Yep...I was over-thinking it. I guess I assumed AS3 required me to do something ridiculous. Thanks lots Moonkey.

Questioning

Topic: Setting Boundaries For Mouse (as3)

Forum: Flash

I am attempting to create a simple shooter for my Flash class final project. One thing I would like to do is restrict how far the cross hairs can move within frame and how far the gun can move within frame. I have included a picture to illustrate my problem. As you can see, the gun is allowed to go off screen and the cross hairs are allowed below the gun's barrel (which just wouldn't happen). So, I need a way to keep these two things from going past certain points on screen to keep everything looking right.

I have thought of two ways so far to achieve this:
-restrict mouse movement, thus restricting both the cross hair and gun, as they follow it.
-restrict the cross hair and gun separately, using hitTests with some other movieclips.

This project has to be done in AS3, which is kind of a pain, but I wanted to learn it anyway. I have already used AS3: Main to solve a few problems. I am just having trouble figuring out how to achieve this particular outcome.

If anyone can help by giving some suggestions that would be awesome. You don't have to write out a full script. I'll understand you if you say "make a function" or "add a listener for..."

If you need more info, let me know.

Thanks.

I'm pretty sure you can make whatever you want. Whether people like it or not is a different story. As long as you don't steal someone else's work, you should be okay.

Forum: Flash

If you mean how to post a Flash screen shot in the forums:

I usually take a screen shot (Print Screen, found above Insert and directly to the upper right of Backspace on your keyboard).

I then paste the image into an image editor (I use Fireworks, but even paint will work)

I then crop the image so only what I need is showing.

Save the image as a .gif

Post that janks, mah fucka!

During Fight Club, the flashing images are sometimes "cigarette burns," but are more often a single frame showing Brad Pitt leaning on Ed Norton's shoulder or something similar to that. It's a joke, yes, referring to Brad Pitt's character messing with the film reels at his movie theater job, but is also meant to be a subliminal message kind of thing to show how the two characters are related before it is revealed.

At 8/22/07 08:34 PM, altrix22 wrote: what do you mean by that?

What he means is simple. Every day there is someone in the Flash forum asking for an animator that has no details about what they want the animator to animate. You need to come a little mo' specific...

However, you're asking for an animator AND asking that they come up with ideas for you. This is pretty much saying, "Let me submit something you did by yourself." No one is going to do that, man.

Here's what you do: grab a pen, our your keyboard, and write a story out. Maybe it's a short story, or maybe you want a series. Either way, when you come to the Flash forums asking for an animator, you should bring with you as much information as possible. This way, you are more likely to find someone who might be interested in animating your story. It's a true collaboration then: writer and animator.

peace.

Yeah, draw a story board definitely. On the story board you'll want to mark down times in the music, such as: "1:30" for 1 minute, thirty seconds, then draw the pose you want your characters to be in at exactly that time. After doing this, you can fill in a few key frames on paper, or go straight to Flash.

Put your music into the time line and add key frames at your marked times. Then draw the pose for each key frame. Then just fill in between: what those in the biz call "inbetweening."(I think) :).

Then just make sure everything flows well...I've never made a music video, but I have thought about how it might be done before. I have a feeling this is the best way.

That's what she said.

Anyway; Try cutting out some frames and increasing the frame rate. And also, it would be good for everyone to know how big the file is currently, as GreatPatten wrote.

Forum: Flash

Sure: First of all, don't have the outline extend all the way around the arm/leg piece as this will make the joint look retarded. Secondly, it helps if you make the end of a lower limb, where it joins the upper limb, thinner than the rest of it, so that it fits in nicely. This way you can get away with a much broader range of motion without the ends showing. Try to keep joint movement to a minimum if possible. I know that's hard when you're doing some walking animations, but it can be kept simple enough that it looks good and doesn't make the joints look like crap.

This Character Design Tutorial by JackSmack should help you visualize what I'm talking about.

my logic

halo three will be extremely over rated

Well, I have no problem agreeing that the Halo franchise is overrated (as are most popular things), however, you said it's "going to suck." A far cry from overrated, I think. Halo is a great series, which is why it was so popular, which is why it got overrated.

One could argue that Halo was actually not that great of a game to being with, and didn't offer that much new, but rather filled a FPS hole that the gaming world had been suffering. I don't know if that's the case, but I do know that I play Halo (even the first one) over and over because it's a great game, at least for me. I know a lot of people that would agree as well. Now, I'm not going to rush out and pre-order it; that is reserved for StarCraft 2, which I already preordered(blindly so). However, you can't say "Halo 3 is going to suck" just because you think Halo and Halo 2 were overrated.

A logical argument, I think. I'd like to hear a retort if you have one, as long as it's not a flame. The Halo Hatred...saddens me...ugh uh huh ugh uhuhuh ugh...

I'm just noticing that you just posted a News piece in your profile declaring you just got Flash. I also don't see any Flash submissions by you. I don't want to discourage you, but you should start a bit smaller than an RPG. To quote Jobe Makar:

"RPGs are the lure of the sirens."

If you haven't even made a short toon, or at least a Tetris or Pong clone, don't attempt an RPG. You'll only loose steam and spend time wondering why you can't do it. Start small and work your way to the top.

Again, I don't want to discourage you, but I have gone headlong into many projects that were just beyond my skill level and I always end up ten steps back from where I started because of the shame of my failure.

If you voiced it, it should be fine. Knox did a whole Matrix voice over series that went over pretty well from what I know. I didn't watch the whole thing, but as far as "stolen" goes, as long as you didn't rip someone else's Flash, you're good. I can't say whether it will pass judgment or not though. Newgrounds is a Flash portal after all. As I said, though...Knox, etc.

For your first Flash animation, you should use all of the squares (called "key frames"). That doesn't mean use all of them, just don't skip any unless you want to change the pace of the animation.

Yes you should worry about the way it is drawn; people don't like crappy looking Flashes. If it doesn't turn out to be something you yourself would enjoy watching, don't submit it, practice, and try again later.

Frame by frame usually works best for walking animations. Showing the character from the waist up will just make it look like they are bobbing up and down. Also, it kind of makes it obvious you're avoiding making a walking animation :)

Here are some walking cycle tuts for you:

Walk Cycles 2

First of all, you should check out NG Sig Makers and get them to make you a sig. Be nice or they won't help you.

If that doesn't work for you/you'd like to have a sig you made yourself, the most likely reason why your sig is "fuzzy" is because you probably saved it as a .jpg. I would suggest you export as a .gif in the future. Hope it works!
