum: Flash

First, I would suggest you be more specific when asking questions. It has always served me well. I think I know what you're asking though. "How do I get my Flash from a .fla to a .swf?":

With your .fla open, you can do three things:
-press Ctrl+Enter. This will test your movie, automatically creating a .swf in the same folder your .fla is stored in.

-go to File, Export, Export Movie, then choose your settings and finish

-chances are your publish settings are set to publish as .swf. so, you can just go to File, Publish and the .swf will be created in the same folder as your .fla. If this doesn't work, you will need to go to File, Publish Settings, and make sure .swf is checked.

that's all the info I can think to offer. if it doesn't help, reply with a better description of the problem you're having.

peace.

Forum: Flash

if you have Flash 8 (which I don't :( ) there is some way to blur things...

however, if you have some version like me (MX 2004 Pro), you will need to use the ridiculous round-about way: editing your image in a photo-editor and then importing into flash. I've included an image example I made in Fireworks MX 2004.

As for first flashes, non-finished, I did a lot of crappy stuff like lines moving(Wow!) and bad shape tweens (the ones that tween all weird, with overlapping vectors, eww). I also made a few stick cartoons that were fairly good, or would have been if I finished them. As far as finishing an animation goes, however, this is the first animation I ever finished, here. I made this in five days. I finished recently, about a week ago.

Depending on what you're doing, whether you want to change the alpha for a shape within a movieclip, or the alpha of the whole movieclip from the main timeline, you will find the option here:

For shapes:
-open the 'color mixer' window (Shift+F9)
-select your shape
-in the 'color mixer' window, choose your color and alpha level

For movieclips:
-open the 'properties' panel (should already be open, but: Ctrl+F3)
-select your movieclip
-choose 'alpha' from the 'color' drop-down menu
-choose your preferred alpha level.
-Tip: there are also some other cool effects you can achieve from playing around with the 'color' drop-down menu.

enjoy.

better yet, just put this:

stopAllSounds();

in the Actions Panel for the frame you want the sounds to stop on. i was stupid and didn't read the Help text before posting it. It's way more complicated than need be for this situation. sorry.
